Pittsburgh's PTBNL Rumor-and-Analysis

Pittsburgh's paper is reporting that the Giants will be getting one of two pitchers on the 40-Man roster.  That, combined with the fact a PTBNL can't be on the active roster, limits the choices to eight guys.

So, here's a very quick, insomniac-written breakdown.

(I'll see about doing a Dodger breakdown later, but all I have to go on there is 'a left-handed pitcher and an infielder.'  That'll take a bit longer.)

* Bryan Bullington

Hmmm...Bullington, the first overall pick in 2002 and whose $4M bonus was the biggest in Pirates history.  Maybe he's who Littlefield wants to get rid of due to all that.  Bullington has been effective, with a career minor league ERA of 3.45, but a low strikeout rate.  He's had good control, although this year he hasn't been as good...probably because of Labrum surgery in 2005.  Haven't heard of how his recovery has gone, but he hasn't hit 95 since college, even before his surgery.

* Sean Burnett

Another 1st round pick, 19th overall in 2000 out of high school.  He was the #2 prospect out of the Pirates system before the '04 season...and missed '05.  Uh...this is a pattern after two guys.  His fastball is high 80's and was declining before his injury.  Injury or not, he hasn't had an ERA under five at Triple-A or higher until this year, with a current 4.48 ERA.  His K/9 rate is under four, and walk rate this season is near 5/9-IP.  Ugh.  Looking like a lefty specialist at best.

* Dave 'Satch' Davidson

Very erratic stats across the board.  His walk rate is high and has been most of his career, and his K-rate has dropped this year.  Imagine this: he's often injured, and has been recovering for seemingly a long time.  BA's chat guy said he expects him to pitch in the majors this year now that he's healthy...heh.

* Yosian Herrera

Cuban player who defected in the offseason.  As a starter in Double-A, he has had a 4.47 ERA and a very poor strikeout rate and a fairly high but not too high walk rate.  He is much more effective against right handed batters, and I don't have a read on his 'stuff'.

* Franquelis Osoria

This guy was waived by the Dodgers and the Pirates claimed him.  Working almost exclusively as a reliever in the minors, but is back to having a good year, with his hit and walk rates dropping and his K-rate rising.  However, he's been effective without being overwhelming.  He works off a strong sinker, but not much else.

* Juan Perez

Former Red Sox prospect, signed as a free agent by the Mets in 2005 and waived, picked up by the Pirates in 2006.  Works off of a slider, but has poor control, and is very hittable.

* Romulo Sanchez

Another reliever.  Having a good year in Double-A, with his walk rate at a career low and K-rate at a high.  Venezuelan with an interesting background...according to the Cube, he was signed by the Dodgers in 2002, but released in 2004 with no stats (in the US, at least).  Pirates picked him up two months later, and he made his American debut in 2005.  Reportedly, his velocity mysteriously improved to the mid-90's.  Has no effective secondary pitch right now.

* Josh Shortslef

He has a 3-12 record in the minors, but has a 4.52 ERA to earn it.  Hittable and his control in wild this year, with a low K rate.  He's smart, but hasn't been effective for quite some time.  Sorry, but there's just nothing more to write about with him, or more interesting.
