My screen name is the truncated name of an outdoor public swimming pool in Vancouver. Seriously, don't ask. My real name is Jeremy.

Haved loved the Giants through thick and thin (increasingly thinner) since the mid-1990s.

Euro 2008 Final Open Gameday Thread

Spain vs. Germany for all the marbles. One of the most incredible soccer tournaments in recent memory comes to a (hopefully) thrilling conclusion. Michael Ballack is playing today, but David Villa is not. Spain looks for its first title in 44 years.

Have at it, McCoven! The Giants-A's game doesn't begin for another 90 minutes anyway.

Wow, this pregame show with the giant balloon cones is weird. Sure ain't Tom Petty at the Super Bowl, is it?

LINEUPS!

Germany: Lehmann, Friedrich, Mertesacker, Metzelder, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Frings, Ballack, Hitzlsperger, Podolski, Klose.
Spain: Casillas, Ramos, Puyol, Marchena, Capdevila, Senna, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Silva, Torres.

Totally 90s! Cito Gaston is Back

Not a huge surprise....John Gibbons finally outstayed his welcome in Toronto. The surprise? Cito Gaston is back.

I've always wondered why a guy with back-to-back World Series on his resume never got another chance to manage after his first go-round with the Blue Jays ended. I guess we're about to find out.

Also, that's three managers fired in five days. When was the last time that happened? Kind of like MUNI buses, there are none for ages and then three come along at once. Hey, just trying to fill the 75-word quota.

Alternate comment starter: Stone Temple Pilots reunite, Cito Gaston returns to baseball. Coincidence?

OT: Champions League Final Gameday Thread

What a Wednesday morning/afternoon. I have "work" that they're actually paying me to do, but there's also Giants-Rox at noon and, for those of us futbol fans, Manchester United vs. Chelsea in Moscow for the Champions League Final.

I was able to MacGyver my way into ESPN360 and so I'll be watching bits and pieces of the match, work meetings notwithstanding. PacBell Boozer, Salemicus and everyone else: have at it if you're so inclined.

LINEUPS!

Manchester United: Van der Sar, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Hargreaves, Scholes, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez. Subs: Kuszczak, Anderson, Giggs, Nani, O'Shea, Fletcher, Silvestre.
Chelsea: Cech, Essien, Terry, Carvalho, A Cole, Makelele, Ballack, Lampard, Malouda, J Cole, Drogba. Subs: Cudicini, Shevchenko, Mikel, Kalou, Alex, Belletti, Anelka.

Countdown to Opening Day (h/t Lookout Landing)

Yeah, the Giants have it kinda bad right now -- but dare I say it, the Mariners have it worse. LOL Richie Sexson brawl. Cheers to our blogging bretheren over at Lookout Landing for keeping their eyes on the prize.

Get to know Brian Wilson

Weird off-day interview between an ESPN talking head and the intense but succinct Brian Wilson. (See video box in right hand corner of page to view it.) I'm curious to know more about the minor league teammates he had who cooked and ate a bird that was hit and killed by a pitch.

UK Logo (Bo)cock-up

This has nothing to do with the Giants, except it's an easy way to continue the McCoven tradition of cheap laffs related to anatomy.

Wednesday Night at the Big Phone

I was at the game last night. Holy hell, that was as much fun as I've had at the old ballyard in ages.

Quick notes:

  • There were maybe 20,000 people there, but that means you could walk around and sit/stand anywhere that was open. None of the ushers really bothered us.
  • Crowd was great. Not to have that snobby indie rock part of me coming out, but the one true benefit of the post-Bonds era is that the posers are pretty much gone, especially on weekday night games. It actually has a Candlestick feel to it in the bleachers, which may not always be a good thing for parents bringing their kids (a little rowdy, a little excessive drinking, and lots of "Dirty Sanchez!" chants).
  • We walked right by That Guy from Tuesday's game, the Asian dude with the Giants hat full of pins who spent the entire time clapping and yelling. He was definitely getting the love from the fans and staff who recognized him. Gamer.
  • Fred Lewis' catch-and-throw was AMAZING to witness in person. The crowd was totally jacked after that.
  • Is it too early to talk about Tyler Walker being the team MVP? Not to jinx the guy, but did anyone predict he'd be this solid?
  • The way the team came on the field after Ort's walk-off hit (LOL Jim Edmonds) was like they had just won a playoff series. Really cool to see these guys so excited for each other. Not sure if it was shown on TV, but Kevin Frandsen hobbled onto the field when the game was over, dropped his crutches and gave Ort a big bear hug. Awesome.
  • I screamed myself hoarse.
  • I agree with Fairweather Fan from last night's thread: "Even if we lose 100 games, if they all go like this, I'll take it. This is a team I can watch." Good times, good times.
