Durham To The DL?

"DL is a possibility. We'll have a better idea where he's at after the game," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Who are our options to replace Ray if necessary?  To me it seems we only have one choice that is currently on the 40 Man Roster and that is Nate Schierholtz.  I just can not see the Giants promoting Travis Ishikawa or Eugenio Velez who are both in AA and respectively not producing or just starting to play after recovering from injury.

We do have a slot open on the 40 Man Roster so is there a non roster player at Fresno that would be a better choice then Nate Schierholtz?

My money is on the return of Lance Niekro.  We could use another righthanded bat way more then we could use another lefty in the Outfield.

Re: Durham To The DL?
You are probably right.  With the way Aurilia has been hitting, it isn't a bad idea.

Good.  Let Frandsen get some more playing time while Durham hits .260

Re: Durham To The DL?
At least initially I think the Giants would go with Klesko at 1B, Aurilia at 2B, Feliz at 3B, and Vizquel at SS with both Frandsen and Niekro on the bench against both righties and lefties.

Niekro would play when Klesko needs some rest and Frandsen would play when Aurila, Feliz, or Vizquel need some rest.

Re: Durham To The DL?
I think your idea of bringing Lance Niekro back is an intriguing one, Rainman.  Other possibilities would probably be Nate Schierholtz and Tomas De La Rosa, but I think I actually like your idea of Niekro best.

Of course the downside is that if Lance were to perform well and the Giants returned him to Fresno when Ray Durham was able to play again, the Giants might lose him.  In fact, at that point wouldn't Lance be eligible to declare himself a free agent?

With the Giants also having 16 games in 16 days beginning Tuesday, it could be possible they would bring up another pitcher -- probably Pat Misch.  That could help prepare Misch for what I would think might be his eventually replacing Steve Kline, who would be eligible to be traded come July.

The Giants could also bring up a third catcher to give them more flexibility to pinch run or bring in a defensive replacement to provide extra rest for Bengie Molina, but I would doubt that would be the direction the Giants will go.

If Ray is out, that will hurt the Giants depth.  But it will also give them the flexibility to perhaps try something different.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Durham looked to me like he was about to heat up again, getting good contact and beginning to string together some important hits. I doubt Frandsen would be able to match any potential offensive numbers Ray would, but I wouldn't mind having him start if Ray does hit the DL.

Re: Durham To The DL?
I see Frandsen as more of a Mark Loretta type with a lower OBP, which ain't so bad for my tastes.

I wrote an article about the Frandsen vs. Durham debate back in February (based on PECOTA projections) if you wanna take a look:

Eh? Take away Loretta's OBP and you're not left with much.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Frandsen is a utility player at best at this stage of his career. I think he will get better though. The Giants need help right now. They are about to see two lefties in the next two games, so Lance Niekro makes some sense here if Ray is disabled. As for Nate Schierholz, I would call him up right now to replace Freddie Lewis. I like my rightfielders to be able to catch the ball. All that speed that Lewis has is a complete waste because he has no baseball instincts whatsoever.

Re: Durham To The DL?
For what it's worth, Schierholtz gets no higher marks on his defense from what I've read. He's a converted third baseman.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Nate has a stronger arm than Freddie Lewis.  I would also take Freddie's defense over Nate's, although Nate can indeed cover a bit of ground for a big guy.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Mark, you're just so picky ("I want my rightfielders to be able to catch the ball.") Next you'll want a power-hitting firstbaseman, then a dominant closer, then a management team that understands how to draft and develop players. You see where all this insanity leads?

you're right, I got carried away for a minute and asked for too much. By the way, do I know you?? You know my name, but I don't know yours.

Re: Durham To The DL?
You mentioned your name when we all told about ourselves in a diary (over the winter??). Also, Roger (I think) tends to refer to you by name. We seem to be about the same age, but we don't know each other. Always glad to see your comments, and since I'm in central time zone, you and I seem to have time to post around the same times. I'll stick to "rx" if you prefer - no offense intended. And my name actually is Lyle.

Re: Durham To The DL?
oh no, call me whatever you like, (within reason!!) Mark is fine. Sharksrog knows my name because we've been fighting over the Giants for about a decade already on the AOL board. Good to see you remembered my comments from so long ago. I thought maybe you were on that board with another screenname and that was how you knew me. I enjoy reading your comments too, along with all the other guys here. It's great to come here and see all these comments from intelligent Giant fans. The AOL board has pretty much died due to Bonds hating troll invasions, and it's good to be troll free over here.

Re: Durham To The DL?
I'd have to say the Giants will probably call up De La Rosa.  It isn't exciting or sexy, but the Giants need a third middle infielder if Durham goes on the DL.  There just isn't much more to it.

Re: Durham To The DL?
The Giants have 3 MI's on the roster. 4, if out count Feliz's ability to play sort in a pinch. Calling up a MI is the obvious move, but the Giants have enough roster flexibility that they don't necessarily have to do it.

Re: Durham To The DL?
If Niekro is called up, they actually might be able to use him.  If de la Rosa is called up, he will sit.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Niekro's DFA meant dropping him from the 40 man.  I'm not sure what the status of the 40 man is right now, would they have to outright somebody else to bring Lance back to the majors?

Re: Durham To The DL?
Also, unless he's made a miraculous recovery of which I am unaware, Valdez could be added to the 60-day DL retroactive to the beginning of the season.

Re: Durham To The DL?
You'd still have to waive him to send him back down, and I think the same would be true of DeRosa (who would also have to be added to the 40 man).  The simplest thing would be to just call up someone already on the 40 man who has options left. Given the verbal love he was shown in ST, I guess it wouldn't be shocking to see Eugenio Velez warm the bench for a couple weeks.  If nothing else he gives you a designated speedy pinch runner.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Up until about three weeks ago the Giants were getting by without Kevin Frandsen.  With Kevin aboard and Ray Durham possibly disabled for only about 10 more days, I would think the Giants could get by without De La Rosa.  And if someone ELSE got injured on the infield, they could THEN call up Tomas.

Re: Durham To The DL?
Moreover, to those who claim Frandsen will never be more than a utility infielder, while that may well be true, isn't now a perfect time to put that theory to the test? If Franny's going to be the 2nd baseman of the future, now -- with Durham going on the DL, with a 10-game road trip against one excellent and two pretty good teams, with 16 days in a row without an off-day -- is when he should be getting plenty of starts to see what he can or can't do. Bringing up De La Rosa or starting Aurilia at second (.632 OPS to Frandsen's .675 -- not that either of those numbers is very impressive)  just seems counterintuitive.

I'm not expecting Franny to approach Durham's power numbers, I'd just like to see him get the opportunity.

Bad News for Ray and the Gyros
Ray was just starting to put on really good, professional ABs, right on schedule. He was ready for an excellent June and subsequent summer, just like last year.

If he's out for two weeks it will screw up his timing, and when he's plugged back in, he will only bring another dead spot to a lineup barely clinging to life. Look at last year -- it takes Ray about a month to recover from too much rest and relaxation.

Maybe it's complications from being a switch hitter, but Ray starts out of the blocks slow.

Bochy doesn't know this about Ray, and will be hoping the time off will do his second baseman some good. This much rest, though, works against Durham.

Yes, Niekro!
This will be the time he turns it around...I'm sure of it!  If not, definitely the next time.
