Matt Morris

I hesitate to use the word "choker" -- it isn't like most of those guys were trying to choke -- but those are four players who had a chance to really, really help the San Francisco Giants with a good performance. They couldn't. Morris's situation was a little different, as he spread his ineptitude over several games, but the result was the same.

It's hard to blame Sabean because I'm guessing any Morris offers were of the "okay, you give us $5M and Matt Morris, and we'll give you a 27-year-old AA backup catcher"-variety.

EDIT: Morris was traded to the Pirates for Rajai Davis and a player to be named later. They'd better not be giving a whole bunch of salary back because this guy doesn't seem like he could crack the starting lineup in Fresno. Well, maybe that's not entirely accurate. If his performance in AAA this year is a new standard instead of a fluke, he could be a useful player. Probably not, though....

DOUBLE EDIT: Didn't see that he was a switch hitter with no discernible platoon split. He might be a nice guy to have around if Lewis and Schierholtz are on the same roster. I was never a big Dan Ortmeier fan, so maybe Davis can be the Jason Ellison of the future? Yay?

TRIPLES ALLEY EDIT: According to Henry Schulman of the Chronicle, the Giants are not sending money back in the deal. Awesome. Thanks to Skaldheim/Jefferson for the heads up.

Re: Nothing.
I don't blame Matt Morris. I blame the guy who gave him that contract. If you look at all the players that were traded the last couple of days, there's not a player on that list who makes the money for 2008 that Matt Morris does. (or Ray Durham for that matter) By overpaying for mediocre talent, Brian Sabean priced himself right out of the trade deadline. Be thankful though, because he COULD have traded young pitching, and really made us angry!!

Re: Nothing.
I disagree - the FA market this past offseason made Morris' contract perfectly reasonable - for somebody decent.  He pitched his way out of a respectable trade.  If we had dealt Morris a month ago (when he was getting All-Star hype (HA!)) we could've had Wlad Balentien for him.

If there's a silver lining, it's that the Braves have now pushed all-in and they still haven't fixed the back of their rotation. They may yet take Morris off our hands.

Re: Nothing.
Shoot, I still think Morris is an easy sell job, even if you're not getting back premium prospects.  He's in an unhappy situation (look at his homer chase comments) playing for a losing team.  Moved to a contender without the distraction of Bonds, Morris is more likely to revert back to his former numbers, as he's had a 20 win season already and he knows how to pitch.

I'm not saying every GM out there would buy all that, but the unhappy player and lousy team should entice some teams.

Re: Nothing.
My point, Mike, is that Sabes SHOULD be able to sell Morris to other GMs.  But he didn't.  Seriously, Morris is a much better option than some of the pitchers who actually got traded.

But now Morris is just serving to piss us all off.

Re: Nothing.
I dunno.  The "he used to be good, so just because he hasn't been for the last couple years doesn't mean he won't be again" argument doesn't seem to work nearly as well on other GMs around the league as it does on Sabean.

Hell, Sabean probably just convinced HIMSELF that Morris will still revert to his old self, so trading him wouldn't make sense.

I hate this team.

The only bright spot will be if Sabean talks the talk (from KNBR last week) and that, regardless of whether veterans got traded or not, the youngsters (Lewis, Frandsen, Schierholtz, etc.) are going to see a lot more playing time beginning in August, even if the high-priced vets had to sit on the bench 3-4 times a week.

Re: Nothing.
the idea that Morris is an unhappy player is inaccurate. He might not be thrilled with the offensive support he has received, or the Bonds homerun distraction, but he still said last week that he loves San Francisco and he signed with the Giants because he wanted to pitch for the Giants. A couple of comments he made while frustrated hardly makes him a malcontent.

I haven't felt this... deflated since the draft.

It seems like the two things everyone was saying about this season was that (1) the draft and (2) the trade deadline were key for our future prospects.

Now, the draft was probably good (not so much if Fairley and Bumgarner never get signed), but it wasn't really what we were hoping for/expecting. The trade deadline has obviously been an absolute abortion.

I mean... why did they re-sign Sabean again?

I'm confused because don't we have like seventeen outfielders?

BLB
Randay
Roberts
Fast Freddie
Ort
Schierholz

that's enough outfielders! It seems like we'll have to get rid of someone else to even make room for Davis.

Re: Something?
Not funny, just juvenile.  Jesus fucking Christ, for an hour people on here were about to comit hari kiri - because of NO movement.  Now we get a significant trade, and still many people here can find nothing but the bad side.  You deserve your own fucking company.
We get rid of approx 10% of next year's salary on a guy not needed at all.  We pick up a guy with speed, defense and, as far as I can tell a 300+ BA.  We pick up a RH hitter, doing well in AAA.  So fucking what if it creates competition for Lewis, Schierholtz, et al?  Maybe one of them can be traded this winter.
We save some $4 mil this year.  WE open a spot in the rotation, likely for Ortiz, who has been stretching out.  Sure, I'd like to see Misch, but I think he will be up and in the rotation before the year is out.  Everything can't happen in one day.  We DIDN'T trade young pitching.  Fucking A, we got something breathing for Morris.  I think I'll have a drink in celebration.  (think Benitez/Messenger).

Should've just kept Morris if it came to this, pray that he does something better next year and/or he'll look more attractive being in the final year of his contract. Trading him for a 26 year old OFer with no bat is exactly what you're not supposed to do.

It depends on the matchup, really.  For the most part, though, I'd have to agree.  That is unless you're gamble on football games.  College point spreads definitely make for easier pickings than NFL  games.

See the problem with you're statement that college football is dull as shit is that you've probably never been to a game where a 100,000 fans come to a school to cheer for their team, and they party from friday until sunday.  Conferences like the big 10 and sec, along with the Big 12 are extremely big on football unlike the pac-10.

I don't give a flying frig about conferences outside the Pac10 and the WAC. Those are actually interesting to me and I keep up on them. When I say college football is boring, I'm talking about the so called great Big 10 and other overhyped BS.

I agree. Forget about what you got for him in terms of talent. If, and this is a big if, the Pirates are taking on his salary for 2008, the Giants just cleared 10 million bucks they can use to improve the offense via free agency. Will Sabean waste that 10 million?? Of course. But on a hot July day you can always dream.

Not 7 bad deals.  Klesko (almost for nothing), Molina (one of our few bats), and Roberts were all good deals.  Aurilia has been hurt and is not paralyzingly expensive.  Zito, tho, Jesus, I hope it's just a bad year.

The Molina deal was good for about a month... but right now, he's got an 83 OPS+, he's horrible defensively (I've never seen a catcher give up so many passed balls/wild pitches) and he seems to be incapable of starting more than ~100 games in a season without wearing down horribly.

Re: Take it easy now, Brian
I definitely don't think the Roberts deal was very good.  Thus far, he's been a reincarnation of Steve Finley in a Giants Uniform.  Klesko was cheap, so I guess not paying anything makes getting nothing in return more worthwhile.  Molina is debatable, but as mentioned, there's also the Feliz deal and the Randy Winn deal.  Not to mention the slew of other deals just like these (washed up players for too much money) that the Giants have been signing in recent years.

One year five million dollars for Pedro Feliz was not a bad deal. He has had a decent year offensively, and his defense has been superb. A staff full of young arms needs a good defensive infield, and I think defense is something you only pay attention to if you don't have it.

Re: Something?
I think what is scary is J Sanch's lack of a breaking ball and his splits vs RH hitters.  Ya gotta have either 2 +++ pitches or 3 + pitches (see Lincecum, T.).  As a RP, JSanch can be brought in the face 2 LHs.  As a starter, MLB managers will load their line up w/ RH hitter - and he'll remind us of the dearly departed M Morris.

by allfrank on Jul 31, 2007 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Something?
I think you're placing a little too muchg weight on this year's splits (in just 30 IP). last year, in 40 IP, they were much closer together (RHH OPS: .740, LHH OPS: .667). Also, early in the year, he had no secondary pitches he could over at all, but since he came back up from the minors, he's been spotting that change much better. that should help him vs. RHH in the long run.

by English Professor on Jul 31, 2007 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Something?
I hope that's true (that the change will get him over the hump;) but sooner rather than later he's going to need a useful 3d pitch, don't you think?

by allfrank on Jul 31, 2007 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Something?
Yes, absolutely. You just don't see too many quality starters with only 2 dependable pitches. Jason Schmidt down the stretch in '03 when he couldn't throw anything but fastballs and changes, is one of the rare exceptions.

Sanchez's slider is far and away his weakest pitch, and the one he needs to improve to become an elite starter. He hangs it far too much right now. It was better last year, but he hung it too much then as well. The problem is, as a reliever, he's never forced to throw it. He has the best K/9 on the team, and among the best in baseball throwing just fastballs and changes, so why should he resort to his 3rd best pitch? As a starter, he'd have to go it more often (and might even struggle initially because of it), and I think it would improve with usage/time.

Re: Something?
Not too long ago, Lefty calculated the Giants 2008 payroll commitments:

http://www.leftymalo.com/2007/07/2008_payroll.php

Removing Morris means the 2008 payroll is currently about $70 million.  Winn, Roberts and Durham make up about a third of that.

Re: Something?
But, I think Lefty included deferred payments, and the Giants have said deferred payments are NOT part of the yearly payroll budgets.  (Don't ask me, my wife balances my check book).  Something about a different accoutn.  I guess that's like having a different checkbook.

Morris's spot in the rotation could become a pretty interesting carousel ride for the rest of the year.

Let everybody in Fresno take a shot! 3 shots for a dollar! Trade in prizes with a win to get a BIGGER prize!

Or, more likely, Russ Ortiz is back in the rotation. Which is also kind of cool with me. I'd rather not see Sanchez lose his arm from explosionitis by getting thrown into the rotation with no stretching time beforehand.

That and Morris' 4.35 has him the 149th pitcher in the NL, out of a total 313.  This includes all pitchers who've recorded stats for the year, but I would expect, it would be similar if you could find a list of just starters.  So, he is about average, a little above - a decent #3, a good #4 SP.  (But we know better).

The Pirates really are the worst run franchise in all of baseball. They are constantly complaining about the payroll, and while they win this trade in terms of actual talent (i.e. Morris has very little, Davis has none) they make their highest paid players MATT MORRIS AND JACK WILSON. Hah.

Not that Sabean comes out looking much better as he could probably have traded Morris three weeks ago for somebody with a big league future. He does shave off the payroll though, so it's something.

Actually, that may be slightly harsh on my part WRT Rajai Davis. I think that Morris is the more valuable player, but Davis's smattering of on-base skills and ability to play center probably give him a big league future as a fourth outfielder. As long as he isn't taking playing time from Lewis or Schierholtz I don't mind him.

That was bad phrasing on my part.  I'm just saying, if you were an opposing GM, wouldn't you have waited it out to see if Morris came back down to earth before the trade deadline before giving up any prospects of note?  Contending or not, it makes little sense to rush into a trade for a veteran who's recent track record isn't as shiny as his first few months of this season.

You can't even fault him for the Mando trade.

He was the best free agent in the team's biggest area of need, and he was coming off one of the best relief seasons ever.  (0.818 WHIP!)

I, like most of us, was excited when we signed him.  I thought the Giants finally had a real closer; no one predicted he would flame out as spectacularly as he did.

Re: Cleaning up his own mess..
I disagree that "no one predicted he would flame out as spectacularly as he did." Anyone who watched him pitch for the Mets was aware of his fragile psyche. Mando had a great relief season in the anti-pressure cooker of South Florida. Anytime he tried to save a game in front of more than 500 people, he tended to choke.

It wasn't the size of the crowd with Armando, it was the importance of the game. If he blew five saves all year with the Mets, it would be the five most important games of the year. His playoff record was abysmal even at the height of his success. Fan and media reaction got to Armando as well. You can't really cheer for him as badly as he pitched with the Giants, but all that booing at home certainly didn't help him.

Forget Florida... he spent 4 1/2 seasons pitching the ninth inning as a Met, where pennant races and the New York media made every game a big one, and he compiled a 2.70 ERA. If only he had choked that well for us. We were supposedly getting a dominating pitcher who couldn't handle pressure. Instead, we just got a bad and injured pitcher.

Man, you loves you some Fred Lewis, don't you? I think Davis probably is a better starting candidate, since I assume he can catch the ball once in while. More to the point, Lewis can't hit lefties, so they can both play.

Even more to the point, Sabean is doing exactly what someone running a rebuilding team should do: collect as much low-cost talent as you possibly can, and let the players sort things out with their performance.

Re: Something?
My guess is that Roberts never sees another lefty. Winn, on the other hand, is a switch hitter, and therefore is completely invulnerable to platoon splits! (okay, not really.)

Davis has out-OBP'd Lewis in both AAA and the majors this year, even though Lewis has been lucky with his BABIP and sheltered from seeing many lefties. Lewis was generally better before this year, though.

I'd say Lewis has a better (though still slim) chance of becoming an actual above-average starter, while Davis has a better chance of being a decent contributor. I just think Lewis is a brutal outfielder, and at his age he's not likely to outgrow it.

Er, PECOTA doesn't particularly like him, projects him to hit .283/.336/.386 - barely passable for a fourth outfielder - and to steal some bases at a good rate. In contrast, it thinks Fred Lewis can hit  .271/.350/.421 with more upside.

Re: Something?
Its a $12.5 million dump - I wish Sabean had dumped him a month and a half ago, but that's foresight we've learned not to expect from Sabes. The next step is to clean the Aegean stables-  Feliz for anyone who wants him (Justin Leone can probably match his production right now - and Russel Branyan can certainly out-hit Feliz right now) and the salary savings, not expecting a prospect. Winn and Roberts on waivers - Roberts is a solid player who might a mediocre prospect, but I'd be surprised if Winn did. I think Steve Kline is the only Giants vet with value now, since there's no way Klesko would get through waivers IMO - the latter might be worth sitting on for the draft picks at seasons end.

Just talked to a coworker...
I just spoke with a coworker who's a serious Pirates fan. It's his belief that this trade was about meeting each other's needs: the Pirates' need to spend money, and the Giants' need for an outfielder who never, ever, ever hits the cutoff man.

He's of the opinion that Davis is a brutal defensive outfielder, but I don't know how accurate that is.

There's something familiar about this guy...
Rajai Davis's PECOTA comps:

#16 - Dave Roberts
#15 - Alex Sanchez
#14 - Jason Ellison
#3 - Darren Lewis
#1 - Carlos Valderrama

In his defense, his 2007 season has been much better than his 2006 season, particularly in terms of strikeout rate. His PECOTA comps should be a little less scary next year.

Re: There's something familiar about this guy...
Yeah he struggled with fewer than 50 ABs last year with the big club.  This year, since he was called up he's hitting just over 270 - I would say that is pretty encouraging for a guy with (I think) fewer than 100 MLB ABs.

Re: There's something familiar about this guy...
PECOTA takes into account all minor league stats as well, so his current ratings are based largely on his mediocre 2005 and 2006 seasons in the minors. He had a .683 OPS in AAA in 2006 compared to .853 this year.

Hitting .270 in 48 scattered big league at-bats this year doesn't mean anything, although it's encouraging to see that he isn't striking out much, since that used to be a problem for him in the minors.

But aside from believing this trade to be pointless, I think we gave up too much. If it's true that the Giants aren't picking up any of Morris's contract, there's no reason the Pirates should have traded anything more than some 24-year-old reliever in A-ball. The Giants just wanted to dump that contract. Rajai Davis isn't a great prospect, but players with speed and the ability to play center field have value.

Its still bothers me that people look at trades as straight player swaps like this is fantasy baseball instead of a business. This is a straight up attempt to free up cash for next year because they know they will have to make a splash. If deferred monies really do come from a separate fund and are not counted against the '08 payroll then the Giants will be contenders for ANY free agents(read: AROD and HUNTER and a closer).

Good step in the right direction for Sabean. I'm glad he's finally getting to do things on his own. The youth movement should continue by playing Frandsen every day. He may not be able to play the same position every day, but at least put him in when someone else needs a day off. That way he will be seeing 4 or 5 ABs per game and get more experience for next year when he does have a starting position in the infield (most likely third, unless by some act of God we can dump Durham and get A-Rod). My chances of sleeping with Kiera Knightly are higher than this happening, but I can still dream. Also, come Sept. 1 and the rosters expand, bochy should make every game a futures game by playing Lewis, Ortmeier, and Schierholtz (and maybe this new guy) as much as possible

Any team using Kevin Frandsen as a platoon outfielder could use a speedy righty. If I had to guess, I'd expect him to join the team immediately and start vs. the lefty Hendrickson tomorrow.

By Saturday we'll have to send someone down when we call up a replacement for Morris, and that could very well be Davis, but Lewis and Frandsen are candidates as well. Or one of the old guys will go on the DL.

Ideas on who'll be gotten in the waiver market?  A first baseman?....

Re: Something?
I don't care one bit who came in return for Morris.  The fact that he has just sucked is reason enough to dump him.  We sent no cash?  NO CASH?  Littlefield is the dumbest GM in the history of baseball.

That's $12.5m the team doesn't have to pay Morris, and almost anymore that cash goes is better than paying Captain Nibble.

Re: Something?
Yeah, hopefully I'll be proven wrong, but getting a little more money to spend in 2008 probably means committing a lot of cash from new deals to the budgets of 2009, 2010 and beyond. Why do I think we just cleared out enough salary for the first year of David Eckstein's four-year, $45M deal?

Sabean hinted that he got offers from contenders who weren't willing to take on all of Morris's salary. If the prospects were better (like, I don't know, Morris and $5M for Balentin), I wish he would have gone for it.

I read somewhere that KC took the Davies deal from ATL instead of Balentien from SEA.  That sounds nuts to me.

Re: Something?
Am I the only one who was surprised that Sweeney, Morris, and/or Kline didn't go? I thought contenders could never have enough relief pitching, especially a lefty specialist with Kline's numbers over the past month. And isn't there always supposed to be some sort of demand for pinch hitters? I know we wouldn't have gotten much for them or dumped any salary, but we could have made room for some of the guys in AAA.

Not surprised about Kline, but I am surprised about Sweeney. With him just moving into 2nd for all-time pinch hits, i thought someone would grab him. Roberts too, for that matter. he's got postseason "mojo."

Re: Something?
Can we all LOL at Dave Littlefield, please?

"We've talked about acquiring a veteran starter the past couple seasons and haven't been able to acquire the guy we were looking for," general manager Dave Littlefield said. "I think Matt Morris is the right player who kind of fits in with what we're trying to do. This is someone we think will be a good fit for us."

Also, Morris:

saying of the environment with last-place San Francisco, "It's been hard. You almost learn to accept losing. I hate to say that, but it's true." He also called it "laid back."

I'm sorry you don't realize that you were part of the problem, Matty. :(

Re: Something?
Two things:
  1. Let this be a lesson to anyone who criticizes Sabean (myself included).  There are worse GMs out there and we should count ourselves lucky that they don't run the Giants.
  2. WTF makes Morris think that things will be any better in Pittsburgh?  If he thinks losing is accepted here, I hope he likes playing for a team that hasn't sniffed the playoffs in 15 years.

Very good start Brian Sabean
Addition thru subtraction is more than fine with me. You traded salary without taking on salary which will be great this winter. Hopefully you have laid the groundwork for other salary relief deals in August and this winter. This way when you make a trade you can take on some salary from a team looking to unload a talented player with a hefty salary rather than only looking into the FA market.

Please keep to your word and play the kids. They are exciting and fun to watch plus you then can determine if they can play or not. This way you will know your needs going into 2008. All I am looking for is some direction and hope. If I can sense either I will follow my beloved SF Giants like a lemming.

Good trade here. Davis is clearly nothing (i'm pissed someone beat me to the pecota comps, they are hilarious) but it is worth it just to dump all the salary. Plus, the PTBNL could end up being useful someday if we're lucky, whoever it may be.

Time to get Roberts, Winn, and Klesko through waivers.

Glass if half full speaking...
Overall it seems like a pretty good deal as long as it's official that the Bucs are eating that entire contract. Our other previous dealings with the Pirates have worked out pretty well for us. We got Bonds when they couldn't afford to re-sign him and we robbed them of Jason Schmidt. Thanks Pirates! They took an albatross off our hands and are still one of the few teams below us in the standings.

i wonder how Davis feels about the trade...
he may not have been traded to a contender, but he did get traded into history - he'll get to say he played with Bonds this year.

will that be exciting, or intimidating for him?
