Open Gameday Thread, March 1

Sabean: Things aren't going as fast as we're expecting.

Colletti: Under the radar. Patience. That's how we have to do this.

Sabean: You didn't trade a single prospect this winter. Not a one. I understand the art of subtlety, but cripes, man. If your plan is to sabotage a farm system, you're going about it an interesting fashion.

Colletti: If it makes you happy, I'll execute Plan Indigo.

Sabean: Oh! Uh, yes, by all means!

Colletti: You don't have to trade a farm system away to ruin the value of young players.

Dodgers appear interested in Tigers' Inge.

I'd also like the Giants to get their grubby little paws on Andy LaRoche.

Please, God, let us get Andy LaRoche. Please. I'll stop thinking evil thoughts about the Dodgers, anything.

laroche..
..would be a nice addition, but word is his defense is on the average side.  Since offense remains somewhat overvalued compared to defense, I wouldn't expect him to available for a fair price.

Of course, if the Dodgers were going to go all Mariners about it trade him for peanuts, I'd be on that trade like white on rice.

I have no faith in team management to make moves that are actually beneficial for the team. I have less faith in Dodger team management to make moves that are actually beneficial for their team. I hope this all balances out and we get a 3B that's worth something like Andy LaRoche.

If you're going to dream, you might as well dream BIG.

How about this blockbuster: I have a vision of the Giants only losing 90 this year, instead of the expected 125.

Hhmm I thought this was a far less likely dream to occur then  a less then 90 loss season.  Of coarse the proverbial snow ball in hell has better odds then both.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, March 1
I found this on Brett Harper, a complete report on the guy. It's on Scout.com (boo) and is insider content. I didn't want to paste the entire article because I don't want Grant getting in trouble. I don't give an airborne fornication about infringing Scout's copyrights because they're all jerkoffs, but no getting Grant in trouble.

Basically the report says he has power when he's healthy (like now, coming off surgery to repair a torn labrum in 2006), is big and slow, and the guy who wrote the report estimated Harper would arrive in MLB in 2009. Isn't great defensively at first. The report was written in December so it's fairly recent.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, March 1
I'm all for grabbing Laroche (especially taking him away from the Dodgers), but can we tone down the "I'd give my left nut for him" comments?  I mean, he's not Jay Bruce for God's sake.  He seems like a kid with good numbers in AAA ball but he didn't exactly mash it up in his short time in the majors last year.  Yeah, yeah, small sample size, whatever, but that's kinda my point.  He probably has potential but let's not get carried away here.  Remember our old buddy Todd Linden?  I didn't hear many "I'd give my ___ for him" comments around and sure enough he's barely on the map anymore.  I'm not being a downer on Laroche.  If we can get him, cool.  Let's just not act as though he can single handedly help the Giants get over .500.  Only Lincecum can do that.  :)

Andy LaRoche..
Hasn't had a 900 OPS in AAA yet.  He's had 2 half seasons with 900 OPS in AAA.  No one would give their left nut for Todd Linden.  He didn't have a 900 OPS until his 3rd season in AAA.  That was after even another half season in AAA.

Not saying that Linden and LaRoche are identical, but they put up somewhat similar numbers in minor ball.  Was the closest (and most recent)comparison that I could dig out of my brain at the moment.  Still, the kid isn't the second coming.

Age
Specifically age to level.

Linden's 1st year in the pros was at age 22. At age 22, Linden had an OPS of 888 at AA in the Texas league, relative to a league average of 716.

At 22, 2003, in AAA, 755 OPS in 120 PA, in the PCL, relative to a league average of 761.

At 23, 2003, in AAA, 747 OPS in 511 PA, in the PCL, relative to a league average of 747.

At 24, in AAA, 810 OPS in 552 PA, in the PCL, relative to a league average of 799.

At 25, his breakout year, in AAA, 1119 OPS in 415 PAs, relative to a league average of 792.

At 26, 834 OPS in 221 PA in AAA, relative to a league average of 757.

At 27, in only 57 PAs in AAA, 1016 OPS.

At age 22, Laroche had an OPS of 905 at AA in the Southern league, relative to a league average of 690.

At AAA in the PCL, also aged 22, Laroche had an OPS 950, relative to a league average of 757.

At age 23, AAA in the PCL, Laroche had an OPS of 988, league average of 783.

It took Linden until age 25, to do what Laroche did in AAA, at ages 22-23.

They are NOT somewhat "similar".

Re: Age
Let that be a lesson to all McCovenites trying to write a post.  If you try to make a comparison and you haven't done your homework to within a 99.99% accuracy range regarding stats, don't even THINK of saying anything that may be considered a "broad" statement.  Just ain't happenin'.

On the contrary, all I ever do is make broad, generalized statements. The days I take our BBR or BBC to drop some stat learning are rare indeed. The trick is just saying things that can't be argued with.

Dude
I was not trying to be insulting or anything. If I came off that way, I apologise.

I could have just said age to level and left it at that, and left people to go look up both their stats. I just chose to justify my point.

And really, this is hardly a case of 99% accuracy. The gap between the 2 in terms of age is large.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, March 1
It'd be pretty friggin sweet if we could yank Laroche away from the Dodgers like that, but I doubt it could happen, especially since Joe Torre really likes him and would try to convince Coletti not to do it and also because the Dodgers probably wouldn't like to trade him to us specifically.  And what could we possibly use as bait?  Their rotation's pretty well stacked as it is, and their bullpen is pretty decent, too.  They don't really need anymore pitching, which is pretty much all we have to offer.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, March 1
I don't believe the Dodgers want Inge. We heard about them wanting a dozen third baseman this offseason including Pedro Feliz and they didn't get any of them, or vigorously chase any of them. They already have Nomar and LaRoche. And if they did trade for Inge and decided to trade LaRoche, the Giants would be the last team they would trade him to. We are going with the status quo at third base and that's our own Joe Crede.

Have a person sitting on a toilet, looking like he's happy and cheering and have it say:

But there were a couple problems.

  1. I couldn't find a picture like that.
  2. The Giants don't have runs.  Well at least the kind I was talking about.  They just have the other kind I was talking about.

SF Giants 3b
I would like to go on the record seconding Bruce Bochy that SF should give Eugenio Velez a shot at 3b. Bochy has stated that Velez has the arm strength to handle 3b. If Velez cannot handle MLB pitching Sabean then could attempt to swing a deal for another 3b.

Re: SF Giants 3b
How is trying out Velez at 3b blocking any SF prospect? With Frandsen set to play 2b and the OF crowded (with more prospects in the wings), Velez will need to find another position. He had been a SS and played some 3b years ago. Rather than go outside the organization to upgrade at 3b the Giants should try out all available in house prospects first. SF was already looking at Aurilia, Leone and McClain why not also include Velez?

Re: SF Giants 3b
I'm still playing the odds on Durham being handed 2B by our "words are good to lie with" GM and our Vet Fetish manager, that's how.

I'm actually happy with Eugenio getting a shot. I just don't like splitting Frandsen's ABs any more than they already are going to be. And I think if Bochy starts getting Velez-happy, Frandsen's bound to suffer.

Then again, the DL could solve all my "crappy veteran" woes....

What we learned today
  1. There's no such thing as a 108.00 ERA, right?
  2. It's never too late, like banks caught in a subprime lending vortex, to just take a $115 million charge (Zito's remaining contract) against expected income.
  3. The above figure is the remainder of the brilliant Zito contract orchestrated by Brian Sabean, who was far past his prime a year ago when he wrote the thing.
  4. Bleeah.

If Tony Soprano owned the Giants, Zito's last start would have been yesterday. It has been proven impossible to pitch when the pitcher's whereabouts are unknown. And since there is no one to cash the checks, there will only be paper losses. Good for the cash flow.

Also, Threets and Wilson looked awesome, and Bowker hit everything in sight.
