Open Springday Thread, 3/21

Unless anyone has a spare paper about the Iliad laying around, there's no time for a proper post today. As a comment starter, here's a story on Pravda that breaks down the Giants' biggest strengths and their biggest Achilles' heel.

Achilles...Achilles...that name rings a bell. I hate when I can't place a name.

The writer chooses the lack of a second thumper in the lineup. I would have been in 100% agreement before spring training, but about 38% of me defected this past week to worry about the bullpen. Lineup or bullpen? What worries thou?

The Glass is Haft Full
That Chris Haft never wrote an Iliad, but I think he's a Homer for the Dodgers.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
To me the Iliad is the biggest anti-climax in the history of literature. Honestly.

I know that might seem like an unsubstantiable exaggeration, but that's only because it probably is.

Just remember, Achilles is gay for Patroclus.
This world you take to be 'the' world will die, and descend into Hell, and all history after that will belong properly to the history of Hell.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
That's because The Iliad is part of the Epic Cycle, it is not meant to be the beginning or end of the story. Only the story of one year and Achilles struggle with his and Agamemnon's pride (hubris actually) and the cost of that pride to their fellow soldiers. It is a great, great poem if you don't look for the entire history of the Trojan War to to be all laid out for you like a modern novel. Think of it as Achilles' journey through his own personal demons and I think you will find the climax is there and the story well constructed.

Now, if a few Giants players could conquer their hubris and think of the team first rather than their own glory, we might have a game plan for the season. Armando? Did you hear that?

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
Yeah, I ate there when I visited Athens last October.  Yeah, I was pretty sure the Gmen wouldn't make post season play, so went abroad (not with a broad) to drown my sorrows.  Anyway, I had a fantastic, authentic Greek salad at the Iliad.  The thing about 'authentic' is that Greek wine vinegar is made from a rose' wine, and is real subtle and slightly sweet.  It was great, with three types of olives.  Also had the stuffed grape leaves.  Then I walked out into the middle of the teachers strike march on parliament - talk about reminiscent of my undergrad days - except the very civilized Greek police refrained from firing tear gas.
Oh, and I don't see why the Gs need a big bopper to bat 4th.  Yes, the 3 run homer is always nice, but a 2 run double, with a runner on second might provoke a rally just as well.  Especially if the #5 guy is Klesko, batting about 315.  OH, I see what you mean - Kelsko walks, bring up GIDP Feliz.  But I have faith, I think Feliz pokes a single into RF, bring up clutch hitting Molina.  Can I have some more of that Greek red table wine?

I'm not worried about the lineup. I'm only worried about the pitching and that's about half rotation, half bullpen.

Word. I probably worry more about the starting rotation than the bullpen. Zito will be solid, but will he be a true ace? And I'll be holding my breath when every other starter takes the ball for the first time in the regular season.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
Actually, yeah. With the bullpen you can kind of swap relievers out until someone can manage to get it done. SOMEONE is going to be the magic piece each game whether it's Mando or Munterhead or Chulk or what. There are just more pieces of spaghetti (Righetti?) to throw at the wall. With the rotation there's one and a half guys we don't have to worry about -- that's Zito and half of Cain. And that's IT! Alarming.

It's easier to pull a 3.90 reliever ERA out of thin air than a full-time 850 OPS.

What worries me about the 2007 Giants:

Bullpen
Lack of power
Lack of OBP
Noah Lowry
Matt Cain vs. the Giants Sophmore Jinx
Russ Ortiz vs. the Recent History of Russ Ortiz
Matt Morris vs. Matt Morris' Alleged Injuries
Barry Bonds vs. Old Age

This team could win 90 games, or lose 100.

Not a hunch. A predicted outcome based on a continuation of whats gone on in the past. Which is more of the same. Over and over again. Bonds is Bonds. Fleas is Fleas. Durham is Durham. Omar is Omar and so on and so forth. A pitching change here, a utility infield change there, here a pig, there a Mando E I E I O.

Very worried about Noah Lowry's Spring Break in Crapitola as well as the youngsters in the bullpen. If they don't come through, not only is 2007 a lost cause, but you can write off 2008-2010 as well.

I see the giants doing pretty average this year but unlike years past Sabean will concede earlier. This means Feliz, Morris, Benitez, Sweeny(if still around), and Winn all get shopped come the trade deadline.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
why would Sabean concede earlier?  he never concedes. I'd like to believe you're right, is there something anyone has said or done that makes you think this?  If anything I would think Sabes will hold on longer because it might just be Bonds' last chance to win it all.  And we have "strong pitching", which means if we get to the playoffs we'll have a good shot.

Man I hope you're right.  Actually, I hope we're winning a lot, but if we're mediocre again I hope we give up this time instead of pulling a Hillenbrand.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
In an attempt to steer back toward the nominal topic, I strongly vote for THE LINEUP as my chief concern. As was mentioned, we can always find an adequate 11th guy for the pitching staff. And I think the starting rotation will be fine, with perhaps a bump or two along the road.

But we are way too dependant on Bonds' health. I just don't see Ray repeating last year's numbers. I think Linden will hit okay, and with some power. Klesko, I hope, becomes the everyday 1B (against righties) and provides some power. But even in my most optimistic scenario, we need more runs scored.

All spring Gameday seems to be counting every walk as a four-pitch AB, every K three pitches, and every other at-bat as a one-pitch at-bat. Toss in an extra pitch for Cain's passed ball and Podsednik's stolen base, and you get 38 pitches.

And, no, I have no idea what the actual count is.

I'm not worried about the lineup as long as they stay healthy.  They look like a team that should score a lot more runs than last year.  We're better off in CF, C and 1B.  3B too, if Pedro sits a lot.  Alou to Winn is a drop, but balanced by him presumably being available more.

My only concern with the starting pitching is Morris, but what team is really confident in all five of their starters?

This is a little alarming. Come on Wilson. Beach Boys reference here. We want you to show that someone CAN replace Mando.

I haven't forgiven him for whenever that was where Miller started bawling him out for just standing on the base looking down, when he should have run. I don't remember when it was. Miller's reaction was off the chain, one of those you don't know whether to laugh or cry things.

you know what was sad?? You would think the White Sox announcer wouldn't even know who Ellison was, yet he knew he was a crappy outfielder who has made tons of misplays in his short time with the Giants.

So much for Wilson being ready to close!  Benitez is actually the only Giant reliever I have any confidence in what so ever as everyone else just clearly sucks or is just not ready.  It would be beyond dumb to trade Armando!

His adopted daddy is proud as a peacock today, because my boy was nowhere near that disaster!! When Correia blew up the Marlins' scouts were asked to please leave the premises and take their radar guns with them. When Wilson then blew it, Sabean was on the phone with Armando's agent, (me) negotiating a lifetime extension!!

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
Most worried about the bullpen. Flip the thing on it's head.

Give spots to Atchison, Kim, and Cortes.
Stick with Benitez-Kline for late innings.

Last two spots? Sanchez & WHOMEVER.

Could the Giants package Morris, Correia, Hennessey, Sweeney, Ellison, Neikro, Chulk for another bat? Richie Sexson?

If I was the Giants GM:

Zito-Cain-Ortiz-Lowry-Lincecum
Benitez-Kline-Kim-Atchison-Cortes-Sanchez

CF Roberts
SS Vizquel
LF Bonds
1B Sexson
2B Durham
RF Linden
C  Molina
3B Aurilia

BENCH:
OF Winn
OF Klesko
IF Feliz
OF Lewis
IF Frandsen
C Knoedler

That's just how I roll.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
Landfill, yes, but narry one would clear waiver wires, so they have some value, yes? Moreso looking to take advantage of the M's wanting to dump Sexson's contract. It's not going to happen, anyway. It only happens in my rainbows & lollipops fantasy world, where the Giants pursue a first baseman with a bat to protect Barry.

Re: Open Springday Thread, 3/21
They have that and he's a lot cheaper than Sexson, Sexton??  Klesko will get 425 ABs - against RHers, hit about 290, batting 5th, 19-22 HRs, 75 RBIs and play decent D.
