Sabean gone soon?

From Olney's chat today:

Joe (SF): Barry Zito-worst signing ever! It may be early, but I have no faith and it at least cracks the top 10 of bad signings with Mike Hampton and Darren Dreifort. Any news on when Sabes gets the axe?

Buster Olney: Joe: Kevin Kernan of the NY Post reported on TV the other day that he's hearing that Brian Sabean will be let go after the All-Star break. Either way, it's hard to imagine him returning for '08...

I'd be surprised if he went before the year is up, but wouldn't be against it either.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Chopping him after the All-Star Break is very odd timing.  That's right before the trading deadline frenzy.  Who is going to be able to step into the GM's spot and make any kinds of moves?  An outside guy won't have the time to learn the Giants organization, let alone get up to speed on the other 29.

Promoting an inside guy on an interim basis?  To make some of the most important decisions facing the franchise for the next few years?  Are you nuts??

No, I think that letting Sabean go at this point is actually counter-productive.  The time to do it is early September, after the waiver-trade deadline and well before the hot stove league starts.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Yeah, but look at it this way: Sabean is probably still seeing us as buyers . . .

can you say Matt Cain for Julio Franco?

On a more serious note, yes, it would be horrible timing.  But I think management is so tired of this they'd be willing to let him go.  For all we know, they could have someone who knows the organization inside and out waiting in the wings who has some good ideas.

Brian Anderson: generic name, unique talent.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I know you're at least partially kidding, but Sabean has said absolutely nothing about being buyers this year.  Those few times he's commented publicly about this year's trading deadline, he's hinted strongly that this would be the year the Giants would be sellers.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I think now is a bad time to let Sabean go. First, I think he has enough integrity to do his best through the trade deadline, and I don't think he'll be a buyer. During the draft, for example, he didn't focus on quick fixes. Right or wrong, he went after high-upside, risky players who will take some time to develop.

Second, it seems difficult to fill the GM position during the middle of the season. Is San Diego or L.A. or any other organization with good GM candidates going to let us start interviewing their people this summer? Probably not.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
The reason Sabes made those draft picks is because that's what he's always done.  He's a guy set in his routine no matter what, and hates making it look like he's listening to the "Lunatic Fringe."  Because the Giants have almost always been buyers at the deadline, Sabean might just be a buyer again out of stubbornness.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I think if they let Sabean go now, it means that they already have somebody in mind who they know they could get, hence, no long interview process.  Baer and Magowan would have to be beyond idiotic to fire Sabean midseason if they didn't have both a good idea of who they want to replace him and that they should be able to pry him away from his current employer.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Well, the Royals did add Dayton Moore midseason last year. If we had someone like that lined up (Chris Antonelli, etc.) I wouldn't mind letting Sabean go after the All Star Break.

Good point. Part of me is really scared that when Sabean goes, we're going to get someone even worse.

Yeah, I can just imagine replacing him with Allard Baird or Jim Bowden or something.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
If the Giants already have someone in mind, and he's the right guy for the job, now would be the perfect time to let Sabean go. Give the new guy some time to properly assess the situation and go into the offseason fully prepared to make widespread replacements throughout the organization, and make all the necessary trades and FA signings he'll need to make.

Hopefully Sabean will be willing to resign gracefully, but either way, now is the best time to replace him.

What if
Sabean had enough of Magowan & Co.? Thinking back to when he dealt away Benitez, Sabean was more than upset. He sounded upset at the entire organization and not just the players. Maybe, just maybe, Sabean has submitted his resignation and Magowan & Co. asked him to stay on thru the draft and ASG (possibly the trade deadline).

Re: Sabean gone soon?
How about after the trade deadline? I know it runs the risk of Sabean making another stupid trade, but it would be nice to have him gone soon and it's not like there's a lot to do after except for waiver trades.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Just do it.
I don't figure the odds of Sabean getting out of the trade deadline better than break-even (assuming that his replacement stands pat) to be all that great.

Also, it's entirely possible that we get someone worse.  Cie la vie.  It's time for Sabes to make the final cut ... himself.

I agree with the point about not allowing the fear of getting someone worse to prevent the Giants from making a move.  I certainly wouldn't hesitate to get rid of Pedro Feliz, for fear of ending up with someone worse.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I voted to let him go now.  It's obvious the season is as good as over and we should be sellers.  Why would you want a guy who knows he is as good as gone orchestrating that?  Maybe he wouldn't purposely sabotage it, but would he be at all enthusiastic about it?  I would think that a good GM candidate would be familiar enough with Players throughout the majors and minors including our own that they could get up to speed fairly quickly.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
In all fairness, he conducted a fairly good draft.  He stayed the course, even though his own future was out of his hands.  I think that speaks loads of him.

Good GM candidates may be familiar with top names and such throughout all of baseball, but could you really expect them to know any specific team through and through?  If the Giants axe Sabean before the trade deadline, I expect a really quiet couple of weeks.

It is also so wrong of ownership to put the onus of Zito's contract on Sabean.  I strongly doubt he was the only one pulling those strings.  I doubt even further he was one of the people pulling the strings hardest.

While I know he may not be here next season, I doubt he's going anywhere before the year is over. If they're going to get rid of him after the trade deadline, they could have done so this week, last week, and so on.  Why wait?

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I disagree. That would have been a good draft three, four, maybe five years ago. It was the wrong strategy for this year's draft. He needs to go; the sooner the better.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Strategy-wise, it's hard to say what is right or wrong.  What is known is that the potential that was yielded was solid.  Thats all you can ask for in a draft.

I know the team doesn't develop hitters well.  I know the team doesn't even draft many hitters high in the draft, and that may contribute to their failures.  But honestly, if what is perceived to be the regime's strength is in scouting (and developing pitching), would you really want a guy in his last year to venture off and try something he's weak in?

At least in the next couple of years, the next GM (if Sabean is gone) may have a solid crop of pitchers to promote or trade from.  I believe that the likelihood of Sabean drafting a hitter worth using or trading is a lot lower than that of him taking a pitcher.  It may not be A LOT lower, but the difference should be somewhat significant.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I understand what you're saying, sfgfan. I just think that at every position in our early-round picks, there was a better prospect available. I would have chosen Alderson over Bumgarner, and Michael Main and Chris Withrow over both of them, if you want to stay with HS pitchers. But there were good hitters available as well. Why not take a shot at Matt Mangini for 3B? Steve points out in his minor lines how well he's doing in the NWL. They couldn't even spend the Fairley pick on a college 3B? Or heck, even Will Middlebrooks, a HS 3B?

As for it being his last draft, I don't think Brian looked at it that way, so that shouldn't affect his decision-making process. We are in desperate need of corner IF help, and there were several available in the top 100; we ignored them all.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Wasn't Zito primarily Magowan and Baer's doing?  I thought the entire contract was backed by the notion of "we need a new face of the franchise to replace BB," i.e. more thought into marketing than actually fielding a winning team.

The more and more I hear about the inner-workings of the franchise, the less I hate Brian Sabean.

Don't get me wrong, he still screwed up.  Letting go of Nathan, Liriano, and Bonser was completely on him.  So was the Accardo trade.  Still, though.  It's hard to do your job well when upper-management is seemingly working against you.  Much like The Boss and Cashman.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
Oh, and I forgot to add one thing in case there was any misunderstanding.  I still want Sabean gone on one condition:  Hire DePodesta!

Seriously, doesn't he look like a genius right about now?  Here's a great article I plucked from another great Giants blog:

DePo
I have to admit a prejudice against Paul DePodesta because I thought Dan Evans did a fine job as GM of the Dodgers and I thought he got a raw deal when they hired DePo.  Having said that, I think DePo got a even rawer deal when he got fired and replaced by Ned Colletti, who has be very Brian Sabeanesque in is diligent blocking of all those terrific Dodger prospects.  I have a grudging respect for the moves DePodesta made while he was GM of the Dodgers.

Dan Evans' genius was in hiring Logan White, letting him build up the farm system and refusing to trade his prospects away for short term gain.  DePo made some very shrewd, economically sound moves to improve the team in the short run while continuing to hang onto the prospects Evans and White bequeathed to him.

I could live with either Evans or DePo as our next GM.  The guy in Cleveland (Antonelli?) and the guy in Florida( Hill?) sound like good choices too.  I also think Kim Ng should be interviewed and considered having apprenticed under Evans, DePo and Colletti.

Re: Sabean gone soon?
I'm coming around on DePodesta.  I'm not sure if I think he'd really be the best candidate out there, but I think he might be the best candidate for the Giants.  What this organization really needs, I think, is a shakeup of massive proportions.  Blow it all up and let the rebuilding begin.  DePodesta, I think, would do that without fear and be quite effective at it.
