Around the Newspapers

Taking a quick jaunt around the Bay Area papers:

  • Felipe Alou watched Matt Cain pitch, and promptly compared him to Tom Seaver and Mark Prior. See, when I do it, I'm kidding. No pressure, Matt. Just be careful about becoming an abject failure. Those are the worst kinds.
  • J.T. Snow took out Brett Tomko with a line drive during practice. The article reads:
Like most pitchers here, Tomko was throwing without a protective screen between him and the plate. Most pitchers dislike the screens
Were I Brian Sabean, the conversation would start like, say, Brett? Would you pitch with the screen if we bought you dinner? No? How about if we say, "pretty please", and ask you nicely? No? How about if we gave you 2.5 million dollars? Great, because we are doing that. Let us know if you need help with the screen.

To be fair, the screen might mess with mechanics, and that can't happen in the spring. Still, it would be a horrible way to lose a pitcher to injury.
  • There is a piece on Tony Torcato in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. I had assumed earlier in the offseason Torcato was a lock to make the team, as he is out of options. It turns out that Jason Ellison has the inside track on the last roster spot as a defensive replacement. Who do you go with? I think the Ellison idea is just too obvious, and outweighs whatever advantage is provided by Torcato's left-handed bat.
