Open Gameday Thread, 4/8

You don't think obituary writers start working right after they hear an elderly celebrity has passed on, do you? Nope, they spend their time writing easy-to-update templates that wait around on a hard drive until said celebrity kicks. Then the obituary writer plugs in the right age and cause of death, updates the name of the last movie the person made, and runs that baby.

Looking at my calender, I might be busy around July 31st. Connect the dots. I'll just start writing up my "Omar to the (contending team without a shortstop) for (young prospect)"-posts now, check in July to make sure (young prospect) isn't in jail for black market organ trafficking, and run that baby.

Sigh. Please win today, o team of mine.

Why Omar?  We'd lose more than just his glove in that deal.  Just think how quiet the clubhouse would be without his drum playing and LOUD super-stylish Rico Suave designer suits in all colors o' the rainbow!

If you're going to can someone, I say you go after those on the team that lack a personality.  Did you hear me Randy Winn and Pedro Feliz...I'm putting you two officially on notice.

Winn has a full no-trade clause this season, and will still be owed $16.25m for 2008 and 2009 (and has a partial no-trade for those seasons). Basically, we are stuck with him.

Unbelievable.
Truly unbelievable. The man does not even start on the vast majority of big league clubs. He does not even make the roster of the NY Yankees. Yet he got a 4 year no trade contract here. These are things that are reserved for perenniel all-stars and otherwise impact and game disrupting players. Not back benchers

Unbelievable.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/8
Probably -- but not absolutely.  It is possible to buy out no-trade clauses.  If Randy plays well this season, his contract may no longer be an albatross on the trade mart.  Even a buyout of the no-trade clause might be possible.

Nate Schierholtz looks pretty close to being ready to replace Randy in right.

I like this idea! It's kind of like that old SNL skit where Dana Carvey (as Tom Brokaw) has to do all those "death of Gerald Ford" obits in advance.  "Chair-ld FAHHH-rd was eaten by wolves. He was delicious."

One of my favorites.

"One day Gerald Ford dies, you wake up and you like men, and then we're screwed!"

When President Ford passed away, I went to Fark just to see how many wolves references were made in the first hour. About 34,201, in case you were wondering.

Yes.  Yes, I was wondering.  And now I wonder no more. Thank you.

I also noticed that the obit in my local paper just happened to include a quote from Tom Brokaw (not one about being eaten by wolves, though).

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/8
Well, he does only have 16 AB this season.  I suppose if you weren't going to give up on him before the season, or better yet, before he was re-signed, then giving him more than 16 AB makes sense.

Although I would have liked the giving up on him before he was re-signed.

I say we play him every day, until he sucks it up so bad that the skipper has no choice but to keep him out of every lineup.

I have thought the same thing.  Is it wrong for me to root against Feliz, even at the team's expense, just to ensure that he goes away faster?

I think it makes perfect strategic sense, especially because rooting for him actually to be good is hopeless.

Hopeless? Hardly.
"Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut..."

Or something to that effect.

If Pedro were actually living up to his contract he'd be productive , and it would be a given - not a possibility but a probability. Something you don't hope for - something you count on.

We all hope he does it , regardless of how much we carp/whine/bitch/condemn. It's just a question of how much reserve we have to work with individually.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/8
I can't root against the guy. I hate the way he plays, but I wish him no bad. I just wish him gone. He works hard, he's a team guy. He just isn't very good and there is next to no chance that all of a sudden he is going to be able to pick up on breaking balls well enough to decide to swing or not. Matt Williams was able to do it after a long long battle. But it was nip and tuck all the way.

Justin Morneau just hit a HR, and Darrin Jackson, the White Sox color man, just stole Kuip's HR call.  I don't know what to think about that.

Unusually, Hawk Harrelson didn't stop talking for 10 minutes when the HR was hit.  Either it's too early in the season or he didn't expect much with John Danks facing Johan Santana.

My White Sox fan friends, who are otherwise intelligent and educated people, like Hawk Harrelson.  Love him, even.  Sad.  And Cubs fans love Ron Santo on the radio, even though he is basically unlistenable.

Having spent my whole life with the likes of Hank Greenwald, Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper, and Ted Robinson (I have repressed memories of Steve Physioc), I really missed balanced commentary and dry wit.  The level of unabashed homerism and idiocy in other markets, including Chicago, is quite disgraceful.

At least Len Kasper for the Cubs is pretty good, but they got rid of Steve Stone, who was excellent.  Of course, if I lived in Cincinnati or St Louis I would probably have to shoot myself.

Physioc is now with Angels
I find it oh so difficult to listen to him.  A great play by the opposing team gets no love.  A routine pop-up made by the Angels defense goes right alongside Mays' catch in the 1954 World Series.

Re: Physioc is now with Angels
I heard that Jose Mota is getting 50 games this year, so that at least cuts down on Physioc.

Physioc is one of those generic, crap broadcasters who is a hired homer.  Vasgersian for the Padres is the same way, calling every player by his first name.  The whole Braves team is like that.  The Rangers and Astros teams will just put you to sleep.

Washington's team is actually pretty good.

the fans tried....
We were at the game, in the left field bleachers.  Anytime anybody tried to start something they were summarily silenced, and/or removed from the stadium.

A guy in section 140 tried to get a "Dodgers Sux" chant going and Phone Booth officials had him, shall we say, disconnected.....

The ushers and cops were heckled by folks in the bleachers, people were yelling things like "chant nazis" and "speech police" at them, not that that really served any purpose. We saw 3 people [2 Giants fans, 1 dodger fan escorted out- there may have been more]  [ An announcement was made before the game that there was to be no profanity, blah blah blah or else....]

There was some discussion in our section of everybody getting thrown out - one at a time-  but then the Dodgers scored like 256 runs and everyone was rather deflated.

Media Conglomerate Phone Booth Park is just not Candlestick. I think, at the Stick, the club was grateful for the few hardcore fans that would show up, at the booth they want the fans to be grateful for the priviledge of being  allowed into the building!

If the team keeps up with these stellar performances they may have to rethink their policies... Can a  "croix d'crappy roster"
be far behind?

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/8
I had grown up watching NBC's game of the week with Scully and Joe Garagiola, so I was familiar with him, but I had never heard him call a Dodger game.  So in 1995, I went to San Diego when my dad lived there, and he got the LA channel that aired Dodger games.

I watched, and the broadcast was good, except for, you know, the Dodgers, and after a couple innings I realized that there was no color man.  It was just Scully on TV, all by himself, calling the game.

Not once did I miss having a color man.  He was play-by-play and color man in one, and he was excellent.  I have tons of respect for Scully.  He is a treasure, and illiterate, special bus Dodger fans don't deserve him.  Although at least there are real Dodger fans, so I suppose it's better than him working for the Angels.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/8
Kent hit a fly down the right-field line, Winn gave chase but pulled up at the end.  According to Kruk and Kuip and the replay, it was foul, but the ump called it fair.

Bochy came out to argue.  It was mild, but suddenly Bochy turned around and went back to the ump.  It didn't really escalate much.  Bochy returned to the dugout.

Bochy did stick up for Winn, though.
