alt.reality.sf-giants

BallHype is running a "what-if" series, asking bloggers what single event they'd change in their team's history. Because thinking too much hurts my brain, I chose one of the more obvious examples. And because writing too much also hurts my brain, this counts as my post for the day.

But it does come with a nifty comment starter! Free! And it's painfully obvious!

Comment starter: If you could change one event in franchise history, what would it be? Bonus points if you can do one without mentioning Felix Rodriguez, Bobby Richardson, or Jose Cruz, Jr., though those memories are always good for a chuckle.

I love your chain reaction of events.

My more pedestian single moment would be Cruz Jr. catching that damn fly ball.

Also, maybe Prop P passes because the voters are not in a post earthquake panic, thereby providing a new ballpark sooner and with less debt.  For that matter, maybe if Prop W passes in 1987 there would have been even less financial strain caused by private financing?

Plus, being from SF proper, I'd like not to have that debt hanging over the city's head because the local ballteam wouldn't pay for their own stadium.

AT&T/PBP/SBC/ETC is a gem. Living in London now (but over for X-mas) I miss the place. I walked past the stadium the other day and it's just the most wonderful place to be.

Well, just off the top of my head...
Sabes signs Vlad. This causes right field to be so awesome for so long that we don't need a 1b hitter last year, and manage to keep Accardo.

Because of this, Hindenburg goes to the Dodgers.

After a brilliant set-up job by Accardo, Blowmeatz comes into a game and strikes out Hindenburg during some important Giants Dodgers game that takes place due in some way to signing Vlad.

The whole team/city is so blown away by this that they throw Armondo a victory feast entitled "He Did His Job".  Unfortunately, after his 10th cheeseburger, he suffers a massive heart attack.

But, because I don't wish death on him just for being some ass*ole who can't pitch and talks sh*t, he recovers, retires to the Caribbean, and founds some baseball school from which the Giants gain multiple Villalona's for years to come.

How's that for alternate?

"The San Francisco Giants have just announced that Vladimir Guerrero has signed a 6-year deal with the team.  With incentives, the deal is worth approximately $90 million."

Hell, let's just round it out to $100M.

If the Giants sign Vlad, they have the best 1-2 punch in baseball and avoid the litany of over-the-hill veteran free agent signings.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
Just a few thoughts on this one...
  1. resigning Jeff Kent instead of sending him off to clean monster trucks....errrrrrr popping wheelies on motorcycles, leaving us with a perennial hamstring problem.
  2. AJ was never born and somebody had the forethought to try Nathan at the closer spot.
  3. The Lesbians that got kicked out of Chaves Latrine came back with a car bomb a month later. (of course there are a lot of Dodger Fans that would like this to happen)
  4. Sabian kicks one too many tires, loses a toe, retires, and Ned Colletti takes over.
  5. They lowered the cost of Beer at the stadium at the beginning of last year... I know that doesn't have anything to do with the club per say, but it sure would have made it more bearable making the roadie up there to watch that abortion of a season.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
Really?  And here I never realized the signings of Pierre, Nomar, and Schmidt were good.  Something like 30 million a year was thrown at them combined.  Not to mention, now that they've signed Andruw, they might play Pierre in left over Kemp or Ethier.  Yikes.

Sabean is no good, but neither is Colletti.  The Dodgers success can be traced to two things, the farm system and DePodesta's work as GM.  Neither of these things can Colletti take credit for, and in fact, he has done everything in his power to waste the resources of his farm system.

Agreed.  Everything that happened since then wouldn't have had nearly the impact if we'd won the World Series.  Skip Vlad?  No biggie, we already won the Series!  The AJ debacle?  Who care, we celebrated a World Championship in 2002!  Your 2007 San Francisco Giants?  We still won the Series in '02, right?  I'm good with our championship.

Granted, I'd like for us to have remained a contender after that, but the blow is softened at the very least.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
Buffy, that was precisely what I thought of as well. The 1987 team should have been in the World Series, and I think they'd have beaten Minnesota at least once in the dome (that was the Series where the home team won every game, giving Minn the WS win). Our team was very good that year.

A further benefit of that might have been a 12-year-old Joe Nathan watching on TV and saying to himself "If I ever get to the majors, I'll never play in that place - it sucks." That kind of resolve might have helped. Maybe.

My second choice would be the Braves NOT trading for Fred McGriff in 1993. Then our 103 wins would have won the Western Division and gotten us into the NL championship series, instead of only getting us second place. I still dislike the Padres for that salary dump.

The SF Giants: we're not much, but you should check out our team in Augusta!

because I'm so young this is more than obvious...... the a.j persyskni (something like that) trade.......imagine our rotation 1.Cain 2. Zito 3. Lincecum 4. Liriano 5. Lowry i put it in that order due to the balance of right and lefthanded pitchers we would also have arguably the leagues best closer in Joe Nathan and possibly a great setup man in Boof Bonser. I'll say this if we never made that trade we'd be competiitvie this season

I was young at the time so I am not sure of the circumstances surrounding it, but it sure seemed we did not make much of an effort to resign Will Clark in '93. Instead choosing to focus on Robby Thompson.

I don't know if resigning will would have morphed reality into any Giants' World Series, but I know another few years of the Thrill would have made me a happy fan.

Top of the 6th inning, Rockies batting
October 3rd, 1993, Fulton County Stadium, Atlanta.

Liriano (the other one) doubles
Eric Young singles.
Andres Galarraga hits a sharp grounder to Terry Pendleton at 3B, who, dreaming of polishing his MVP trophy, boots the grounder into foul territory.  2 runs score, Galarraga on 2nd.
* Charlie Hayes * singles to right, and Galaragga scores.

Rockies win 6-5.  Giants beat Atlanta in 1-game playoff, then crush the Phillies and the Blue Jays.

* Bolded * players are richly rewarded when they become Giants, well past their primes.  I am pretty sure Sabean is actually from THIS universe.

The Giants go to the NLCS with to hot starters having carrier years in Swift & Burkett, back end of the pen  Beck, Jackson & Rodgers and a batting line up that could tattoo the ball.  0 -13. OK, I guess I should have stated that I'm specifically referring to when they bust out the video camera and actually show the proposal taking place for all to see.  Simple messages on the scoreboard are more discreet, and as such, not nearly as impersonal.

But to force the girl to make that choice with everyone watching, that just doesn't sit right with me.  Plus I wish she'd say "no" once or twice to break up the monotony if nothing else.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
A couple things.
  1. Orlando Cepada gets traded earlier in his career for a really good starter, and not Ray Sadecki.
  2. Gaylord Perry isn't traded for Sam McDowell and his whiskey bottle.
The 1960s and to an extent the early 70s Giants were one good starter away from the World Series (i.e. a Drysdale to go with Koufax's Marichal) and they never really got it, and made some dumb trades trying to get it.

3) Horace Stoneham doesn't trade away a ton of good outfielders because they're not Willie Mays.

And this might be controversial but..

4) Horace Stoneham (and Walter O'Malley) turn down overtures from the West Coast and stay in New York.

I argue this because I think the move of the New York franchises (and the others as well, but obviously the Giants and Dodgers were the seismic shocks) greatly hurt baseball. A lot of very powerful people lost their favorite team, and I think this may have had a negative effect on the health of the game.

But..fear not, because..

5) The PCL franchises are integrated into the Majors.

Go Seals!

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
If only Dusty had left Russ in the game in Game 6 to get a couple outs before bringing Felix and Nen in to close it out. Then we win the game and the Series in '02, Nen doesnt ruin his shoulder and can keep pitching, and maybe we win again in '03.

If we win back-to-back championships like that, the AJ trade is not made and we've got Nathan to close out games to succeed Nen. We'd probably end up trading Boof anyway, Liriano would still have gotten hurt, and we'd be too good to have the draft picks to select Cain and Lincecum, but at least we'd have WON A WORLD SERIES

I think most Niner fans are split on the issue, but I never see a whole lot of people sitting in the middle.

Me, personally, I just don't like the guy, I didn't think he ever had the locker room (especially at the end), and I didn't think it was fun to watch him play... and I was damn spoiled from watching Montana and Young all my life on top of it. But the most basic reasons were I didn't like him and he wasn't fun for me to watch.

I understand your sentiment, even if I don't feel the same way.  It astounded me that the media turned on him like they did.  One year, Garcia's sittin' pretty, having put together two or three successful years, then suddenly, everyone is saying he stinks and shouldn't even be an NFL QB.  I didn't get it.  Then he stunk, but I blame the new system that was in place, which seemed ripe for failure for him.  Especially considering he's been a winner again in Philly and Grampa Bay.  So go figure.  Basically this all goes to show how I don't know crap about sports, even if I enjoy the hell out of them.

I'd change the moment where Jeff Novitzky (or whatever that asshats name is) found evidence in the trash at balco to get the investigation going full swing.  If not for all that then Barry does not turn into the scapegoat of the steroid era.  The steroid era never really happens.  And the Giants don't cut ties with him.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
Many of ones I would chose are above so I won't list them other than to note the Gaylord Perry one.  To that, I would add George Foster and say that one way to prevent both is to remove whoever was GM then (was it Stoneham?).  Heck, it would probably encompass trading Bobby Bonds, another trade I hated.

Anyway, while the others above are good choices and probably more significant to the franchise than what I'm going to offer up, I just like the thought of it:  Hank Aaron decides to take the Giants offer instead of the Milwaukee Braves and joins the Giants.  With him in RF, Mays in CF, McCovey in LF, Cepeda at 1B, that would have been quite a lineup.

My other thought, just popped up, comes in second, is this:  Giants sign Barry Bonds when they drafted him instead of letting him go to college.  Nuff said.

My third, just popped up, is this:  Giants draft Mark McGwire instead of Alan Cockerell and are somehow able to get McGwire to play adequately at 3B (A's had him there when they brought him up).  That means Will Clark at 1B, Robbie Thompson at 2B, Matt Williams at SS, and Mark McGwire at 3B.  That with #2, we would have Barry in LF or CF.

Another would be starting Kirk Rueter in game 7 instead of Livan "Little" Hernandez, though obviously Dusty NOT taking out Ortiz is a better route.  Given what we know today about Nen's physical health, why, WHY did he go to the bullpen so early when the starting pitcher is doing well?

Lastly, I would offer, Juan Marichial pitching only 1 game in a 7 game series in 1962?!?  Since we have hindsight, we know how good he became, still, he was a pretty good pitcher even then, though the Giants had a pretty good staff overall in terms of low ERA (and the other starters did well, to be fair, O'Dell is probably the big question mark since he lost the first game by a big margin).  Still, how could they not start him twice at some point?

I scrolled to the bottom of the survey without looking at the other responses.  I would have to say the Cepeda for Sadecki trade in 1966.  Not so much that  Orlando was traded but for what they got.  Sadecki was an historical flop to be sure but a middle infielder who could hit his weight would have been nice.  The SF club in the mid sixties were literally in the running every year but had Lanier and Schofield and Davenport and Pagan and Hiller and Schroeder and Garbage. The future NL MVP Cepeda should have brought more than an erratic AND hard-luck lefty.  Sadecki won 3 games in 5 months in '66. SF lost to LA by one and a half games.  SF came in second to Cepeda's Cards in '67 and '68.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
I have a tandum of three post 2002 World Series events that I wish had been reversed.
  1. In the 2002/3 Offseason instead of signing Egardo Alfonzo and Ray Durham for a combined 8 years and $55M the Giants re-sign Jeff Kent for 5 years and $45M and give the 3B job to Pedro Feliz a couple of years earlier.
  2. In the 2003/4 Offseason instead of the trade that shell not be mentioned the Giants just give the starting catcher job to Yorvit Torrealba and the closer job to Joe Nathan.
  3. In the 2003/4 Offseason instead of the mass of mediocrity signings Sabean used as an excuse to not sign Vlad Sabean beats the Angels offer with a 6 year and $90M offer.
Therefore we avoid the following
  1. In the 2004/5 Offseason there is no need to sign Benitez, Alou, or Matheny.
  2. In the 2005/6 Offseason there is no need to sign Morris.
  3. In the 2006/7 Offseason there is no need to sign Dave Roberts.
And we produce the following:
  1. Inspite of Barry Bonds injuries in 2005 and reduced playing time in 2006 and 2007 the Giants extend their streak of playoff apearances from two straight (2002 and 2003) to six straight adding (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007).
  2. In these 6 straight playoff appearances the Giants win their first World Series in San Francisco in 2004 and then win two more back to back in 2006 and 2007 to even the SF World Series record at 3 Wins and 3 Loses.

Hey, this is my alternate reality, why are you trying to inject your view of actual reality?

:-)

That said, 5 years vs 2 years should have been more then enough to get Kent to stay with the Giants instead of go to the Astros.  Further, I never bought into Vlad not liking Alou.  In fact I have heard the opposite that Vlad's Mom loved Felipe, wanted Vlad to play for him again, and Vlad is a Momma's boy that tended very much to listen to his mother.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
I've posted it before but here we go again:

Mark Ibanez went on record on KNBR during one of his fill-in gigs that Kent told him in the parking lot after game 5 of the WS that he would never play there again.  Kent had already made up his mind to leave.  We offered him a better deal than the Astros, anyway, and he refused.  He was gone gone gone.

As for Vlad...who knows.  I heard he loved Felipe when we got Felipe then a couple year ago I heard that Vlad did not like playing under Felipe and would not have signed with us as a result.  The truth may never be known.

The Kent thing...that's true.  I don't remember the exact quote but it was along the lines of "You can kiss my ass goodbye cuz I'm never coming back."  It just drives me nuts that all these people on this site still think we could have resigned him.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
Kent turned down 2 years and $20M from the Giants to accept 2 years and $18M from the Astros.  I am sure if we had make the difference bigger (ie 5 years and $45M vs 2 yrs and $18-20M) Kent would have found our offer impossible to refuse inspite of his desire leave.  Money is still the most powerful motive for just about all baseball players and I am sure Jeff Kent is not one of the exceptions.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
That's always amazed me, that people forgot so quickly that Jeff Kent didn't want to come back.  He was done, he hated it here.  During his press conference with the Astros, after they handed him his jersey, a reporter asked what he thought of the pinstripes.  Kent's reply was, "It's a lot better than French Vanilla."  Typically, you don't take your cheap shots on the way out the door unless you're pissy with your former team.  He hated it here, and that's all there is to it.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
I just don't buy this.  The best 6 years of Jeff's career were his six years with the Giants.  He did want out of the Bonds shadow but I don't believe for a minute that he wanted out bad enough to pass up a significantly better deal as opposed to the slightly better deal he actually passed up.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
If you're good enough, you should be able to feel you can duplicate those best six years anywhere, and maybe even outdo them at the Little League stadium that is Enron Park (aptly nicknamed Ten-run Park).

Besides, if we offered him more money, wouldn't the Astros, just up their offer?  They could still remain below our offer because Kent STILL didn't want to play here.  He hated Bonds, he hated Dusty (also on his way out the door)...  A bad enough experience can completely sully what was good.  I don't believe the hype that more money would have gotten Kent to stick it out.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
Well we just disagree.  I think his fueds with both Bonds and Baker and for that matter the whole trucking washing vs motorcycle riding fuss with Sabean was all way blown out of proportion.  Kent even hinted at the end of last year when he was debating staying with the Dodgers that he would not mind at all being re-paired with Barry.

So I guess we need to agree to just accept this  disagreement.  I don't think enough was done to keep Kent and you don't think anything could have been done to keep Kent.

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
By Game 4 of the World Series, Kent was batting an impressive .188.  Game Five buoyed his numbers after he went 3-4 with a double and two homers in the 16-4 rout of the Angels.  A couple meaningless singles in Game 6 kept his average up, before he pulled a beautiful goose egg in Game 7, with a pair of strikeouts.  Sadly, that was his best showing of the 2002 postseason.  The NLDS and NLCS was basically completely un-noteworthy.  Except to note that he SLUGGED .263 in the NLCS.  Kent's wasn't the worst postseason performance ever, but he sure didn't help the Giants win the Series, that's for DAMN sure.  Seriously, I was at every game of the '02 Series (home and road), and he DOGGED it defensively.  Balls hit up the middle he half assed so badly, he made Bonds look good on defense!  He was so far beyond quitting on the team, I thought he was actively trying to sabotage a WS victory.  I'm not making this up, I remember thinking that at the time.

My point is, you're right.  He gave up.  He didn't want to come back, and the only thing that MIGHT have changed his mind would have been giving him such crazy money that the Giants would have been the laughing stock of all pro sports.  And at the time, not five years later, every Giants fan knew he wasn't coming back.  This sort of revisionist history is almost as bad as the "We shouldn't have traded Livo because look what he did after he left" revision.

Not sure if I would take Candy Maldonado actually making the sliding catch in the 1987 playoffs against the Cards...or Kevin Mitchell hitting a homer in the comeback inning of Game 4 of the 1989 World Series against the A's, instead of his warning track flyout.  Either would be fine for me.  Even though neither play would guarantee a series victory, those are two of the the hardest things for me to watch.  We came so close...

Re: alt.reality.sf-giants
An actual baseball alt-reality proposal: No Frod in the 2002 playoffs. None. Ever.

A sort of related to baseball alt-reality proposal: Actually talking to the cute boy Cardinals fan who tried flirting with me at a game in 2005. It was a mid July night and foggy as Hades, and I went with two friends who ended up getting married to each other the next year. How about that? Sitting in the arcade, I wrote up the lineups on my scorecard and this attractive young man (aka, a regulation hottie) wearing a Cardinals cap kept trying to flirt with me. I'm exceptionally dense when it comes to the male intention and how it relates to me, plus I was even more of a hardass then about how sports events=sports events, no flirting, dating, kissy face, and all that allowed. I broke my own rule later in 2006, but whatever. I totally shut him down...complete ice queen act. Later when we left the ballpark my friends asked me why I didn't flirt back with Cute Cardinals boy and now I realize I was a stupid ugly moron with an ugly face and my butt smells and I like to kiss my own butt.

So I'd like to change that and actually have been nice to Cute Cardinals Boy. I blame that night of poor judgement on why I am cursed in dating now. It's the universe cashing in the bad karma generated from shutting him down for no good reason other than me being a failure.
