The Royals' Ventura, perhaps one of the top 50 prospects in the minors, had 6.0 scoreless IP despite allowing nearly two baserunners per inning. Westcott allowed just 1 R through 5.0 IP but departed in the 6th inning after loaded the bases with two outs. Even with just three batters going the distance to a walk or a strikeout, he threw 96 pitches (58 strikes) in less than 6.0 IP. Bowlin had 1.1 perfect IP.

Mejia had his third quality start among eight starts since coming off the DL in late June. Gray, whom the Rockies drafted third overall two months ago and had issued just 3 BB over his first six pro starts, issued a career-high 4 BB but still delivered 4.0 scoreless IP.
