Russell Martin? How dare they.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates, perhaps the least likable team in baseball for at least the last 48 hours and certainly for the next 12, set their rosters early on Wednesday. The big story is that Andrew McCutchen is not on the roster.

Aw, dang it.

Here's the 25-man roster for the Pirates in the National League Wild Card Game:

Catchers
Russell Martin
Chris Stewart
Tony Sanchez

Infielders
Ike Davis
Gaby Sanchez
Neil Walker
Jordy Mercer
Brent Morel
Josh Harrison
Clint Barmes

Outfielders
Andrew Lambo
Starling Marte
Andrew McCutchen
Travis Snider
Gregory Polanco
Jose Tabata

Pitchers
Edinson Volquez
Jeff Locke
Vance Worley
Mark Melancon
Tony Watson
Jared Hughes
Justin Wilson
Bobby LaFromboise
John Holdzkom

No Gerrit Cole, no Francisco Liriano, Ghost of Christmas Past. The Pirates will carry three catchers because Russell Martin is still gimpy, though he's expected to start.

Don't trust that Holdzkom guy. He's their Hunter Strickland. Be wary of him when he comes in the game.

This is not a future roster that would have excited you in 2012. This is the opposite of an exciting roster in 2012. Which is to say, no matter how bad things get, roster turnover is always a couple years away. That's why it was so infuriating to watch the Pirates never get over the hump and luck into a solid roster built around a couple of high draft picks.

They've done it now, though. This is a good team. The cynical ones around here can place wagers on the Scott Spiezio of the bunch. The optimistic types can watch this video.
