Opening Day is on Monday. There's only one more shopping day. Don't be stuck buying presents at a CVS or something five minutes before first pitch. Here are the players who will be on the Giants' 25-man roster when they face Arizona in the weird half-opener that's at night for some reason:
Catchers
Buster Posey
Hector Sanchez
Infielders
Ehire Adrianza
Joaquin Arias
Brandon Belt
Brandon Crawford
Brandon Hicks
Pablo Sandoval
Outfielders
Gregor Blanco
Michael Morse
Angel Pagan
Hunter Pence
Juan Perez
Starting pitchers
Madison Bumgarner
Matt Cain
Tim Hudson
Tim Lincecum
Ryan Vogelsong
Relievers
Javier Lopez
David Huff
Jean Machi
Yusmeiro Petit
Santiago Casilla
Juan Gutierrez
Sergio Romo
Not going to lie: That's the least inspirational list of relievers I've seen in a long, long time. You're going to watch those guys for most of April, you know.
Also, that sure is a lot of Brandons.
From the Giants' press release, here's what they did to set the roster:
• Purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Juan Gutierrez and infielder Brandon Hicks.
• Reassigned outfielder Tyler Colvin to triple-A Fresno and right-handed pitcher Derek Law to double-A Richmond.
• Left-handed pitcher Jeremy Affeldt (right knee sprain) retroactive to March 23 and infielder Marco Scutaro (lower back strain) retroactive to March 21, have been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
• Outfielder Roger Kieschnick was designated for assignment.
Colvin had an opt-out clause if he didn't make the roster, so I'm not sure if he decided to stick with the Giants or if he still has the chance to become a free agent. He's solid depth, so I hope it's the former.
This probably isn't goodbye to Roger Kieschnick -- teams are stuffing their 40-man rosters full right now, so it's likely he slips through waivers. But even if he goes back to Fresno for a third time, he's probably not forcing his way back on the 25-man roster for a while.
There's the team, there's your 2014. On a scale of gulp to unnhhhh, how confident are you in the 2014 Giants? Yeah, that's about right.
