Like sleeping for twelve hours....

Link dump!

  • Pedro Feliz is still butt-hurt about the way he left the Giants. Is "butt-hurt" pushing the envelope for this site? Apologies, but that's what Feliz is. You try and find a more apt description. The dude's butt-hurt and kinda whiny. But he puts it into perspective by wistfully mentioning that he's been with the organization for 14 years. Yikes. I didn't realize that. I'd be a little butt-hurt too. Perspective is a good thing.

The article mentions that the only difference between the Phillies' contract and the Giants' contract was a team option. The buyout for the option was $500,000. I can't believe that all that was standing between the Giants and Feliz sittin' in a 2009 tree was $500,000. Bullets: We dodges them.

  • Brian Wilson went to India to participate in some $1,000,000 baseball-throwing contest. Can't we just have one offseason without a potential closer going to India to participate in a $1,000,000 contest? Sheesh. Last year, of course, was Armando Benitez in a tandoori chicken-eating contest. Or did I just dream that? Anyways, the contest in which Wilson is participating has a pretty neat step-by-step description of how to throw a baseball.
  • A New Hampshire paper speculates that the two independent-league signings of the offseason - Olmo Rosario and Steve Palazzolo - might report to AA this year. This is just an excuse to post a link to the Steve Palazzolo article from Baseball Think Factory again. I just love reading that thing. Palazzolo for closer!
  • From an interview with some awesome crazy beard guy on the same record label as three of my favorites (Of Montreal, 31 Knots, and Aloha):
Q: If you played, what song would you want to play as you stepped to the plate?

A: I caught for Jack Taschner (now of the SF Giants) in high school and we had this conversation once as he was getting ready to pitch in the college world series with UW-Oshkosh and he said he was gonna go with "The Final Countdown" by Europe. I always thought that was a pretty badass choice.
Wait! I take the Palazzolo-for-closer comment back! Taschner for closer! Ninth inning...one run lead...do do do doo...do da doo doo do... do da doo do...do da do da doo da do.... All y'all "Enter Sandman"-types can put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Now, I know the comment was about music playing when Taschner comes to the plate and not about his entry music as a closer, so if Taschner doesn't want to use "The Final Countdown" as his entry music as a closer, he should probably get some at-bats at first base this season.

Re: Like sleeping for twelve hours....
I was reading Pedro whining earlier. I was kind of surprised. I also liked the articles that were like "Why would they give up on him when their offense was so bad? Yes he had a .288 OBP..." Well, there you go, man.

Also, Of Montreal is awesome.

Wow, 14 years.

Although, I bet for Pedro it seems even longer...like maybe 16.

Re: like 16...
In defense of Pedro, he lit up the PCL in 2000.  He probably earned what a normal franchise with a promising young position-player would call a "starting spot".  Not Sabean's veteran Giants though.  Sabean stunted Pedro's growth as a hitter by limiting  his ABs when he first came up.

Of course...who knows how old Pedro was.

Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.

Re: like 16...
On the other hand, a large part of Pedro's lighting up the PCL had to do with the l'il Giants two year stint playing in Beiden Field while waiting for their new stadium. Beiden (Fresno State's old field) was pretty small and had a strong steady wind blowing out to left at all times. Cody Ransom hit 23 HRs there the next year. Pedro still only had about .037 IsoOB and a K/BB of 94/30 in that season.

And I'm pretty sure they brought him to the major league club because he was out of options, not because they thought he was ready for it.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Final Countdown will always play now when I see Taschner take the field.  That is not necessarily a bad thing.

My advice for Brian Wilson:

A: Always
B: Be
C: Closing.

Always be closing. ALWAYS BE CLOSING.

Also, AIDA

A: Attention: We're going to finish under .500 for many years unless we fire Sabean. Do I have your attention now?

I: Interest: Are you interested in playing meaningful October baseball, Mr. Magowan?

D: Decision: Make a decision to save your franchise:

A: Action: Hire someone with some grasp of how farm systems are built, talent is evaluated, budgets are met, and championsip teams are built.

Re: put that coffee down...
Hmmm, that's a very interesting thought, about getting someone who knows how to build a farm system.

Many here would say that Billy Beane knows how to build such a system and yet it has been pretty much acknowledged this off-season that he doesn't, and that's why he had to trade off his two best players in order to rebuild it.

On Sfgiants.com it said that Brian Wilson saw a kid that threw 92, and since cricket and baseball are pretty similar, we may find some players there. That country is pretty obsessed with cricket, a lot of talent waiting to be picked.

Yes, the whole Indian subcontinent: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, is obsessed with cricket.

But, top professional cricket players, playing for their countries and a club in England earn very good livings.

Closer music
Papelbon's is the best. Surprisingly, it isn't something from Riverdance. It's Drowning Pool's "Let the bodies hit the floor" which is by far, the greatest closer music of all time...that has actually been used in that way.

Personally, I'd love to see the next great closer that the Giants play Hit the Lights.

Bonds stands alone.

Re: Closer music
There's a German metal band called Gravedigger and they have a song called "Giants." Since Wilson worked in a graveyard as a teenager, I think that song "Giants" would be an excellent choice for him. It's metal. It has the team name. What more do you need?

Rosario and Palazzolo
They both played in the Can-Am indy league last summer so Connecticut would be in familiar territory.  I definitely think Rosario goes there, since I can't see any openings for him in Augusta or San Jose.  I'm hoping Palazzolo goes to San Jose so I can see him pitch in some Cal League games.  Now that would be awesome!

try the intro to 'Non-Alignment Pact'
You know, Pere Ubu's classic, ominous, evil-sounding squeals before the song (great as it is), even gets going.  I mean, something so weirdly portentious, the Enter Sandman geeks will probably spend the first at-bat trying to claw out their eardrums.

Man, that would rock.

Wow so... Pedro has really never batted over .250 in any full season.  102OPS+ his best.... and the Phillies claim they have the best infield in baseball.  Howard + Utley + Rollins.  I only count 3.

I'm not sure I disagree with the Phillies...Feliz is there to drive in a few runs, hit a few jacks and solidify the infield defense. I don't think his OPS+ is what the Phils were looking at when they signed him.

He's the perfect addition to that team, since he will probably be hitting in the 6/7/8 spot.

Grant,
Just wanted to say that was an awesome link to the baseball think factory; I spent a good 2 hours reading how good our 2007 draft was (with so many top 2 round draft picks, you'd hope so), watching the side by side clips of pitchers and reading about mechanics. In late september he will have the pennant clinching run on third, bases loaded, one out, a 2-0 count, and promptly hit a double play grounder to short on a slider two feet off the plate.  Why the fuck did he ever see a fastball?  Watching him hit was like watching Felix Rodriguez pitch.  Or watching your best friend post another bio on E-Harmony.com.
