Saturday highlights from the Giants' farm: Jarrett Parker homered among four hits, and Joan Gregorio and Mason McVay combined to face just two batters over the minimum in 7.0 scoreless IP.
AAA: Fresno defeated Las Vegas 8-6
(rallying for seven runs in the 9th inning)
Fresno: C Andrew Susac: 2 for 4, BB
Fresno: SP Edwin Escobar: 4.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Susac reached base three times as one of four Grizzlies with two hits each. He has three straight multi-hit games to begin the season.
Escobar's PCL debut did not go so well in windy Cashman Field (22 mph winds from left to right at game time), although the game had no big flies. Nearly half his batters (11 of 24) reached base.
AA: Richmond defeated New Britain 13-3
(scoring ten runs over the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings)
Richmond: CF Tyler Graham: 3 for 6, 2B
Richmond: DH Jarrett Parker: 4 for 5, HR
Richmond: 1B Angel Villalona: 1 for 5, HR, SO
Richmond: SP Adalberto Mejia: 5.0+ IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Parker's hot start to the season continues. He has 8 H in 13 AB, including a three-run HR in the 3rd inning today. Graham added three more hits for the Flying Squirrels, and Villalona led off the 5th inning with his 1st HR.
Making his second start in the upper minors, Mejia allowed just 1 R through 5.0 IP but then did not retire any of his three batters in the 6th inning.
A+: San Jose lost to Rancho Cucamonga 1-0
(allowing the game's lone run in the bottom of the 9th inning)
San Jose: LF Chris Lofton: 2 for 3, 3B, SO
Rancho Cucamonga: SS Corey Seager: 2 for 4, 2B
San Jose: SP Joan Gregorio: 4.0+ IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K (video)
San Jose: RP Mason McVay: 3.0 IP, 3 K
Rancho Cucamonga: SP Brian Wilson: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Lofton, the Giants' ninth place batter, was their lone hitter to reach base twice. Seager, one of the Dodgers' top three prospects, doubled and singled after being held hitless in his first two games. He doubled in the 9th inning before scoring the game's only run.
Gregorio struck out one third of his batters (5 of 15) in 4.0 scoreless IP during his Cal League debut. McVay was arguably better than perfect, facing just eight batters in 3.0 perfect IP. Wilson, the ex-Giants closer, pitched a perfect 1st inning in his first rehab appearance.
A-: Augusta defeated Charleston 6-3
(after scoring four runs in the 2nd inning)
Augusta: CF Randy Ortiz: 2 for 4, 3B, SO
Augusta: SS Ryder Jones: 2 for 4, SO, E
Charleston: RF Aaron Judge: 2 for 4, BB, SO
Augusta: SP Keury Mella: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Jones, the Giants' second rounder last year, and Ortiz were two of four GreenJackets with two hits each. Judge, whom the Yankees drafted 32nd overall last year out of Fresno State, reached base three times.
In his full-season debut, Mella came up one out short of a (so-called) quality start. His start included an 8/1 GO/FO line.
