Re: List ahoy....
The bit about his shot off a certain spectacled Canadian closer could use a bit of an update after the Kruk and Kuip interview Barry segment shown last week.

Barry says that while touring Japan with the closer, they came to a gentlemans agreement that in a game in which the Giants were 3 or more runs ahead/behind, the closer would only throw his best gas and that Barry would do his best to take him deep.  It doesn't cheapen it one bit for me, but it's funny to think that BLB really did know what was coming.

Re: List ahoy....
Ok, these are obvious, but they're favorite Bonds moments and they aren't on the list:

7/24/03. Barry celebrates his birthday by throwing out the go ahead run to end the top of the 9th and then sends the fans home with a walk off a pitch later.

6/12/03. Going into the top of the 9th, the Giants trail the White Sox 4-2, and Bonds has K'd three consecutive ABs vs. Bartolo Colon. But in the 9th Barry takes Colon deep to tie the game. Later in the inning Aurilia hits a grand slam to seal the win.

And my all-time favorite: 10/1/03. Friday night of the season ending 4 game series in LA. The Giants are tied in the standings with Atlanta. A loss could effectively end the season.  LA gets out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but in the 3rd Bonds hits a 3-run HR to tie the game.  Two innings later he launches another 3-run HR that puts the Giants on top to stay and they live to fight another day.  One of favorite games in Giants history.

Re: List ahoy....
9/18/05: Barry hits #705 -- an absolute moon shot into McCovey Cove -- off Dodgers reliever Hong-Chih Kuo in the bottom of the 8th. I was sitting in Section 319, and it may have been the only game I've ever attended where I knew a ball was heading for the Cove the split second it left the bat. Extra credit for being hit against the Evils. Even more astonishing: it made the score 5-3, and then Armando Benitez pitched a perfect 9th inning. Just a fun, memorable afternoon at the ballpark.

Re: List ahoy....
Dude, I think I was at this game. Barry had two strikes on him and just foul tipped the previous pitch before destroying the next pitch. I think Lowry started but wasn't entirely effective going maybe 5+. Alou threw out a runner at the plate right after trying, and failing, to the do the exact thing a batter earlier. And Mike F'n Matheny hit the go ahead home run to give us the lead.

It's probably the best game I've ever been too, as my record in games attended is horrible.

Adopted Giant: Randy Winn. Can't wait for Zito to start Opening Day '08 so I can get a leg up on my drinking.

Pseudocode for watching Giants game, 2nd half 2007:

1) Watch 1st inning.  Does Giants pitcher have it?

YES - keep watching until bullpen blows it, then go to 2.
 NO - go to 2.

2) Did Barry bat in the last inning you watched?

YES - Switch to different channel, go to 4 when you think he will bat again.

 NO  - go to 3

3) Is Barry due up soon?

YES - Pay half attention until his at bat.

 NO - Go to 2.

Re: List ahoy....
2 of the most memorable, goose-bumps inducing Bonds shots for me were August 19 and 21, 2003, versus the Braves.  Barry had been out about a week b/c  his father had just passed away (Linden taking LF duties in the meantime).  August 19, 1st game back, game is tied 4-4 with BB leading off the 10th.  Atlanta brings in Ray King, Bonds specialist - home run, game over.  Then 2 nights later, Worrell blows a 3-0 Schmidt lead in the 9th (this was the year the bullpen cost him a shot at 20 wins with a few of these BS), but Barry wins it again in the 10th, this time off of Trey Hodges.

I watched the end of both these games with my girlfriend while we were on a little trip in Mendocino before she was about to move to NYC, and even she, not a baseball fan, could not believe Bonds was human.  To come back from mourning his father and to win 2 games in 3 days, when the whole world was expecting he would HR, it really made me feel lucky to have witnessed it and the rest of his amazing career.  Looking back at these box scores too makes me marvel at how good the giants used to be with Barry and the Spare Parts.

2003 was a magical year - i remember the 2 Roger listed (the 3rd was from 93, right?), and I was at a game vs the Twins 6/4/03 when the giants loaded the bases (walks to Cruz, Durham, Aurilia) and Barry came up.  Barry was automatic these days, the only question was how he would win it.  He lined a clean single off another lefty, Rincon. Another win, another day in 1st.

Too bad the magic ran out with Ponson, Cruz's stone glove, and Snow's lack of speed.  Its been all downhill since then.  But Barry is simply unbelievable.

Re: i feel like an idiot...
Timing is off I think. Bobby Bonds didn't pass away until August 23. But during that Atlanta series much (a little bit, anyway) was made of the fact that Barry hit his walk-offs and then immediately rushed off to the hospital. I think he even apologized to the Braves for appearing to celebrate too much (because he was emotional, obviously, not because he was completely jubilant) after the one off King.

So on a side note: Nate Schierholtz has been working on his power stroke since returning to AAA.  He is .288/.321/.630 since we sent him down July 1st.  630 SLUGGING?!?!?

I think we need to have Nate put on like 15-20 lbs. of muscle and teach him first base.

List ahoy
My two most memorable moments:

I remember during his homerun chase in that day game in Colorado when he hit 3 homeruns.  It was after that day people really started to believe he could get the record.

And the most incredible moment for me had to be the 485 foot shot in the World Series in Game 2.

Re: List ahoy....
Why waste Nate's great arm at 1B? Let somebody like Brian Horwitz play 1B - we could use his OBP. Or teach EME 1B; I don't think we currently have a 1B on the DL, he seems like a good fit there.

Re: List ahoy....
One of my favorite Bonds moments was an almost homer. It was Bonds first AB in '05 after being out for the majority of it recovering from his surgeries. You could feel the electricity in the air even watching on TV. When Barry clobbered the ball, Mays Field exploded. Even though it ended up being a ground-rule double, it was still amazing considering he hadn't played in a game in about a year and had just come back from leg surgery. It proved that Barry Bonds is awesome, and anyone who doesn't think so is lame.

ESPN Sunday night game in Atlanta, I think August 28, 2004.  Hank Aaron was in attendence.  On consecutive pitches from Russ Ortiz, Bonds hit two lasers described as the 2nd & 3rd longest ever at Turner Field; I believe #s 694 & 695.

Right. I was at the game, but saw Aaron on the ESPN highlights. He didn't have too much to say about it.  Peter Gammons said the 2nd one was the hardest ball he'd seen hit in 3 years.  Either one would have taken out the Chop-Shop Restaurant, but missed it to the right.

Baseball's Grand Asshat speaks!

"Out of respect for the tradition of this game, the magnitude of the record, and the fact that all citizens in this country are innocent until proven guilty, I will attend Barry Bonds' next games to observe his potential tying and breaking of the home run record, subject to my commitments to the Hall of Fame this weekend. I will make an additional statement when the record is tied," Selig said.

Does anyone remember the one against the Phillies, I think Jose Mesa during 2004 in SF?  Bonds jack-knifed out of the way of a fastball that was about 2 feet inside, then drilled the next pitch into the water. It cleared the wall in the deepest part of right-center, estimated at 485 feet.
