Bochy gets it!

According to Henry Schulman of the Chronicle, Bruce Bochy has seen the light -- Pedro Feliz is not good:

"Feliz's role: Manager Bruce Bochy did not start Pedro Feliz on Tuesday night, going instead with Ryan Klesko at first base and Rich Aurilia at third, and hinted that the struggling Feliz will lose some playing time that will go to Klesko.

"The players always dictate that," said Bochy, who discussed the situation with Feliz. "Ryan has had some good games and deserves more playing time. At some point, I'll have to rest some of the other guys, too. Petey's a guy who's flexible. I can move him to other positions. As we get deeper into this streak (of 20 games in 20 days), we'll move some other guys around."

In other words, Feliz could become more of a utility player, perhaps starting at first base when Ray Durham needs a day off and Aurilia moves to second."

Hahahaha...I swear to god...it's like I've got a second sense that someone is putting down, or fluffing up either Mando or Feliz.

Wait a damn minute here...there's no way that's possible, even if I'm the one doing it.  The clocks are screwy or something here.

9 seconds to read all of that and post a response.  I mean, I know I'm a minute man, but that's some wicked premature posting.

The Dodgers start a lefty tomorrow and you can bet Pedro will be in the lineup and Klesko will not.  But, against righties this is the right move.

Penis innuendo and bat up the butt-crack jokes about Pedro all in one night... Moggeee is definitely channeling his middle school self today. But considering Feliz's own monumental regression this season, it seems oddly appropriate.

Wow... it's weird having a manager who (still) understands the game. The Giants haven't had one of those since before I became a follower...

Remember that old guy who would pick names out of a hat to make his lineup and would intentionally bone every third game, even though we were losing every other second game (assuming a three game cycle on all of this).

That was fun...

This is way more fun.

Re: Bochy gets it!
I know exactly what you're talking about.  I was having a discussion with jackclark this last weekend, and I don't ever remember Flipper pulling a double switch, and Boch seems to pull this move almost nightly when relieving BB and going to the pen.

I know it's a small thing, but it's f'ing genius in that it keeps us from having to pinch hit for a relief pitcher unless a rally is on.

Re: Bochy gets it!
If memory serves, he pulled one in the fourth one time.

This is where our memories diverge, though, because I remember the double switch being a go to move for Felipe. It's just, he always used it either too early or in a way that failed to prevent the pinch hitter - which would subsequently call out a new opposing pitcher, at which point felipe would deem it necessary to replace the pinch hitter, who was then ineligible for the rest of the game.

Ugh... I agreed with so little of Alou's "strategy," but the disgusting thing was that I couldn't even write it off as him knowing something I don't because they were such painfully bad decisions that an idiot could have explained the wrong to him, and the really disgusting thing was that they were bad decisions that were so predictable other managers used them against us! I can't count how many times felipe got absolutely played into wasting a pinch hitter that way, or similarly wasting a reliever in the opposite situation.

I've disagreed with very few things that Bochy has done. Having Randy Winn try to steal might be the only one.

Re: Bochy gets it!
All three times Randy was thrown out stealing were hit and runs in which the batter failed to make contract and in one case just flat out missed the sign and did not even swing.

Well there you have it. I have disagreed with nothing that Bruce Bochy has done.

And the person who says that a manager's influence on the game is negligible can officially take a sausage dive. I can absolutely see why Bochy had so much success in crappy San Diego.

Well, I was referring specifically to the team, but if you insist: the highways there are in disgustingly bad shape.

And WHY exactly do we have to pay 4 bucks on bridge toll when there are still highway tolls in SoCal as low as $0.50? If the money is going to the whole state, let's get some better contributions from everybody, alright.

Re: Bochy gets it!
I would have to think that another Bochy highlight thus far would be his work on the side with Pedro.  Granted he's still hacking at slop, but at least the skipper is taking a hands on approach with it.  Not only that, but it's a bit self serving...If Pedro can concentrate and hit the ball behind the runners, all is good.  If he doesn't, then Boch can storm up to Rags office and say that he gave it a go and Pete is hopeless.

In spite of Fleas being the target of my ire, it is that management misuses his abilities. You have described the best place and manner for him to succeed. I think that he will actually be more mentally comfortable in that role, and has a chance to contribute as opposed to his current perceived role of detractor.

Re: Bochy gets it!
It's great to see that the collective opinion of the board is coming around to the Bochman.  I think he did a great job of remaining calm, but keeping the team focused during the rough start.

When he was hired, a lot of the emotions ranged from indifference to disgust: http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/story/2006/10/27/3327/0823

I'm proud of the stance I took six months ago and   the Bonds/Bochy relationship appears to be sound as I predicted.  Yay me:

"I like the hire and went on record as saying he was my choice among the candidates.  His experience with the Padres includes managing both contenders and rebuilders and he's always been a guy who's good with the media and fans but doesn't seek the spotlight for himself.

I'm looking forward to having a manager that the team actually likes again.  There's something to be said for Dusty's approach of having a team willing to play hard for their manager.

Bochy seems to be one of the "good guys" in the game, but certainly isn't a pansy.

For those that insist Barry come back, this is probably a nudge in that direction as Bochy is the only guy among the candidates who I could imagine Bonds even having the slightest bit of respect for.

His teams almost always exceed pre-season predictions and the Giants made a good hire.

So there."

18 Games in April. Hope you have back peddling Nike's available just in case. He's playing with fire with Blowmeatiz. Come back and talk to me in September. To this point of the season he reminds of the old race horse: "Okay So Far".  And right now, I am pretty happy. I like being happy. So far, its okay. I'll take 10-8 vs. 8-10 (or its extrapolation) which is where we always seemed to be for the prior 2 seasons.

One thing that was really discouraging in the past, was the inability to put together winning streaks. Seemed it was always 3 out of 4 instead of 4 in a row on those occasions when they played well. Do that 6 times over the course of a season and its 78W/84L instead of 84/78 which was good enough to win a World Series.

"OK so far" is definitely a backpedal from your original take on things!  :-)

Personally, I don't think I'll have to backpedal.  Just as I can't attribute the great starting to Bochy, I have a really tough time seeing Bochy being the cause of problems the time might have.

I'll just continue to go by what the players say and I've heard nothing but praise.

I agree that using Mando is playing with fire, but don't think he's got a lot of options.  Taschner and maybe Hennesey are the only other two bullpen guys who've exceeded my pre-season expectations.

My only quibble so far has been there have been some oportunities to use Niekro more effectively; against LHP, for example.

The part I like best is: "The players always dictate that." In other words: you want playing time? Show me you deserve it.

For contrast, recall Felipe's words when Benitez was stinking up the park last year: "Why should we try to find somebody? It's not going to work. We tried everybody last year."

Surprised that I'm the first to point this out, but who plays 3B in that scenario? I like Shulman, but I'm always amazed that mistakes like that mistakes like that make it into print.

Re: Bochy gets it!
Yeah, I did notice that, but didn't want to ruin an otherwise positive sentiment. Obviously, it would be Klesko (or Niekro or even Sweeney) who would play 1B while Feliz played 3B. And the same scenario would apply when Vizquel needs a day, and Aurilia plays SS. The main point is, Feliz may now finally be put in the one role he deserves -- super utility guy, who only starts vs. LHP, due to injury, or because multiple players have a day off.

Re: Bochy gets it!
Of course, it is a little anti-climactic that the day after this proclamation was made the team faces a LHP, and Feliz will almost undoubtedly start. But I'm not going to let a little thing like Feliz starting ruin the fact that Feliz won't be starting so much anymore.

Feliz has not earned his playing time
Aurilia and Klesko have earned their playing time while Feliz has not. Would not be surprised to see Bochy play the "hot hand" all season long. This humbling experience could be good for both the Giants and Feliz - for the umpteenth time driving home the point of pitch selection and hitting the ball the other way. Somewhere along the season Feliz will return and contribute to this team.
