The Giants defeated the Royals in Game 1 of the 2014 World Series, winning 7-1 in a game that never seemed that close. Madison Bumgarner was excellent, throwing seven solid innings and picking up the win. He did allow his first run in the World Series, though. Maybe something's up with him.
There will be time to worry about that later. Until then, consider this: Madison Bumgarner is the all-time career leader in postseason wins for the Giants. That's New York and San Francisco. He surpassed Christy Mathewson and Tim Lincecum. The obvious caveat is that teams play more postseason series now, and Bumgarner's played in four already this year.
The rebuttal to that is that Bumgarner is 25.
Also, he's fantastic. Send some money to him. I know he's a millionaire, but ... dammit, now's not the time to be stingy. Send some money as a gesture.
Pablo Sandoval rapped a first-inning double to score Gregor Blanco, and Hunter Pence followed with a two-out, two-run homer. James Shields couldn't get out of the fourth inning -- the third straight Game 1 starter unable to qualify for a win against the Giants. The other two were ... let's see ... Cliff Lee and Justin Verlander, if memory serves.
There will be more words -- hundreds! thousands! -- in the full recap later. For now, note that the Giants have won Game 1 of the World Series for the fourth straight time. Don't think about how that streak started, and we'll be just fine.
