Scott Ostler is stealing terrible ideas from MCC

Either that or he's the one who keeps posting terrible ideas as fanposts and then ignoring us when we make fun of him.

Open Stupid Trade Thread

We've all seen the 10,000 threads proposing we stupidly trade Matt Cain, but I'd like to open it up - we have a LOT of players who can be involved in stupid trades, not just Cain. I have a few terrible ideas myself:

- Randy Winn for the rights to negotiate with Lou Pinella

The Rays did this just a few years ago, and now they have a shot at winning the World Series. YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH RESULTS!

- Matt Cain for CECIL Fielder

Screw Prince. Cecil has more veteran savvy.

- Tim Lincecum for Armando Rios

Okay, so the Lincecum for Alex Rios trade didn't work out. We're all bummed about that, but it's time to move on. I have no doubt we could pull off a trade for Armando Rios - if we can figure out just where the hell he is nowadays.

- Pablo Sandoval for Corey Patterson

The Giants HAVE to acquire a mediocre veteran center fielder every year. I think it's in the union contract or something. This is a perfect way to make it happen. The one downside: why trade for Patterson when Endy Chavez is available on the free agent market?

Tim Lincecum leads ESPN's Cy Young Predictor

I'm not sure how their formula works, but following last night's start, Lincecum leads Webb 162.8-154.0. Sabathia doesn't even show up, though.

Pat Misch > Travis Denker?

Schierholtz, Bowker, Misch, and Espinelli have been recalled. Still no Denker. Did he piss in Sabean's cereal or what?

No deadline deals

Baggary says the Giants won't be making any deals before tonight's trade deadline. Not exactly shocking news, of course.

On a more positive note, he points out that Webb's shelling tonight gives a boost to Lincecum's Cy Young hopes. Webb's ERA is all the way up to 3.19 after tonight. If there's any justice, Lincecum has to be the winner - he's now leading the league in winning percentage, ERA, and strike outs. The only other starters who are even close to him in ERA are Santana and Peavy - and both are more than 50 strike outs behind him.

Be it a Unabomber-style shack or your mom's basement

Show us from whence you write your hateful screeds, Buster Posey-related limericks, and butt-pee anecdotes.

I'll start with my desk - a place where I spend far too much time, seeing as how I work from home AND waste all sorts of my barely-existent free time talking to you lot:

How did you become a fan?

There's not really much of a story for me. My dad was from a small town in Montana and moved to the North Bay when he was ten or so - this was in the days of Willie Mays and before the A's left Kansas City, so of course he became a Giants fan. Before that, he had rooted for (shudder) the Yankees. He raised me right, so I became a Giants fan, too.

But I'm curious as to how other folks became fans - especially those of you who aren't from Northern California, don't live here, etc.

Classic Game #4: 1987

I just watched some of tonight's CSN Bay Area Giants classic game - #4 on the countdown. August 10, 1987, against the Astros. It's over now, but I had a few thoughts to share:

- I really wish they'd show these games in their entirety, or at least edit them better. This one ended with a walk-off homer from Will Clark - it cut very abruptly from him arguing a strike call to him swinging for the home run. Didn't even show the pitch being thrown.

- MAN did Candlestick have a lot of foul ground. I knew this, but it really looks massive after being used to Phone Company Park all these years.

- I liked Chili Davis, even after he left the Giants, but I never realized until I looked up his stats just how good he was. .360 career OBP, 350 home runs, only had an OPS+ under 100 once in a full season in almost two decades - I'd kill for a player like that now.

- I had completely forgotten Don Robinson was ever a reliever - but he was for all of 1987 and most of 1988. I guess I mainly remember him from 1989.

- The announcers were Joe Morgan and a very young (well, relatively speaking) Duane Kuiper. It was interesting hearing Kuiper so early in his career - his voice has changed a lot, and I barely recognized him at first. Also, in the 9th, on a Candy Maldonado home run, he shouted, "Get out of here!" I can't imagine Kuiper being quite so straight-up a homer nowadays. I mean, listening to him, you can tell he's a Giants fan, but he's not so explicit as the nation's crumbier announcers.

- I'm still terribly fond of Mike Aldrete. He's probably my favorite mediocre Giant of all time. Mark Carreon's right up there, too.

- Uniforms were a lot uglier in the 80s.

The best baseball name of all time

There have been many great baseball names through the years, from Hall of Famers (Early Winn, Three Finger Brown) to career minor leaguers (Stubby Clapp, Alejandro Freire) to former Giants (F.P. Santangelo, William Van Landingham, Tsuyoshi Shinjo) to players from the recent past (Rusty Staubb, Herm Winningham) to current players (Jarrod Saltalamacchia)

But who takes the title as having the single greatest name in the history of the game? For me, the choice is clear:

Rance Mulliniks.

And you?

Giants: 100+ innings without a home run

Following today's loss to the Padres, the Giants have gone 102 innings without hitting a single home run. The last one came off Bengie Molina's bat on July 22nd.

As a Giants fan, this seems sort of impressive in a perverse sense. But I have no idea how rare it is to go so long without a home run, and my Google-fu is failing me. So I'm turning to you guys: how long has it been since a team has gone over 100 innings without any home runs? What's the longest any team has gone in recent years?
