Oh, right. Optimism Week. Uh, young player who I'm looking forward to watching....Brian Wilson. That there guy throws some nice pitches and stuff.

With that out of the way, allow me to indulge myself. One of my biggest jobs here is to stimulate discussion. My knock-knock jokes really don't build a sense of community. Good discussion starters certainly do, however. That written, I'm going to knowingly kill any chance of discussion today, as I'm going to push for a trade that I've pushed for in the past. It's a boring trade, and the upgrade, if any, would be minor.

A conversation like this happened at some point this winter, I'm pretty sure:

Bochy: So, what happens if Vizquel gets injured? He's 40, you know.

Sabean puts a huge handful of peanuts in his mouth.

Sabean: Amafmff a grrffffrandsenfffefa.

Bochy: Wait, what? Did you just say Frandsen?

Sabean: Afffmmgffvelezefff

Bochy: Wait, Velez? That guy can barely play second!

Sabean: How did you hear both of those names? Dammit. I need more peanuts.

A backup plan to Vizquel never existed. And now that Vizquel is out with knee surgery, it's kind of a joke that the Giants don't have a single ML-ready shortstop behind him. Frandsen is not a shortstop. Rich Aurilia is no longer a shortstop. Velez is even less of a shortstop. Ivan Ochoa is a career .246/.330/.307 hitter in the minor leagues, so any improvements made on Frandsen's or Aurilia's defense would be negated by Ochoa's offense.

The correct answer is Ben Zobrist.

Zobrist is a pre-arbitration shortstop who is blocked by a shortstop at the major league level, Jason Bartlett. Zobrist is not in the future plans of the Devil Rays, who have Reid Brignac as their long-term solution.

Ben Zobrist has never had an on-base percentage below .400 at any minor league level.

Ben Zobrist has a decent defensive reputation.

Ben Zobrist does charity work for causes you care about. Look it up.

Ben Zobrist fills a need for the Giants. His team doesn't have a plan for him in the short- or long-term. That team could use some inexpensive bullpen help. They could use a ML-ready starting pitcher to avoid rushing their 1,783 starting pitching prospects.

Ben Zobrist might not be a long-term solution, but the Giants would have a couple of years to figure that out before he's pressed by any of the shortstops in the low minors.

There has to be a fit.

Ben Zobrist is a switch-hitter.

Ben Zobrist can take out all of the raisins out of already-baked oatmeal-raisin cookies if you don't like raisins. If you prefer, he can put in more raisins.

Well, I can agree that any deal for Zobrist would be an upgrade. Although, any trade for Andy Marte for 3B would be an upgrade too, but that is a different subject. I hope for a Zobrist for Threets and Valdez trade, although i admit that the deal would look more like Zobrist and keeping Rick Aurilia out of the lineup for Threets and Valdez, which would mean we would have to include another player...interesting thought though

Zobrist?  pffft.....  how many all-star games has he played in?

When you're plan is to start a 40-year-old shortstop who's losing his range & has lost most of his bat speed, do you really need a back-up plan?

OK seriously.  Zobrist sounds like a good option & he would fit into the second part of the speed & defense plan outlined on page 3 of the TPS report (unlike Frandsen, Richie & Velez).  But realistically, our GM isn't going to make this move.  And I don't think we should trade anything of quality for Zobrist when he'll only be filling in for a couple of weeks.  Odds are we're going to trade for Crede, move Frandsen to short & once Omar's healthy he'll take over for Durham who'll be hitting around the Mendoza line.  Leaving 12 million dollars on the bench with Richie & Ray-Ray.

Optimism week:  Brian Wilson kissed the Blarney Stone & got a new tattoo this offseason.  Sorry if this was already posted  We could use that extra luck this year.

So relax! Let's have some fun out here! This game's fun, OK? Fun goddamnit.

Injury could linger throughout the season
Got a 40 yr old playing a demanding position and coming off surgery, SF needs to fortify the SS position. Possibly the reason SF has decided to go with Frandsen and not one of their minor league SS is because of 40-man roster ramifications.

Ben Zobrist is not the answer. Ben Zobrist is the question. The answer is "sure, why not?"

The larger issue, of course, is the team's careful preparation to maintain a continuting supply of shortstop competence: Joe Jester, Edwin Maldonado, Elliot Strankman, Jamie Athas, Mickey Miranda, Kevin Kelly, Tim Hutting, Jeff Palumbo, Jeremiah Luster, Anthony Contreras, and Mark Minicozzi. All the while employing Mike Benjamin, Steve Scarsone, Kim Batiste, Jay Canizaro, Wilson Delgado, Jose Vizcaino, Rey Sanchez, Ramon Martinez, Cody Ransom, Neifi Perez, Deivi Cruz, Angel Chavez, and Tomas De La Rosa.

So no, I don't see any problem. None at all.

Well, our veterans are starting off with a bang (not that I am complaining)...
The Giants will be down four regulars in their exhibition opener Thursday against the Chicago Cubs. SS Omar Vizquel (left knee surgery), 2B Ray Durham (sore right shoulder), C Bengie Molina (strained left quadriceps) and 3B Rich Aurilia (sore right hamstring) all were scheduled to be held out. Bochy joked that he might get in trouble from the league for not having enough starters in the game. "I could get it the first game," he said. "We have four guys down. I could get that letter

So tomorrow's starting infield is going to be Ort, Velez, Franny, & Leone??? That is my best guess.

So, yeah i think we could use a young, healthy guy like Zobrist.

We have an over-abundance of bullpen arms - some of which are interesting, if not really very good.  We should be offering Threets, Taschner and Misch to anyone needing a lefty in the pen and Messinger, Chulk, Sadler and Valdez to anyone wanting to take a flyer on another arm out of the bullpen.

Any way you slice it, we're going to lose some of those guys, unless we do something really, really stupid like send better pitchers (i.e. Sanchez, Wilson, etc.) down to the minors just because they have options left.

If I were Sabes, to maximize my returns, I'd trade two or three of the above names to people for short-season league pitchers with plus fastballs.  Or Ben Zobrist.

I adopt Hector Sanchez. Because he's 17 and it delays the inevitable disappointment that much longer.

All I know is I looked at the DRays team and wonder how they could lose 96 games and then I realized the league and division they play in.  I wonder how many losses the Giants teams of the last three years would have lost in the AL East.

The Rays went 29-43 (.403) against the AL East and 37-53 (.411) against the rest of MLB last year. Using that as a benchmark, I'd guess the 2007 Giants would have lost 92 games if they'd been in that division...one whole game more than they actually did lose.

If Vizquel is out for a decent amount of time (which he likely will be what with being 40+ years old and all) all I want from whatever we get to fill that void is good defense. Seriously, I would take a .220 average and the guy routinely berating my mother in post-game comments if whoever he is can just turn a nifty double play and make enough stops to keep Cain and Lincecum from committing rituatlistic suicide by the All-Star Break.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)--Neifi Perez's homecoming with the Colorado Rockies isn't going to happen.

Perez and the Rockies had agreed to a $750,000 minor league contract on Tuesday, a goodwill gesture that manager Clint Hurdle called a lifeline for one of the more popular players in club history who has hit hard times of late.

But the team later had second thoughts and decided against bringing him back.

"We just didn't feel like it was a good fit," assistant general manager Bill Geivett said.

The first player suspended by baseball for stimulants since they were banned before the 2006 season, Perez has 18 games remaining on an 80-game suspension he received last season after testing positive for a third time.

The Rockies hope Perez can find a job with another team.

And they really, really hope that other team is the Giants. Neifi wouldn't immediately help with Vizquel out, but I wouldn't trust Sabean to figure that out.

At least it's baseball season.

Zobrist makes too much sense. Too young, and too much potential for the Giants.
Similarly, a starting infield with 3 players under 30 (Zobrist, Frandsen, Ortmeier) would look waaayy too much like a "rebuilding effort."

I was visiting my uncle in Raleigh last summer and got to see Zobrist play for da Bulls against Rochester. Zobrist was DHing and went 3-5 with 3 RBIs that night with Matt Garza starting for the Red Wings. I guess this doesn't add much other than Zobrist looked great then.  Make the move Sabes!

I think the problem with hoping for a trade like this is this:

The Giants will trade WAY too much for Zobrist, he'll come over, do a fine job filling in for Omar for the first 2 weeks of the season, then Omar will return and he'll get stuck on the bench, wasting away, not getting enough regular playing time to really develop. And then he'll be ruined.

The Giants will ruin you, Ben Zobrist.

Ruin you.

And I'm going to stray off topic, but I wanted to say, since no one else wants to, but I actually like Pat Misch. I saw him pitch only twice last season, but there was something there. I swear it. I swear I saw that something.

If we include Misch in some BS trade, mark my words, we'll regret it.

I wouldn't give up much for Zobrist at all. Certainly no major league ready, young starting pitcher. Maybe a guy like Messenger or Taschner or some reliver who doesn't fit into the plans.

He's done ok in the minors. But at the Trop, where most young hitters have come up and prospered, he's put up an average of .200 and an OPS od .503 in 200 ab's. I'd rather just give Burris or Bocock a shot.

I think it's Bocock, at this juncture. My understanding is that Burriss, while good defensively, hasn't made the necessary offensive progress for someone his age. Schoop still has potential, good-not-great defense, but still needs lots of work on his offense.

Clearly Bocock will have to hit better, but by all accounts his defense is ready right now. Culberson could very well be the wild card here, but as he is a 19-yr-old, I'd assume Bocock gets his shot before Culberson does. After this season, Culberson could very well jump to the top of this list.

So I had my series of love poems to Ben Zobrist all planned out and was getting set to commit them to paper in my own blood when I was learned that Grant failed to mention that when Ben went to the bigs from the minors he becomes half the man he used to be, and his wife is a plastic Jesus freak.  She's not a freak about Plastic Jesus (as in, "it don't matter if it rains or freezes..."), but she is plastic and a freak about Jesus.  So, now I will cancel my purchase of the URL www.zobrist-giantssavior.com, and just say Zobrist for Misch straight-up would make me happy.

Go Fred Lewis... You're better than the alternative... Yippee...

I really wonder what male Giants fans find attractive if they think there's something wrong with the very lovely Ms. Julianna Zobrist.

And don't trade Misch! Trade Hennessey or some other reliever(s). Let's keep Misch.

Interesting hypothesis
 I like Misch and think he has very god odds of at least being a solid lefty out of the pen. At this point I would trade him a half a hart beat for a player with what I've read about Zobrist. A young, agile, keystone player that is under team control for years and knows a what a strike zone is.

   Worst thing that comes case scenario's are (A) Misch goes on to be a solid carrier #3 type starter and Zobrist falls apart and can't post a 300 OBP while morphing into Cody Ranson. Or (B) is a serviceable SS the recently drafted SS have to be better then to take the job. Option  A  is mitigated by what are the chances Misch would have the opportunity as a starter here ( Its possible but by no means definite) and on farther review option B isn't that bad.

I think it's just that the picture linked to above is airbrushed to holy hell and she kind of doesn't look like she's made of flesh anymore. She as a physical person is obviously not unattractive, but the photo's been touched up so much it doesn't look like we're looking at a person anymore.

And Christians who feel compelled to tell everybody how great being Christian is are creepy. I don't go around telling you all about my non-Jewery, do I? No, because nobody cares.

Well, I guess I forgot to mention that I have a thing for androids. I'm waiting for Hiroshi Ishiguro to fix the kinks, and then I will be in hog heaven.

And I agree, nobody enjoys a zealous, singing Christain. Nobody. Those who say they do are faking it because they're afraid of going to hell. But that doesn't negate the fact that she looks like a hot android.

BLADERUNNER is definitely in my all-time top 5 favorite movies.

And I guess we can trade Misch. I think he's going to be a very solid #3 for some team, but the Giants are loaded with talented pitchers, so, we might as well trade him.

As somebody that has watched almost every game of Zobrist's career, I can tell you that he will be a solid major leaguer. never an all-star. he was held back last year because of some injuries (nothing serious) and never got regular playing time.

his one drawback is that defensively, he is average at best. I would call him dependable, but his range is very limited. he won't make a lot of errors, but he won't make any great plays either.

Offensively, his major league numbers have yet to show his minor league potential, but part of that is a lack of regular playing time. He has never looked over-matched and I think he will be fine. I can see him hitting .280 with a .380 OBP most years. and one or two years he may get hot and hit .320/.410.

the reason he is out of a job in Tampa Bay is bc the Rays were attrociious defensively last year, and made one of their priorities this off-season. So they went and traded for Bartlett who was just as important to the Rays as Garza in the Delmon Young trade.

in the end, the Giants could do much worse than Zobrist.
