minor lines, 6/6/11

Monday highlights from the Giants' farm: Barry Zito and Justin Schumer each allowed just 1 ER in 6.0+ IP.

AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 4-3
(after leading 3-2 through six innings)

Fresno: DH Brad Eldred: 2 for 3, 3B, 2B, BB
Las Vegas: CF Adam Loewen: 2 for 5, 2 HR, 2 SO

Fresno: SP Doug Mathis: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 1 K--1 HR
Las Vegas: SP Mike MacDonald: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Eldred was the lone Grizzly to reach base twice.  He had his 1st triple and 12th double, improving his season line to .290/.362/.597 through 124 AB.  Loewen, the former Orioles pitcher who is now in his third season as a hitter in the Blue Jays farm system, homered twice.  He entered the game hitting .320/.387/.569 through 197 AB.

Mathis uncharacteristically struggled with his control, throwing just 51 of 96 pitches for strikes.  His 7 BB more than doubled his previous season high of 3 BB.  His K/BB ratio slipped below 2.00.  MacDonald, who pitched for the Giants organization last year, had a quality start.

AA: Richmond had a scheduled off-day
(their first of three straight Monday off-days)

A+: San Jose defeated Stockton 7-1
(after scoring five runs in the 5th inning)

San Jose: CF Gary Brown: 1 for 5, 2B, SO
San Jose: 1B Tommy Joseph: 2 for 4, 2B, GiDP
San Jose: LF Wendell Fairley: 2 for 3, SF
San Jose: SS Carter Jurica: 2 for 4, SO, SB

San Jose: SP Barry Zito: 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K--1 HB

The bottom three hitters in the Giants' lineup--Joseph, Fairley, and Jurica--each had two hits.  Fairley has a .266 AVG, while Joseph and Jurica still have AVGs below .250.  Brown had an unremarkable line for the second straight day.

Making his first rehab start, Zito pitched quite effectively, facing just one batter over the minimum in 6.2 IP.  The first two baserunners he allowed were erased on subsequent GiDPs.  The final baserunner he allowed scored after Zito left the game.

A-: Augusta defeated Charleston 2-1
(scoring both runs in the bottom of the 8th inning)

Augusta: 2B Carlos Willoughby: 1 for 3, BB, SB
Augusta: DH Josh Mazzola: 0 for 3, 3 SO
Augusta: CF Chris Lofton: 1 for 2, HBP

Augusta: SP Justin Schumer: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Augusta: RP Seth Rosin: 2.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
Augusta: RP Drew Bowlin: 1.0 IP, 1 K

Willoughby and Lofton each had one of the GreenJackets' four hits (all singles) as they both reached base twice.  Willoughby also had his 24th SB.  With the oh-fer that included the hat trick, Mazzola had his SO/AB ratio rise above 25%.

Schumer's seventh start of the year was arguably his most effective as 6.0 IP matched his season high and 1 R was a new season low.  Over his last five appearance, Rosin has not allowed a run in 9.1 IP.  Bowlin bounced back from his previous appearance (4 ER in 0.2 IP) withis his 3rd save.

DSL: Giants at Cubs2 suspended in 4th inning

Dominican: 2B Alberto Robles: 1 for 1, 2B, BB
Dominican: SP Carlos Diaz: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Robles (20.9 y.o.) reached base in both of his plate appearances.  Making his second pro start, Diaz (17.6 y.o.) allowed the first run, albeit an unearned run, of his pro career.
