minor lines, 8/9/07

AAA: Fresno had an off-day
(It is their final scheduled off-day of the season, their only off-day between the all-star break and the end of the season on Labor Day.)

Grizzlies on the PCL leaderboards:
--Hitters:
AVG: Timpner 5th, Schierholtz 6th
OBP: Timpner 14th, Leone 15th
SLG: Schierholtz 15th
OPS: Leone 20th, Schierholtz 22nd

AA: Connecticut at Akron postponed by rain
(Reportedly, "the game will only be made up if the outcome would affect playoff standings at the end of the regular season.")

A+: San Jose lost to Stockton 6-2

San Jose: SS Brian Bocock: 1 for 3, BB, SF, SO, E
San Jose: C Pablo Sandoval: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SO
San Jose: 3B David Maroul: 1 for 4

San Jose: RHP Henry Sosa: 2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 0 HR
San Jose: RHP Sergio Romo: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR

Sandoval reached base three times, bringing his OBP up to .300.  Bocock also reached base twice, maintaining his OBP just barely above .300.  He also committed his 19th error.  Despite having one of the highest strikeout rates in the organization, Maroul was the only Giants starter without a strikeout.

Sosa had his second shortest start among ten starts since his promotion.  He allowed hits to 7 of the 16 batters he faced, although only one XBH.  By his standards, is this a bad appearance for Romo?  It's the first time has has allowed two hits in an inning or less in quite a while.  His H/IP slipped above 0.60.

A-: Augusta lost to Lakewood 3-1

Augusta: 2B Marus Sanders: 1 for 2, BB

Augusta: RHP Adam Cowart: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0 HR
Lakewood: LHP Antonio Bastardo: 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 0 HR--1 HB, 1 WP

Sanders was the only GreenJacket to reach base twice, as he had one of the team's three hits and one of their three walks.  He raised his OBP to .358.  Unfortunately, his OBP is higher than his SLG.

Cowart improved his ERA to 2.52.  His 12/5 GO/FO line is in keeping with his 2.30 GO.AO ratio.  His K/IP is just 0.56, but with outstanding control, his K/BB remains above 3.00.  The Phillies 21-year-old Bastardo has had an outstanding season in a dozen starts with 50 H, 29 BB and 72 K in 75.0 IP with a 1.68 ERA.

ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Boise 11-3

Salem-Keizer: 2B Brock Bond: 1 for 2, 3 BB
Salem-Keizer: DH Chad Rothford: 3 for 4, SH

Salem-Keizer: LHP Jared Cranston: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 HR--1 HB, 1 WP, 2 PO
Salem-Keizer: LHP Andy DeLaGarza: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
Boise: RHP Christopher Huseby: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 0 HR--3 WP

It seems like Bond is almost incapable of making an out.  His .521 OBP got a little higher.  Three singles raised Rothford's AVG to .309.

In his nine starts this year, seven times Cranston has had more strikeouts than hits.  On the season he has 23 H, 12 BB and 38 K in 33.0 IP.  DeLaGarza had his longest appearance, helping to lower his ERA to 2.70.  Huseby was considered among the Cubs top ten prospects at the start of the year, but his performance has not quite lived up to that billing.  He has a 4.06 ERA and peripherals stats indicative of that ERA.

R: Giants defeated Padres 3-2

Scottsdale: SS Charlie Culberson: 2 for 4, 2B, SO, SB, E
Scottsdale: 3B Angel Villalona: 2 for 3, BB

Scottsdale: RHP Oliver Odle: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 HR
Scottsdale: LHP Daniel Runzler: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR--1 HB

Villalona reached base three times, improving the .331 OBP with which he entered the night.  Culberson, who is sixteen months older than Villalona, has been swinging a hot bat after a cool start to his pro career.  With five multi-hit performances in his last seven games, he has raised his AVG to .268.  Defense seems to be an issue, though, with 13 errors.

Odle has been impressive since entering the rotation.  Even with one near-disaster start (5 ER in 2.0 IP), he has a 2.63 ERA over his six starts.  As a starter, his K/BB ratio remains 6.00.  Runzler faced the minimum three batters in the 9th inning to pick up his second save.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
Brock Bond is the kind of guy I love.  I was totally wrong about him, and he drives me insane.

I obviously doubt Bond will not keep this up, but I'm encouraged by his ability to walk more than he strikes out.  I like that he's hitting more extra base hits in S-K than in Arizona, but I'd definitely prefer more speed or more power.

I guess this might be a nice place to ask, Steve, how far off Brock was from your Top 40 list.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
seriously the guy's named antonio bastardo?

awesome, when he's announced for the bigs, it better be, "IL BASTARDO!!!"

in other news, i hate that scott mcclain is our best hitter at triple a

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
McClain leads the team in hitting home runs, and also leads the team in stats that might be considered ancillary to power...

So why is he the best 'hitter'?  Isn't there more to hitting than power?

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
I should add that all the stats he leads the team in are totalled stats, and (shocker!) he has played more games than anyone else in Fresno.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
this is entirely true, however none of the relevant stat categories are lead by any "prospect" not named schierholtz.  the fact that leone and mcclain are actually getting this much playing time is disgusting to me.  I'm sorry for my hasty 1:30 a.m. judgment.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
I'd consider the categories led by Clay Timpner relevant, though I'd wish he didn't lead the CS stat.

I do think Timpner's a prospect.  Not a top ceiling guy, but I said two years ago that I thought he had a better chance to be a regular major leaguer than Ortmeier, who does have a higher ceiling.  Timpner just gets what he needs to out of his tools...if he stole bases like he has the speed and smarts too, he'd be a legitimate CF starter candidate.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
A variant of that second paragraph could be used for Schierholtz, Lewis, Ortmeier, and probably Bowker too - "if guy X does Y, he could start at Z."

I am all for having two of Schierholtz, Lewis, Ortmeier, and Timpner with the big club at the beginning of next year and ensuring that they get regular playing time, with the other two back at Fresno with Bowker.  The guys in Fresno would be getting a whole new season at AAA, so they better tear it up down there.  If someone in the bigs falters, give someone in AAA a legitimate shot.

The tough part is that none of these guys has a ceiling tremendously higher than any of the others, and with Davis in the mix, the team has about 6 guys playing for 2, maybe 3, MLB spots - and that doesn't count EME or Velez.  I would be surprised if one or two of these guys weren't traded in the offseason, if only as part of a larger package.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
If I remember correctly we used to have our very own Bastardo several years ago - Jose Bastardo. I don't think he never played above Salem-Keizer for the Giants and somehow ended up with the Royals.

I appreciate slow guys who manage to leg out the occasional triple though, so far this year Sandoval has 4...which is braggable.

Re: minor lines, 8/9/07
Pablo is large, but not necessarily slow - I recall he didn't just lumber around the bases when I have seen him run and he has fairly quick reflexes around first base.

Charlie Culberson
Culberson has come on real strong in the second half of the AZL season.  He's hitting .348 over his last 10 games and his OBP is higher than Noonan's for the season to date.  At this point, how sure are we that Noonan is the better prospect?  I have to say that Culberson seems to be turning into a pleasant surprise.  Almost as anxious to see his lines as Big V's.

I liked him on draft day and I'm glad to see him doing better than expected in the AZL so far.
