Lindenburg, redux

I don't think I've ever been more wrong about a player than I have with Todd Linden. It's time to take care of my Matt Williams late-blooming comparisons with a rag soaked in chloroform, a burlap sack, and the trunk of '72 Dodge Dart. If the Giants' outfield were analogous to the leaky transmission in that Dart, they would have the following tools with which to fix it:

A stack of Post-it notes
A solar-powered calculator missing the "4" key
The Makita Transmission Leak Enlarger 5000.

Dave Roberts is likely to have surgery, which probably means more playing time for someone who isn't going to play well. It isn't as if the Giants would be devastated to lose Roberts, who has been producing like a faster Noah Lowry at the plate, but there just aren't a bunch of appealing options.

It would have been interesting to see Nate Schierholtz get some regular time in Roberts's potential absence, but Schierholtz was just rowanded by a AAA wall. Even if he was able to play immediately, interesting does not equal productive. Schierholtz might be one of those prospects who hits .430 in his first month until the league takes time to figure out his weaknesses, after which he'd hit .230. He could also struggle right out of the gate. It's probably a moot point now, even though Schierholtz wasn't seriously injured.

Fred Lewis does have a sparkly .455 batting average at the major league level, and he's hitting .263/.349/.500 in Fresno - good, but not great for AAA. He could replace the lefty bat lost by Roberts. Todd Linden would get the at-bats against lefty pitching. With Roberts out, maybe Linden becomes the de facto starter. That 22 OPS+ is bound to rise, perhaps even to 23 or 24.

I give up on finding a productive outfielder. I really, really, really wish Todd Linden could have been that productive outfielder, and I really thought he was going to be a productive outfielder. The Giants best course of action is to just wait for Roberts to heal and help with his on-base skills. In the meantime, call up Lewis or, if healthy, Schierholtz, and give either of them the full-time job in Roberts's place. Anything that doesn't involve more Linden is the right move.

I've been a big Todd supporter, but he's just been awful this year and he only seems to be getting worse - both on offense and defense. He's not exactly young and the fact that his big season in AAA came after he'd played there a few years seems to be more of a red flag every day. I'd say just let him play through it, but I've never seen a baseball player (other than Ricky Ledee) play this poorly. He's just brutal. If he gets to 2 strikes at the plate, you can basically assume that he's going to strike out. Every fly ball is an adventure. My patience has kind of worn out.

In 55 AB's he has struck out 23 times and only had 1 XBH hit. That is ugleeee.

If Nate is too banged up I'd like to see Lewis called up to play RF, moving Winn back into center.

Who's the best defensive outfielder out of all our Fresno guys? That's who I would call up. Roberts may not have been hitting, but his defense (yesterday's weird brain fart notwithstanding) has been excellent, and has probably prevented a number of run-scoring shots to Triples Alley. If this team can't hit its way out of a paper bag on occasion, at least being solid defensively is a way to keep us in the 1-0 and 2-1 games.

Timper is regarded as having solid defense. He's never really hit much before this year either, so who knows.

I don't think we have much choice. Winn is also day-to-day.

If Roberts goes on the 15-day, I would tell Linden:

"You are starting every day until he gets back. Succeed or we will DFA you. No pressure".

If we learned nothing else from last year's Niekro/Sweeney/Hillenbrand debacle, we learned that Sweeney is not the answer, unless the question is "Who's our best pinch-hitter?"

I don't see the need to even go with the AAA guys--why not bring one of the AA guys like John Bowker up? He's a leftie and a local boy to boot (Sacramento). Let him have at it. We got nothin' to lose until Roberts gets healthy again.

John has indeed been a pleasant surprise this season -- especially in a pithers' league. But his three walks against 21 strikeouts do not bode well for the majors IMO.

Now if the Giants promote someone to take Davey's place, perhaps it would be prudent to give John a shot at Fresno, where if he last long enough, he might even get to play a game in his hometown Sacramento.

morris may be at his highest value right now but if we get to the playoffs do we want to start a rotation with 1 arm worth of postseason starting pitching experience? I guess it worked for the marlins in 2003, but to me it seems like a big risk to take. I would not mind the trade mentioned by milentrane, but abreu sure has looked listless this year. Then again, given our outfield production outside of barry, a bag of boralex would provide more porduction.
We need an outfielder bad and I just dont see why everyone seems to think Lowry's value is so low. When asked about the potential lowry-cabrera swap Jim Callis seems to think we would be getting jobbed. I agree. to qoute callis, "its much easier to find a melky cabrera than it is to find a noah lowry" agreed. I think sabean may get more for lowry than anyone here believes to be possible. maybe not, but he should i guess.

I wish John Miller would just commentate my life.

Is it just me or do you also have a stinking suspicion that the cactus league pitchers got together and consipired to have a Giant hitter(s) look much better than he really is this year? That would explain Linden and Neikro this year, wouldn't it? Does anyone else have a better explanation?

The Giants have two players who deserve a shot

One is Fred Lewis, and the other is Kevin Frandsen. I am much higher on Frandsen than Lewis - I think Lewis is going to struggle at the plate in MLB in much the same way that Linden did, because he strikes out too much and does not hit for enough power. However, he is hitting for good power this season, does have good speed, and could prove me wrong. Frandsen, though, really needs to get a shot at playing every day in the bigs, and it would be nice if the Giants find a way to make that happen - like moving Durham to right. Unfortunately I don't know if Durham's legs are up to that.

Durham's not going anywhere - especially when he's been playing good defense. Frandsen's going to have to show enough as a utility man to prove he's ready for a starting job in '08.

Lewis has more AAA and MLB experience than Schierholtz at this time. With time Schierholtz should get his opportunity.

Because Schierholtz strikes out so much and (unlike Lewis) never walks. Right now he's Pedro Feliz if he comes to the majors - except he probably wouldn't have as high a BA as Pedro, and he certainly isn't anything like as good a fielder. Schierholtz needs to work on his game, but he may well have a higher ceiling than Lewis.

Lewis is more ready.

Agreed, Sal... the strikeouts are a concern with Lewis. On the plus side, he shouldn't start vs. any lefties for the big club, and he was hitting .313/.410/.597 vs. righties so far this year.

I guess what I was saying (about 5 weeks ago) was that Todd-A-O would hit .280/22/76 . . . for the Isotopes of New Mexico. They'll pick him up.

I should have known better -- I was the same guy who had high hopes for Dustin Mohr.

And anyone who thinks a healthy Dave Roberts is the answer is as delusional as I. June 15 is going to be an important date around here. . .
