Barry Bonds is a cheater

Everyone is trying to poke holes into Barry and the homerun record.  This is the most laughable reasoning I have read yet.  It is a must read

Clearly Bonds is at an advantage wearing a batting helmet because it protects him from alien mind control signals beamed from ships floating around in our atmosphere.

Actually, Bonds don't wear a cup, he made a big deal about how he doesn't wear a cup and don't plan to ever, and thus that's why he'll never play 1B.

Re: No cup
Obviously, I mean when you have an erect penis, the weight of the penis (and Bonds is a big daddy), clearly contributes to the weight of the bat without all of the negative effects of having a bigger bat, thus allowing for more home runs.

Therefore viagra should be banned in MLB.

Wow, this immediately moves into second place on my list of favorite Bonds hit pieces. Don't worry, Pearlman, "Barry Bonds Hates Black People" is still #1.

Bonds has performed less well in Home Run Derbies than one might expect because he has no excuse to wear a "protector" facing a batting practice pitcher...

This makes sense. And, sure, Bonds hit 19 batting practice home runs in a pitcher's park on Saturday, primarily to the opposite field, but I heard that his elbow pad took BP without him on Sunday and hit 27.

Stop frothing at the mouth, you guys. I thought this was interesting. The writer fails to mention that other ballplayers have highly protective armor, so, yes, it isn't exactly a fair piece (and what about players with super-sophisticated, custom-designed shoes or gloves?).

But he does a good job outlining from a design/engineering p.o.v. how Bonds's elbow protector might help his swing. Whether it's cheating or not, it's worth discussing, isn't it?

The technology may well be worth discussing, as are Aero-bars, but libeling Bonds in the process kinda makes it clear he doesn't care about the technology or discussing it, just about cutting Bonds down.

Et moi what? I'm not defending the article. If you read my comment, I say it's not a fair article, but I do wonder if there are mechanical advantages to Barry's brace. If you're disappointed that I don't howl like dogs in a kennel when a cat walks by, well, I'm sorry.

The writer of the article didn't have good intentions re. Barry's reputation, obviously, but does that mean we have to throw everything he says in the trash? It's so fucking partisan, it's like political theater around here sometimes. If you're not 100% for Barry, you're against him? Is that how it works?

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
Is it cheating?  Let's get that out of the way right now -- it's not.  It's allowed by the rules of baseball.

Is the elbow guard more advantageous than the use of the maple bat, or the springier baseball, or the smaller ballparks, or high-definition video for reviewing your performance?

Is this a different thing than golfers experimenting with all sorts of fancy hi-tech putters?

Is this news to you guys?
Pitchers have been complaining for years about his armor and the advantages of such as described in the  article.

Not sure how many home runs can be attributed to his elbow armor, the designer steroids or HGH but hell yes this gives him an advantage in the batters box.

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
Bonds has a medical exemption.
It was originally a temporary armor following elbow surgery, allowing him to come back sooner.  Not sure if he can wear it indefinitely or if he must petition the league every year for permission to wear it.  The armor appears to have been modified since the original one.
Otherwise it is not allowed, reason why "everyone" doesn't use it.

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
Even so, it does not help him hit homeruns.  If anthying it allows him to draw more walks.  Since he is able to stand over the plate without fear of getting hit in the elbow again, pitchers have to throw to him outside even more.

by SabeanSupporter on Aug 6, 2007 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
When someone is standing over the plate pitchers avoid throwing inside for fear of hitting the batter.

When someone is standing over the plate pitches that are 'outside' the strike zone aren't outside the reach of the batter.

Read the article that you posted the link to, and no we aren't doing Stonehenge.

by seyheystretch on Aug 6, 2007 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
It's not like they would pitch him inside anyhow.  Being a monster pull-hitter, that's his happy zone, is it not?  Pitchers pitch outside to him just to try to "take away" what power he does have to opposite field.

If I recall, Craig Biggio used to wear a pretty big elbow brace, and has worn one consistently for a while now.  Is he not the career leader in HBP's?  All I'm saying is that if a pitcher wants to pitch inside, he will.  Armor be damned.

by sfgfan on Aug 6, 2007 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
Bonds enjoys quicker access to the inside pitch than average hitters because his "assistant" - counter-intuitively - allows him to turn more rapidly. Everyone understands that skaters accelerate their spins by pulling their arms into their torsos, closer to their axes of rotation. When Bonds is confronted with an inside pitch, he spins like a skater because his upper front arm is "assistant"-sealed tightly against the side of his chest.

Oh , absolutely.
If unrestrained , his arm would flap around unmercifully.

"how Bonds's elbow protector might help his swing"

I didn't see the word "might" anywhere in this piece. If he was a little less sure of himself (or had done some simple double-blind experiments to back this theory), I would have taken this a lot more seriously. And the casual and unexplained "estimate" of 75-100 homers speaks both to arrogance and intellectual laziness of the "Willie Mays would have hit 900 home runs if he didn't play in Candlestick" variety.

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
I love that he spends the entire piece talking about "the weight of the apparatus" without ever telling us what that weight is, or even hinting that he has any idea what it might be.

But my favorite bit is this. Point 2 explains that the apparatus locks when the arms are extended. This gives Bonds an advantage, because normal human elbows, as we all know, are designed to collapse when the arm is extended and locked. After all, we've all seen a hitter suddenly have his elbow unlock and his hands snap back toward his body in the middle of a swing, thereby knocking himself in the face with the bat. It's just part of the game, the way Abner Doubleday intended it.

But the elbow guard is even more nefarious than that! As explained in point 3, at the moment of impact, as the elbow is thus mechanically locked into place, "the weight of the apparatus helps to seal his inner upper arm to his torso." Yes, even though his arms are fully extended, his upper arm is sealed to his torso. Let's all try this at home, shall we?

November 22, 1963, JFK shot in Dallas. If you reexamine the numbers for that date - 11, 22 and 1963 - you get an suspicious connection to Barry Bonds.

Month-November: 1 + 1 = 2.

Would you want to get zapped on the elbow that you've had surgery on before with a 95mph fastball? I bet the Giants prefer that he help protect that 20 million dollar elbow.
