AFL: Scottsdale lost to Glendale 3-2

Scottsdale: DH Tommy La Stella: 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB
Scottsdale: 1B Angel Villalona: 0 for 4, SO
Glendale: CF Jared Mitchell: 1 for 2, BB, HBP, SB

Scottsdale: SP Adalberto Mejia: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K--1 HR, 2 HB
Glendale: SP Andrew Heaney: 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

The Giants' Villalona had his fifth oh-fer in his last seven games, dropping his AVG to .175 (after 57 AB).  The Braves' La Stella provided much of the Scorpion's offense as his 6th double was one of their three hits and as he drew both of their walks.  The White Sox' Mitchell reached base three times, continuing to enjoy a surprisingly strong AFL campaign.  He has hit .323/.442/.581 in 62 AB after hitting just .167/.293/.257 in 300 AB this year.  The 2009 first rounder was the White Sox' top prospect entering 2010 but suffered a bad ankle injury in spring training that caused him to miss that entire year and from which he has struggled to regain his former prospect status.

Making his third AFL start, Mejia allowed an RBI double to his second batter and a solo HR leading off in the 4th inning.  In between, he allowed five other baserunners but none of them to score, getting his ERA below 9.00.  The Marlins' Heaney continues to pitch very well.  After allowing only a walk in 5.0 no-hit IP, his component stats in six AFL starts are now 15 H, 7 BB and 21 K in 24.2 IP.  He seems on track to make his MLB debut next year, perhaps reaching the majors in less than two years after being the ninth overall pick in June 2012.
