The Template?
The A's are considering trading Joe Blanton. Because Blanton is three-plus seasons from free agency, the A's are reportedly asking for three top-flight prospects, with the Dodgers being the team linked to the deal.
Blanton will be a free agent: after 2010
Lowry will be a free agent: after 2010 (if $6.25M option is picked up)
Blanton's career ERA - 4.05 (ERA+ of 109)
Lowry's career ERA - 3.92 (ERA+ of 110)
Blanton's 2007 ERA - 3.69 (ERA+ of 118)
Lowry's 2007 ERA - 3.40 (ERA+ of 127)
Blanton's career K/9 - 5.21
Lowry's career K/9 - 6.22
Blanton's 2007 K/9 - 5.49
Lowry's 2007 K/9 - 5.24
Blanton's age - 26
Lowry's age - 26
Blanton's career WHIP - 1.31
Lowry's career WHIP - 1.35
Blanton's 2007 WHIP - 1.17
Lowry's 2007 WHIP - ...uh, that's not really relevant. Ahem. (1.43)
The last category is where Blanton has it all over Lowry this season, as Blanton has been a strike-throwing monster and Lowry's been allowing way too many walks. Other than that, it would be impossible to find a closer comparison for Noah Lowry's trade value. It's amazing that such a close comparable to Lowry rumored to go in the exact kind of trade many folks think the Giants should make. If Blanton is traded, it will be fascinating to see what the A's get in return.
Difficulty: There's only one Ned Colletti. Just because the A's will get Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Andre Ethier, a crime-solving robot, and $500,000 in Trader Joe's gift cards doesn't mean the Giants would get a package half as nice.
Random note: Lowry currently has the 10th-best ERA in the NL. I had no idea....

Re: The Template?
Brian Sabean, please trade Noah Lowry for a crime-solving robot. Many of our nation's most high-profile crimes remain unsolved, awaiting the relentless application of emotionless logic. Noah Lowry would appeal greatly to owners of crime-solving robots, as they're suckers for gaudy ERAs and associate WHIPs with Thursday nights at the Trocadero Transfer.

Re: The Template?
Personally, I think a Morris for Escobar trade could be in the works as the not yet revealed third leg of Atlanta's go for it in 2007 moves. The other two known legs being of course the Texiera and Dotel trades. I would not be suprised to see us add Vizquel and Sweeney with the Braves to add Thorton.

Re: The Template?
The Giants cannot do this because they don't have anybody to take Lowry's place.
The Giants have only two consistent starters. Lowry and Lincecum. Morris and Zito are utter and complete disasters and if they were minimum salary guys, they would have been long gone....long ago. And the other, Cain is quite capable of setting the San Francisco record for most losses (18) in a single season.
I just don't see it.

Re: The Template?
And, hey, Cain rules, pal. Losses schmosses. Not that you were implying he sucks, but that needs to be stated whenever discussing his atrocious record.
Can we trade for Rick Peterson? I think our staff and especially Zito would appreciate that.

Re: The Template?
Pat Misch obviously doesn't have the Lowry major league track record, but he is not only a good replacement, but he's a very similar pitcher. In fact, Misch's career minor league numbers are very similar to Lowry's, if not better in some areas.
Also...who exactly do the A's have to replace him? Their top-rated pitching prospect, Jason Windsor, had a 5.40 ERA in Sacramento before falling to injury. They have guys too old to be Blanton-level prospects, like 26-year old Dan Meyer or soon-to-be 28-year old Colby Lewis. There's also Dallas Braden, who is having a good year, but wasn't even listed by BA in the Oakland Top 30 prospects.
And then you criticize Cain for losses, considering the types of games he's lost? Have you even been watching this team?

Re: The Template?
Maybe this is the guy Bonds was referring to when he said:
"You mean that little midget man who absolutely knows jack ... about baseball, who never played the game before?"
Could it be? I wonder. Only the nose knows for sure. :)

Re: Would you turn down a deal?
I'm just trying to capture the mood of the lynch mob that would target Sabean if he traded the Reservoir of Pure Hope that is Matt Cain.
If Matty ever left, there would be a howlin'.

Re: Redeux
C'mon. Sanchez or Misch replacing Cain? Lowry, sure, but not the HurriCain. He's a force of nature... that loses a lot. But a force none the less.

Re: The Template?
I'll stick with Cain and let other teams keep those kinds of pipe dreams.
And, also, Matt Cain = Jesus. Before Lincecum came around, thats all anyone could talk about. Cain still rocks. Almost no trade for Cain would make the G-Men better in the long run.

Re: The Template?
Yeah, that's the problem. The good news is, Colletti sent a solid chunk of the Dodgers' minor league depth away last season and is poised to do it again over the next month. But I don't expect us to be the direct recipient of his generosity.

Re: The Template?
beane effed up by trading ethier in the first place, and he may have prospects behind blanton, but its a mistake to lose him
by bacci40 on Jul 31, 2007 12:52 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Depends on the prospects
If Blanton could get LaRoche, Hu, and Meloan, or in my scenario, those 3 + Betemit for Blanton + a reliever not named Street or Casilla, then I'd be pretty happy with the trade. A's get a pretty much ML ready left side of the infield for cheap the next 6 years, and Betemit at 2nd for the next 3. Meloan is ready to step in and hurl fire, which could open the door to trade Street for a AAA ready arm.
It all depends on who's coming, but I have full trust that Beane knows what he is doing.

Re: The Template?
- Lowry is a lefty and generally lefties are worth more.
- Lowry is signed threw up to 2010 as opposed to arbitration eligable and generally cost certainty is worth more then cost unknown.
I still don't want to trade Noah, but it is possible for another team to make an offer too good to pass up.

Re: How about lowry and morris in a Package deal
Knowing that the As are holding out for three of top prospects, I have an idea.
I think the Dodgers or Mariners could be persuaded into thinking that Lowry is worth nearly that and two months ago Morris was worth a top prospect (but not now).
So to make this trade work you have to give us 3 top guys for both (and no salary back).
