Wednesday highlights from the Giants' farm: Ryan Verdugo allowed just 1 ER in 7.0 IP, and Johnny Monell reached base in all five plate appearances.
AAA: Fresno had a scheduled off-day(their first of two off-days in June)
AA: Richmond defeated Portland 9-3
(scoring eight runs in the 7th and 8th innings)
Richmond: C Johnny Monell: 1 for 1, 2 BB, 2 HBP
Richmond: RF Roger Kieschnick: 2 for 4, BB, SB
Richmond: 2B Charlie Culberson: 1 for 4, HR, BB, 3 SO
Portland: C Tim Federowicz: 2 for 4, HR, SO
Richmond: SP Ryan Verdugo: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
Monell reached base in all five of his plate appearances, raising his OBP to .295. Culberson, who had 16 HRs last year, had just his 2nd HR of the year. Kieschnick was one of five Flying Squirrels who had two hits. Federowicz, one of the Red Sox' top 30 prospects, had his 5th HR.
Verdugo followed up on his best and longest start of the season with his second longest start of the season. He threw 100 pitches (64 strikes) while further lowering his ERA to 2.36. It would seem that he continues to improve his prospect status. Reviewing Baseball America's list of the Giants #11 through #30 prospects, my impression is that Verdugo is perhaps one of just three prospects there (along with Heath Hembree and Darren Ford) who have raised their stock.
