OPEN PANIC THREAD

Every Giants fan has been shuffling the same list through his or her mind in the early stages of itsonlysixgamesitis:

  • No offense is this bad.
  • The bullpen could be effective. At least a majority of the relievers have good arms.
  • There have been encouraging signs from Matt Morris and Noah Lowry.
  • Wilson Valdez playing out of his freaking mind means everything in the short-term, but nothing in the long-term. That was just a regrettable fluke.
  • It's only six games, you weenie. Snap out of it. Every team has bad stretches throughout a season.
Fair points, all. But imagine standing outside of an abandoned and dilapidated house. Your buddy is daring you to go in. C'mon, go in. No, you go in first. The debate lasts for ten minutes before you go in through an unlocked door. You walk around for a bit, trying to make noises that will scare your friend. Then you find a dead body in the bathtub with dried blood all over the bathroom ceiling. There are probably several ways to explain how the body got there -- or what the cause of death was -- that aren't inherently freaky. All things being equal though, the most appropriate reaction would be one of extreme terror.

So, yeah, I know only six games have been played out of 162. I get the idea that the season is a marathon and not a sprint. But I didn't have a good feeling entering this season, and the first six games were a corpse in a bathtub. Getting swept by the Dodgers isn't acceptable in a 110-win season, much less the beginning stages of an uncertain season.

I think Zito will be fine.

I'm sure at least two of the relievers will prove themselves to be reliable.

This team is never going to drip liquid power, but they'll hit more home runs than what we've seen.

I would not be surprised if this wretchedness continued.

While I am absolutely not giving up on this season, I would much rather have this team mess themselves out of a race in the first two months of a season than the the unfortunate teases of contention we've seen over the past two seasons. So, we have that going for us. Which isn't nice. Two or three straight wins would go a long way toward diffusing the panic.

Re: OPEN PANIC THREAD
I went to the game on Thursday night, and Matt Morris was pitching, and the Giants won their only game of the season. Therefore it follows that, for the Giants to make the playoffs in 2007, I need to attend the remainder of their games and Matt Morris needs to start every single one.

Oh, and DFA Feliz.

The thing with this is that it's not like they were an awesome team the first few years and they're just in a little funk now. They've been in a funk since Steve Finley hit that Grand Slam in '04.

Re: OPEN PANIC THREAD
I woke up this morning thinking "I bet Grant's post today has the works 'panic thread' in the title." And indeed, it is understandable.

I'm hoping for some rain down here today/this evening, so hopefully they'll pull the tarp and Zito can go out there, do a long-ass belly slide/Henderson, and get the morale up in the dugout. I'm no genius, but looking around at the guys this weekend was not unlike looking at a funeral party.

If we're going to suck, let's suck with some character.  Hotfeet, bubble gum heads, whatever.

Oh, and for the record, I'm predicting a 10-4 stretch here over the next 14 games and some serious optimism. Hey, the Padres can't score either, and they're winning (barely). The roation looked good the first time through other than Zito (and I agree with you, Grant), and for some reason, I think the Bullpen will be OK.

Please, guys, prove me right.

Re: Stat
Wow!  I didn't realize it was that bad.  I DO know, however, that it all started on September 15th, the day the Giants chose not to bring up Tim Lincecum to take the injured Jason Schmidt's place in the rotation.

I'm not even sure that was a poor decision.  But what I AM sure about is that Brian Sabean's comment that the Giants chose not to do so because Tim had made the equivalent of 35 starts (when in fact he had appeared in only 31 GAMES, five of them relief appearances) was at least a little white lie.  The decision was a very safe one for Tim -- but why not just say so?

To cut to the chase, why is it that those "35 equivalent starts" wouldn't have kept Tim from opening San Jose's second round of the Cal League playoffs if they had qualified, but would have kept him from pitching in what one would presume was a far more important major league game with possible playoff implications?

True, Brian, not every decision you make is going to work out.  But can't you be honest with Giants fans?  I would have respected you so much more if you had just said that you didn't bring Tim up because you didn't think it was in his and the Giants best interest.

As I said in another thread...you know something is very very wrong when it's April and the Warriors are closer to a playoff berth than the Giants are.

But I keep it all in perspective. I figure the Giants still have a shot at a 157-5 record. Go G-men! (lalalalaIcan'thearyouIcan'thearyou...)

This season could be one of two things
1. Trade a good pitcher, possibly more for an overated bat.

-or-

2. Keep sucking, but trade away older guys and let Linden, Neikro, Lewis (?), play every day.

If we are going to be this bad, lets do option 2 and watch Bonds piss off everyone in baseball this year.

I'm angry at the ineptitude but I'm not panicking or losing hope. The points raised about the Dodgers are valid. Dropped the series against the team that should win the division. We knew the Giants were not going to be world-beaters.

I'll panic if the losing extends into May and June.

He can still hit the low 90's, the radar at Dodger Stadium pegs Cain at 91-92.  Hence Schmidt's 87-89 MPH change being one of the more effective in the league.
