Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery

Breaking news from the Chron.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/02/26/sports/s120824S63.DTL&type=sports

San Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee.

The 11-time Gold Glove winner is expected to miss four-to-five weeks. Vizquel tested his knee on the field again Tuesday but said the pain was too much to handle. Vizquel will have the operation to repair his torn cartilage on Wednesday in the Bay Area.

Manager Bruce Bochy plans to use Kevin Frandsen at shortstop while the 40-year-old Vizquel is sidelined.

So, who plays short now?

I like Omar, but anything that reduces the chance of his vesting option for 09 is probably a very good thing.

Does this mean he misses the next four to five weeks (pretty  much all of spring training) or the first four to five weeks of the season?

The article says he should miss the first week of the season, at the most. Doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe that, plus 3 or 4 minor league games before he joins the team?

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
Sounds like Frandsen. According to Boch, anyway.

Which means Ortmeier gets every AB at first, Durham is every day at second, Aurilia is every day at third, and Velez is utility. And then, I guess, no more infielders.

Or it would be that way if the season started sooner than 4-5 weeks from now.

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
If no more infielders, we're probably looking at a chance to have all of our 3 young outfielders make the opening day roster.  Omar will probably be on the fence as to whether he'll be able to start or not on opening day.  Either that or we'll drag an Ochoa/Leone up for a week or so.

I disagree. Say what you want about getting the young guys playing time, shortstop is the toughest position on the field, and it's not where you want to just slot somebody in. Watching Frandsen try to pull it off at the big league level in the past made me cringe. I wish Franny well, but he's no SS.

Question: if he's out for 5 weeks, he's healthy on April 1st. Since he'll have missed Spring Training, he'll have to go on some kind of longer-than-normal rehab program. So are we talking third week of April? Fourth? May? What is the best historical comparison out there?

Calling all shortstops!
Why do people think this will increase the chances of SF trading for Crede? This seems to magnify the fact that the Giants do not really have a suitable replacement at SS this season. With the renewed emphasis on pitching and defense I would be greatly surprised if SF opened the season with Frandsen as the starting SS because he cannot handle the position. Scour the waiver wire and minor deals for a defensive minded replacement. Turn some of the out of option players into trade bait.

here's a vote for Ochoa to hold the space for Omar.  Looked adequate in AAA.  Hit several solid base hits the one Fresno game I saw last year.  Probly gets the job in 09 anyway as it's too soon for Burris/Bocock/Schoop/ etc., so a bigleague preview is a good thing.

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
I don't think this affects the Crede deal, because Crede is coming here anyway. As for Sabean, didn't the last few years teach him anything?? Why did he sign Omar in the first place?? At least this probably lets us out of the second year, although I wouldn't put it past Sabean to sign him again at a lower price.
Randy Messenger's biggest fan, although I will drop him like a hot potato when we get Joe Crede

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
This has got to be a MLB record of some sort. Heck it's not even March yet. They haven't played a game. Do they keep Stats on the earliest a Starting Player has been injured requiring surgery?

I've got a pretty big name here
How about when Bonds missed almost all of 2005 when his crackpot surgeon kept re-infecting him with that unwashed steak knife he used in three knee surgeries, beginning in, like January?

That crackpot surgeon would prefer things if you referred to it as a "performance-enhancing" knife.

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
Something about the way things are going tells me the team is aiming to record one win this season for each year they've been in San Francisco.
2002? I'm over it. But I'll never be over Rich Aurilia.

It's all been building up to this marketing ploy! Oh, Sabes...you sly little ferrett.

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
Can we justify the rise of Velez by saying it will keep either Ray Durham or Rich Aurilia out of the starting lineup everyday? I think that should be a + to velez' case to start at 2B or short. If it helps the marketing, the moment velez gets to 50 SB, we can bench him

Re: Omar Out 4-5 Weeks With Knee Surgery
While I agree that Frandsen is no shortstop, I think Bochy might play him there during ST just to ensure he and Durham both get the maximum number of ABs.  After all, this competition at 2B is going to be about hitting; the team knows what it has as far as their defense goes.

It would give Frandsen the chance to prove his bat is ready to start and give Durham the chance to prove that 2007 was a fluke.

Hoping tk's recovery is faster than Raj going from first to third!
