Barry Bonds is a cheater
Everyone is trying to poke holes into Barry and the homerun record. This is the most laughable reasoning I have read yet. It is a must read

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
Bonds has performed less well in Home Run Derbies than one might expect because he has no excuse to wear a "protector" facing a batting practice pitcher...
This makes sense. And, sure, Bonds hit 19 batting practice home runs in a pitcher's park on Saturday, primarily to the opposite field, but I heard that his elbow pad took BP without him on Sunday and hit 27.

But he does a good job outlining from a design/engineering p.o.v. how Bonds's elbow protector might help his swing. Whether it's cheating or not, it's worth discussing, isn't it?

et tu Lefty?
when Lemond pushed the cycling-technology envelope by using special handle-bars during the 1989 Tour de France, they called him an INNOVATOR, not a cheater.
The technology may well be worth discussing, as are Aero-bars, but libeling Bonds in the process kinda makes it clear he doesn't care about the technology or discussing it, just about cutting Bonds down.

Re: et tu Lefty?
The writer of the article didn't have good intentions re. Barry's reputation, obviously, but does that mean we have to throw everything he says in the trash? It's so fucking partisan, it's like political theater around here sometimes. If you're not 100% for Barry, you're against him? Is that how it works?

BP Radio just posted an interview with Mark Silva, the guy that custom makes the brace for Barry this morning. It's a good listen as Will Carol and Silva run down the list discussing each item in the original article.

Backtrack all you like, but we're not all ad-hominem-howling like 'dogs', neither ar we 'frothing' at our mouths. We are rejecting weak, irresponsible mud-slinging disguised as journalism. You don't have to be %100 for Bonds to see thru this article.

Is the elbow guard more advantageous than the use of the maple bat, or the springier baseball, or the smaller ballparks, or high-definition video for reviewing your performance?
Is this a different thing than golfers experimenting with all sorts of fancy hi-tech putters?

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
Pitchers have been complaining for years about his armor and the advantages of such as described in the article.
Not sure how many home runs can be attributed to his elbow armor, the designer steroids or HGH but hell yes this gives him an advantage in the batters box.

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
It was originally a temporary armor following elbow surgery, allowing him to come back sooner. Not sure if he can wear it indefinitely or if he must petition the league every year for permission to wear it. The armor appears to have been modified since the original one.
Otherwise it is not allowed, reason why "everyone" doesn't use it.

If I recall, Craig Biggio used to wear a pretty big elbow brace, and has worn one consistently for a while now. Is he not the career leader in HBP's? All I'm saying is that if a pitcher wants to pitch inside, he will. Armor be damned.

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
I didn't see the word "might" anywhere in this piece. If he was a little less sure of himself (or had done some simple double-blind experiments to back this theory), I would have taken this a lot more seriously. And the casual and unexplained "estimate" of 75-100 homers speaks both to arrogance and intellectual laziness of the "Willie Mays would have hit 900 home runs if he didn't play in Candlestick" variety.

Re: Barry Bonds is a cheater
But my favorite bit is this. Point 2 explains that the apparatus locks when the arms are extended. This gives Bonds an advantage, because normal human elbows, as we all know, are designed to collapse when the arm is extended and locked. After all, we've all seen a hitter suddenly have his elbow unlock and his hands snap back toward his body in the middle of a swing, thereby knocking himself in the face with the bat. It's just part of the game, the way Abner Doubleday intended it.
But the elbow guard is even more nefarious than that! As explained in point 3, at the moment of impact, as the elbow is thus mechanically locked into place, "the weight of the apparatus helps to seal his inner upper arm to his torso." Yes, even though his arms are fully extended, his upper arm is sealed to his torso. Let's all try this at home, shall we?

The Conspiracy Continues
Month-November: 1 + 1 = 2.
Day-22: 2 + 2 = 4.
Year-1963: 1 + 9 + 6 + 3 = 19
Add 2 + 4 + 19 = 25 BARRY BONDS'S NUMBER!

"In the early years of his career, lacking "armor", Bonds never achieved an OPS above 1.000. Beginning with the first appearance of armor in '92, he surpassed that number and continued to do so until last year..."
Interestingly, you know what else happened to Bonds in '92? He turned 27. Had to be the elbow protector though.

Would you want to get zapped on the elbow that you've had surgery on before with a 95mph fastball? I bet the Giants prefer that he help protect that 20 million dollar elbow.
