Community Projection: Barry Bonds

"The remake of Blade Runner -  starring Ben Affleck in the role originally played by Harrison Ford, and Stephen Baldwin as the voice of the lovable animated robot `Popsy' - took home seven Academy Awards."
"The first order of business for President Reubens today was to pardon himself for the indecent exposure charge from 1991. His second act as president was ordering a team of Navy SEALs to storm the basement of the Alamo after receiving an unspecified intelligence tip."
"Even though Barry Bonds missed over 100 games, the Giants were still able to win the NL West in 2007."
That's in order of "most likely" to "least likely." It's an interesting state of affairs when a team is wholly reliant on a 43-year old hitter to have any shot at postseason play. By "interesting", I mean "discouraging." By "discouraging", I mean "familiar."

Yet I'm not really that worried about Bonds. His pants-full-of-wrenches running improved dramatically as the season went on. He showed up to camp in great shape, and he has as much to prove as ever. Mark me down for a huge season...

...if only because this team can't survive without a huge season from Bonds. If there was ever a post to lay on the irrational optimism thick-like, it's this one.  Go crazy, folks. Go crazy.

PS: Grant, I'm encoraged to read that he's up to running with a "pants-full-of-wrenches".  That's quite an upgrade from the "Running like a toddler with a full diaper" you gave him two season ago.

I loved the line that despite Barry Bonds missing 100 games the Giants were still able to win the NL West in 2007, although I was a little worried that it was followed by "as no fewer than 10 key players had career or near-career years, including young standout Todd Linden who batted a startling .500 in Bonds' absence."

Re: more Kool Aid please
Your SLG is impossible for 42 HRs (168 Total Bases) and a .401 AVG in 325 ABs yielding 130 hits (therefore minimum 88 additional Total Bases (130 - 42)).  The lowest SLG Barry could have with these numbers is .788.

But, you are not the only one to give Barry a high average and high homerun rate and then an impossible SLG rate with these numbers.  Many in this tread don't seem to bother to see if their predictions are even mathmaticly possible.

Bonds will hit most of his homers in the first half, but will be forced to play more than was "planned" this spring due to an anemic offense around him and a horrific record when he sits. He will tail off toward the end of the season and will not break the record but will win a batting title. The Giants will re-sign him for $20 million, he will break the record in May of 2008 and promptly retire, saying publicly that the Giants should have signed him to a two-year deal in the 07 offseason and never should have kicked Harvey out of the clubhouse, that they are getting what they deserve. The Giants will sue to recover the remainder of his contract, but MLB will intervene, saying the Giants have no recourse, that they are getting what they deserve for being the sole source of steroids for baseball, football, track and field, cycling and California governors.

Barry's Back
I want to see him put up numbers like those listed above because it'll likely propel the Giants to the NL West crown.  But, just as much, I want to see Bonds put up those numbers to have the baseball world question for a second just how freaking good he is...and to have him smile when all the "steroids" talk comes out and say something to the effect of "you thinking that I'm cheating now?"  Okay, okay, probably not going to happen, I know that.

on the record...
Am I the only one (HERE) not looking forward to 756?  I won't be angry when it happens, but I really won't be that happy about it either (as a milestone.  I'll love it as a couple more Giants runs, we'll need em. And I'm sure i'll go crazy if it happens when i'm at the yard.) I'm mainly dreading the negative attention - much of it undeserved, but a good deal of it legitimate - that it'll bring to the Giants and to us as a fanbase and a city, which are much higher priorities to me, and I'm sure to most people here, than Barry's individual glory.

For me the ideal situation is 20 HR (giving him 754), 75 doubles, a .600 OBP, an NL West title and a Cardinals-style World Series run with our killer rotation (bolstered by the rise of the Enchanter and a July trade of Morris to... Tampa for Scott Kazmir? i can dream) and 7 or 8 BarryBombs per series.  We win it all, Bonds takes the prize he really wants - a title and a WSMVP - goes out like Jordan after #3 and we don't see him again until Cooperstown in 2013.

But, why not, here's what'll actually happen:
