FanFest Q&A with Matt & Tim

So I was at Giants FanFest today, and it was a beautiful day, hanging out in the warm sunshine, walking on the warning track with the field covered in a mound of mud (was there a Monster Truck rally scheduled?), seeing lots of the Giants signing autographs, etc.

The absolute highlight, though, was a nearly one-hour Q&A with Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum in the club level hosted by Damon Bruce. At the risk of sounding like the super-nerdy fanboy that I am, what a blast seeing my two favorite Gigantes pitchers on the same stage together. They both seemed really cool, Matty has a wickedly dry sense of humor, and Tim the Enchanter truly looks about 12 years old. (He was wearing flip flops and basically looked to be 5'9", 150 lbs. at most.) Also, I'm not a big Damon Bruce fan, but full credit to him for mentioning, to loud applause, that "the best off-season move this team made was not trading Tim Lincecum."

Most of the hour was turned over to the audience for their questions:

  • Someone asked if they had played other sports in school besides baseball -- Tim mentioned playing football, to lots of laughs, and Matt interjected, "I know what position you played: 'Hide'".

  • Asked who was the toughest hitter they've faced, Tim answered Todd Helton and Matt answered "The entire Yankees lineup."

  • Favorite ballparks to pitch in besides The Big Phone -- Matt said Fenway, Tim said Wrigley.

  • Asked what their training schedule was on days between starts, Tim said (sheepishly) that the team basically tried to feed him as much as possible to fill out his frame. Matt said, obviously, he stays away from eating a lot.

  • My girlfriend (pictured, back to the camera, next to D. Bruce) asked what their favorite baseball movie was. I can't for the life of me remember what they answered. Matt might have said "Sandlot."

  • Both play video games -- Guitar Hero and Rock Band got a shout out from Matt, who said he doesn't play video baseball because "I don't want to fool myself into thinking I'm any good."

  • Someone wanted to know how they heard they had been drafted by the Giants. Tim said he was golfing that day and got a call while on the 9th hole. Matt told a funny story of being with his mom, who was following the draft by dial-up computer, and she wrote down every name as they were announced. "She was halfway done writing 'Matt Cain' until she realized it was her son's name," he said.

  • When they were done, they hung around for at extra 10 minutes signing autographs as their team handler desperately tried to get them to the next session. I loved these guys before today, now I can't wait for their first regular season starts.

Sure, I'll post the photos I have. The day was an exercise in guerilla photography, plus I'm not much of a photographer to begin with. But they're some okay shots.

He looks like a guy that I work with...

I wish that I could go to Fanfest, but darn the fact that I'm away at school. Last year's Fanfest was on the exact day I flew back. Next year I am so there... we should have a meetup or something.

I can't wait for May to come around - then I won't be teased for being a Giants fan anymore. I swear these Virginians don't know what they're talking about.

Re: FanFest Q&A with Matt & Tim
Question for all in attendance:  Was the Q&A limited to a select few (e.g season ticket holders, first 100 people), or was it open to the general public?  Cause from these pics, it looks pretty small.  I remember when I went to FanFest a few years ago, it was PACKED to the brim and I would imagine the Q&A with Matt/Timmy would also be jammed.  Apparently 21,000 people attended.  Definitely not big enough to accomodate all.  I would have lined up way early to get in there and get an auto. Much fanboy love, admittedly.

As far as I could tell...
Q&A was open to everyone. The way FanFest is set up at the ballpark now is they have autograph areas outside, in the front row of seats along both the first and third base lines (and the lines to get player autographs was HUGE). Then there was a KNBR live broadcast at home plate (show hosts interviewing Rowand, Winn, Aurilia, Sabes, etc.). Then upstairs at the Club Level there was a Q&A in the 231 section (Ray Woodson interviewing two team doctors, sparsely attended), and Matt & Tim were in the 207 area. They didn't really announce which Giants would be appearing in Q&As at specific times, so we kind of just stumbled upon it.

Re: FanFest Q&A with Matt & Tim
The Giants' website said that it was estimated to be the same attendance as last year, and my friends and I noted that the Club Level wasn't wall-to-wall people like it was last year. Still well-attended, but it seemed like the crowd was down a little this time around.

I'm past the age where I'd have the patience to wait in long lines, so I don't do the autograph thing anymore. If I happen to see someone walking by (this year it was Randy Winn who will benefit from the Smack karma), I'll shake hands and offer some good words. And all of the players seemed to genuinely have a good time, rather than the going-through-the-motions vibe you sometimes see.

Does Cain have a lazy eye, or is it just the photo?

by m34josh on Feb 10, 2008 3:10 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

    Matt & Tim
You know I find that in a lot of my photos one eye doesn't seem to be looking right on, and I definitely don't have a lazy eye or an alignment problem. I think it's just some kind of trick of the angle, most likely. It's weird, though. You'd think that both of 'em should be right on.

is it like one eye is just more shut than the other?

Because I have that problem for pictures.  That's what they told me anyways when they turned me down at the modeling agency.

Nah, it's that one eye looks like it's looking straight at the camera, and the other eye looks like it's just slightly to the left or right, looking at something else, like the picture taker's ear or something.

I would think it would be pretty unnerving to step in against a cross-eyed pitcher who throws 95 MPH.

Krukow was discussing Ort, and said "he had holes in his swing, and he fixed em"
If Mike is not just blowing smoke rings at us, that is nice to hear.  A switch hitter has 2 swings to develop, it would not be surprising if Ort keeps improving in his late 20s

without knowing who they were beforehand, i'd think they were just two college kids who attended FanFest and someone mistakenly thought they were pros and asked for an autograph.  The two most non-major leaguer looking major leaguers ever, and i love them both.
