Open Matt Cain Appreciation Thread

Home runs hit by Matt Cain while Matt Cain is pitching: 2

Home runs hit by Bengie Molina, Ray Durham, Rich Aurilia, Ryan Klesko, Randy Winn, Omar Vizquel, Dave Roberts, and Kevin Frandsen while Matt Cain is pitching: 3

That's over 26 starts and 164 innings. Nice. It's an exercise in cherry-picking - notice the absence of Pedro Feliz (3 homers while Cain is on the mound), Fred Lewis (2), and Barry Bonds (6) - and it's not like the Giants should be expecting home runs out of Vizquel and Roberts, but none of that should get in the way of the point. That point:

The Giants haven't been doing a good job at scoring runs, especially with Matt Cain on the mound.

This kind of analysis is why I sit atop a blog and t-shirt empire. Recognize.

So this is an official Matt Cain Appreciation Thread, because it would have been easy for Cain to fail. On July 23, he only lasted 4.1 innings and fell to 3-12. His ERA was just 4.02, but he had every right to curl up into a little ball and start feeling sorry for himself.

Not only that, but he's had to sit back and watch Tim Lincecum become the darling young pitcher in the organization. Lincecum is now the fire-throwing arm talked about in hushed tones. Lincecum is the one on the cover of Young Giants Pitcher Quarterly. Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. Cripes, what does a guy have to do to get some love around here?

Cain's still a beast. He's still just 22, an age where a lot of pitchers are still in their first full professional season. He still has the fastball, he still has the curveball, and he's refining the changeup. His control is a continuing issue, but I refer you back to the second point: He's 22 years old.

Open Matt Cain Appreciation Thread. Here's to a man (a certain man), and for this team you may be sure that he'll do all he can. Who is this one? This favorite son? It's Matthew Cain! (It's Mister Cain!) He doesn't like that "mister", he likes Matthew Cain!

(Grant repeats the song and dances around his office a little.)

Here's to one of the reasons we'll continue to watch Giants baseball for the next couple of years.

Re: Open Matt Cain Appreciation Thread
I love Matt Cain so, so much. If anything, what he's been through this year, and the dignified way he's dealt with it, makes me love him even more. He's the object of my biggest mancrush at the moment. Please don't tell Dave Flemming.

Also, serious question here: did Matt Cain get 2 or 4 runs of support in yesterday's start? Is it possible for RBIs credited to a pitcher to count as run support? I assume the answer is yes, but just wanted one of the esteemed statheads/nerderati on the site to confirm.

The list of guys who have collectively hit only 2 home runs is almost the complete list of guys who suck on this team.  Almost.

Wait.. is that picture real?  That makes me sad :(

Lincecum's great and all but Cain is still by far my favorite Giants pitcher.  If you only saw the way he acted on the mound you'd think he was 30.

The pic is real.  It was from a media day and all the reporters are trying to get Sweeney.  It was during Greenie-gate.

It was no reflection on Cain. It was around the time the media sucked Sweeney into Bonds and PEDgate, so everyone wanted to stir stuff up with him (Sweeney).

It wasn't long ago there was some chatter on this site about Cain needing to skip a start or two.

Nice to see him breaking through that wall.  There won't be many of those upside-down records in the future if he continues to pitch this well.

I've been in attendance for both of Cain's dingers. Rekkanize.

Love the guy. His composure in the face of what he's had to put up with this season? Job-like. Matt Morris should look to Cainer for a lesson in how to conduct himself as a teammate and a human being.

Re: Open Matt Cain Appreciation Thread
No MCAT would be complete without a pointer to the Matt Cain Facts diary.

I too am impressed by Cain's composure. Especially after the Aug. 3 game, where he pitched 7 shutout innings, left with two runners on in the 8th, and immediately had to watch Chulk give up a game tying homer. He looked so lost, like he was wondering when he was ever gonna win another game, and exactly what the devil was going to want in exchange for it.

So what did he come back with? Four quality starts in a row. One of 'em he lost, admittedly, but that's the Giants offense for you.

I mean what a competitor. . .I have no proof of this and this is pure speculation. . but what kind of man gets pummeled for the year with no run support, then takes it upon himself to do more by working with the stick? You've got to admire someone who is the face of adversity steps up and says screw this, there has to be something more I can do. . . and does it. End of Story.

I've heard numerous comments from the announcers and his teammates that Cain's compsure has been astounding in light of what he's endured this season.  It's just a game and not like dealing with cancer or something, but I admire him for not getting pouty or going off on his teammates.

Re: Open Matt Cain Appreciation Thread
Great telling photo of Cain sitting by himself while the reporters mob the newest kid on the block.

All this confusion on how much to play the young prospects reminds me of a pitcher who sat on the team bench for the whole of the '55 World Series, never pitched to a single batter. Two years later, he's leading the league in strikeouts and what happens? His manager doesn't pitch him for 45 days! The next year he gets hurt. Two years later, despite setting stikeout records and playing on a winning World Series he still has trouble getting playing time. He begs to be traded. After going 8-13 he's ready to quit baseball. And his team moves into a pitcher's ballpark where the left-field foul pole doesn't start at 250 feet and the guy's ERA drops from 4 something to 1 something. He goes on to become a living legend.
The obvious point - Development - even of the greatest players, is often a hit and miss affair taking several seasons. Whatever the case with the position players, Cain appears a dream prospect come true. The day may not be far off when the Giants will quite literally have to bind him with hoops of gold.
