Wow, I love the '62 Mets ahead of us in the division. . .

But the question remains, are the '62 getting younger before we do?

Oh, I didn't know the West expanded to include the '62 Mets. It would be nice if Selig announced these things, because I've been telling everybody the Giants are coming in fifth in the West. Now I'm going to look like an idiot!

If Sabean has anything to do with Bochy playing these guys day in day out, it's only going to last until the end of August at which point all bets will be off.

If Sabean is keeping his hands off, you really have to turn on Bochy instead. Because he's the guy keeping the young guys on the bench.

As much as I like the kid believe he is a little headstrong when it comes to being a starting pitcher. He has always been a starter until SF converted him last season. He has a different temperment when he is a starter.

by wilriv21 on Aug 21, 2007 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Jonathan Sanchez Update
I think he got rushed a little and wasn't quite ready to face really advanced competition.  His walk rates were perfectly adequate, if never good, through double-A, and he was converted there.  His walk rate in triple-A is back to acceptable levels this year.

You can hardly blame the team for rushing him given his K rates, but I think it hurt his control a bit.

"Varsity Lineup"
Kruk mentioned before the game that today the Giants had the "Varsity" playing today. I think we have established that when this varsity team plays, the Giants never score any runs. This is the lineup that has given Matt Cain 13 losses and has now given Lincecum a taste of that wonderful cocktail.

I want Ray Durham DFA'd immediately, and I want to see at least 2 of the group of Frandsen, Davis, and Ortmeier in the lineup every single day. We had a winning streak when those guys were playing.

211 of Durham's 401 ABs this year have some with men on base, and 127 of those were with RISP. He is hitting .246 with men on and .213 with RISP. If he hits even .260 in either situation, I bet the Giants are a .500 team. RAY DURHAM IS THE PRIMARY REASON THAT THE GIANTS ARE IN LAST PLACE

If pitchers ever start consistently throwing the ball at batter's shoetops, Ray-Ray would hit .400.

where's salemicus or walrusman with their win probability totals from last year?

by joebirdie3 on Aug 21, 2007 9:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I haven't had the time to total them myself..
But I was definitely going to post them up after the year.  A few high and lows for the Giants:

Barry Bonds +4.15
Mark Sweeney +1.04 (HUH?)
Rajai Davis +0.44
Fred Lewis +0.35
Guillermo Rodriguez +0.28

Pedro Feliz -0.89
Rich Aurilia -1.25
Ray Durham -1.67
Omar Vizquel -2.72
Kevin Frandsen -2.76

Lance Niekro AAA Watch: 108 AB .287/.352/.463 6 2B 2 3B 3 HR 11 BB 0.2 IP 3 H 0 BB 0 K 27.00 ERA(through 8/13)

by WalrusMan on Aug 21, 2007 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sweeney's makes sense
He's almost exclusively a pinch hitter, so he's probably put in later in the games and more likely in close games as well. He's done pretty well in that role this year, so his WPA (I assume this is what you mean) is pretty high up there.

by awesomer on Aug 22, 2007 12:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Others also make sense
They've had much more limited playing time so their small samples hide the suck that the regs like Omar and Ray are displaying.

I feel for the kid...his grandmother dies...comes back, pitches his ass off, looks like a tribute game, but it falls apart in the 9th....Just a bitter taste in my mouth about it

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/21
Personally, and there's nothing rational about this, but I blame Bochy.  He shouldn't have had anyone warming up at the start of the 9th.  It sends the wrong fucking message.  I can't prove it one way or another, but to me, Bochy shit the bed tonight.  In that regard, he fits in perfectly with this team.

Dreamy agrees with you...
From sfgate this morning:
Omar Vizquel, who's considered future manager material, said he might have left Lincecum in the game after the first three batters reached base in the ninth. He also suggested it might have been tough on Lincecum that Hennessey already was warming up before Lincecum's first pitch in the ninth and Kline joined Hennessey shortly thereafter.

"I feel so bad for the kid, the way the ninth inning developed right before his eyes," Vizquel said. "As soon as I see two guys go out to the bullpen, I think, 'Why is this happening?' I don't know if he looked up there. He's young. Anything can get him out of focus. You've got to concentrate for 27 outs, especially if you have a one-run lead."

Bzuh?
What just happened here? I listened to the whole game, and I just can't even. Should Bochy have pulled him after 8? After 1 hit in the 9th? When? What? Is it just that Tim lost it suddenly? Is it all the pen's fault? So many questions, so much baseball angst.

I'll be there tomorrow in the arcade with a visiting Cubs fan. Lettuce hope Zito can make some use of himself. Also, I LOLed over "what's with all the anal?" Sometimes, that's a question you gotta ask yourself.

Re: Bzuh?
Pulling a Jason also means pulling your arm out of the socket.

Lince's wicked motion just looks like it wears him down.

Kid's small, and he hasn't thrown this much in his life. I say 80-90 pitches and out the rest of the way for Lincecum, plus an extra day off here and there.

Re: Bzuh?
Perhaps he also got just a little too amped and caught up in the moment. That first hit came on a pretty fat pitch. I think he lost just enough focus, to cause him to overthrow. Its a learning experience for him.  The first time ever in that situation. I have every confidence that he will take this as a hard-earned and bitter lesson and will grow from it, just like he has from every setback he's run up against so far.  Eventually somebody is going to pay for this, and I don't want to be the team facing him when payback comes. Somewhere down the line, he's going to face Theriot, Jones, and Lee again. Not this year, but soon enough. He won't forget those guys ever. He will be looking for them in seasons to come. Thats the motivation of every great competitor.

Re: Bzuh?
Working through situations like these should make the team stronger experience-wise next year. I'm off the "gotta win" bandwagon for this year's team, and on the "play 'em tough" bandwagon to toughen up the younger players for next year.

Anybody with me?

It would be nice to be with you, but the only guyw we're toughening with this kind of crap up are Lincecum and Cain.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/21
I flew 3000 miles to see my first game of the year and this is what I got!! Just a couple of quick things.
  1. Why the fuck were there so many Cub fans at the game?? If you're a Giant fan and you can't make it to the game, give your freaking ticket to a Giant fan!!
  2. Why the fuck did the Giants play "Enter Sandman" when Ryan Dempster is coming into the game?? Are they stupid, or are they Cub fans too??
  3. I think Tim got a little overamped in the ninth as he approached his first career shutout and complete game. I thought Bochy handled everything right.
  4. Ray-tire Durham, please. This guy is just stealing money from the Giants.
  5. There was absolutely no reaction from the crowd when Scott Eyre came into the game. Do the fans actually remember he once played for the Giants. Cheer or boo, please!!
  6. The Giants show Barry Bonds hitting homeruns between every inning. Do they really not want him back next year?? What are they going to show?? Dave Roberts drawing a walk??
  7. To the stupid bitch lady at the concession stand. Why did you tell me your stupid weak cardboard carrying cases can carry two large sodas?? I knew it was a mistake the minute I picked it up. You should clean my pants for me!!

Yes -- the Sanchez feat was discussed in real time during the Lincecum gem.

We fear JSnatch will be called up soon and be the next victim of a great pitching performance with the usual veteran run support.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/21
the only good thing about tonight was that Armando Benitez got bombed, blowing a game for the Marlins by giving up four runs, including a homerun by Ludwick. The best thing was that the runs were unearned due to an error, so Armando is going to give one of his "I did my job" speeches after the game.

I went to last night's game, which was awesome until the 9th.  Lincecum's breaking ball looked like it got to about 10' in front of the hitter before the bottom dropped out.  He'd follow an 80 mph curve with 94 mph heat.  Nasty!  Too bad he couldn't close it out, but he was dealin'.

Pretty full house last night considering.  There were even people sitting in the LF upper deck (after the bend).
