Biggest San Francisco baseball bar argument?

Hello Giants fans,

I was wondering what you all think is the biggest, most passionate argument amongst San Francisco baseball fans. You know, one of those arguments that will never truly be settled and can only be debated in theory. The kind that Giants fans get really riled up over while discussing with friends over pitchers of beer. What San Francisco baseball debate do YOU think trumps all others??

Re: Biggest San Francisco baseball bar argument?
Giants fans argue who was the greatest Giant ever:
  • Most say Willie Mays. They are probably correct.
  • A few say Christie Matthewson. I am one of them.
  • McCovey has a certain place in many fan's hearts.
  • Mel Ott was a freakin' monster- feared hitter
  • Barry L. Bonds- biggest offensive force in history of game.
  • Bill Terry and Juan Marachial weren't too shabby.
  • Heck, a few cling to Will Clark memories.
Giants fans also argue about who should close for this team:
  • Lincecum? I think he could step right in and do it.
  • Correia? Sure, give him a try. Solid 8th inning option as well.
  • Hennessey? He might excel- he sounds bored in current role.
  • Hope to get value out of Benitez during last year of contract?
Giants fans also argue about any proposed Benitez & Sweeney for Sexson trade ideas. A few have suggested this trade, but pubic opinion seems decidedly mixed.

Re: Biggest San Francisco baseball bar argument?
Barry L. Bonds is not only one of the biggest offensive forces in the history of game, but he is also one of the greatest defensive outfielders of all time.  and i realize that old man sid bream beat his throw, but things were against him on that play anyway.  first and foremost, bream was off at the crack of the bat and the play was close at the play. but putting that aside, he made a ton of doubles into singles with his instinct and quickness in the field.  and how many gold gloves does he have?  about a zillion.  i think most people forget how great of a fielder he was.

Re: Biggest San Francisco baseball bar argument?
he didn't make the spectacular plays, like over the shoulder catches or robbing homeruns, but he was solid.  he cut-off balls in the gap as well as the line.  i am not saying he is the best, but at least in the top 10, which in my opinion, classifies him as one of the greatest of all-time.  i would rank ahead of him, and not in any particular order:

willie mays (no-brainer)
andruw jones
i heard mickey mantle was very good (although never got to see)
jim edmonds

of course i am at a disadvantage not being able to see much of anybody before 1980.  just based on clips and other's recaps.

Barry Bonds vs. Willie Mays for Best Giant Ever
That has got to be #1.
  1. What exact decision/moment REALLY lost us the 2002 World Series against an inferior team.
  2. Worst contract ever AS EVALUATED AT THE TIME OF THE SIGNING, not in hindsight (Marvin Benard? Matt Morris? Hamhando Benitez?)
#4 would have been Worst Trade Ever, but I think that one is settled beyond doubt... and I can't mention it because (a) it still pisses me off, (b) it still baffles me, and (c) I adopted someone yesterday and would have to defend him against myself.

Re: Biggest San Francisco baseball bar argument?
Did the Giants lose the 2002 World Series when Dusty spit at the baseball gods by giving Russ Ortiz the game ball before the game was over?

Or

Did one of the Giants biggest strengths in 2002 (F-Rod, Worrell, and Nen to close out the 7th, 8th and 9th) just pick the wrong time for all three have a bad outing?

C) The Baseball Gods were just setting us up for heartbreak. A tease is all Game 6 was. As if to say, that's the closest you'll ever get assholes.

Or it could've been Dusty's over use of Felix and Worrell, as well as Nen's arm hanging by a thread that did us in.

Ortiz deserved better. I'd love to see Russ pitching a gem for us, again, in a WS clincher.

Re: Biggest San Francisco baseball bar argument?
This is one of those "The World Is Divided Into Two Groups, __s and not __s" kind of things, isn't it?  I know there are some people on here who really care about this and get all self-righteous and call it Mays Field and stuff, and it's all harmless, I guess.  But it's still kind of a hipster pose.  Then the other group really doesn't give a crap what they call it, because the noun is the most beautiful ballpark on earth and our team plays there and we get to see it sometimes (love that!)  The money from the naming rights helped build the actual noun. Hipsters can pout all they want, but that's the reality. I would stop short of FoxNewsBillOreillySeanHannity Park, but really, are there people who can't see that the ugly names have HELPED BUILD THE THING?

I don't think someone who dubs himself "Mayor of 311" has any business ragging on hipster poses. Just sayin'.

I like the original name, because if you ignore the commercial connotations, "pacific" and "bell" are both beautiful words. I have no such aesthetic fondness for the generic acronyms that have followed.

Re: que?
In pretty much the same way "Mays Field" is, it seems to me: an insider reference that the "cool" folks will get and the rest scratch their heads over. (In this particular application, one has to stretch the definition of "cool" to refer to a bunch of geeks posting on a baseball blog, but the principle remains the same.)

Sounds like you meant something different by the phrase...?

Re: que?
It's funny. When I picked the name, I thought it was really obvious in the context of a Giants fan site: a guy who sits in Section 311 of the ballpark and is ironically calling himself the mayor of that section.  I have only recently learned that a great many people on this site thought it was a reference to some alleged music group called 311, and that I was claiming to be mayor of THEM (a concept that still makes no sense to me, even if I had ever heard of the group 311). I do think this mixup is funny.

I do sit in View Box 311 (the section below the walkway, with 3 rows in it) a lot, so drop by for a beer. I'm the one not having sex with the wife of his campaign manager.

But beyond that, I think you are analogizing two things that don't belong together. Names on a blog are a forced necessity, and we randomly pick a handle, and it is or isn't obvious or whatever, but it serves its forced purpose.  On the other hand, deliberately MISnaming something that already has a name, especially when one is doing so for his or her own moral/aesthetic/political reasons is something quite different. The "Mays Field" crowd, it seems to me, is just ignoring the $20M in corporate sponsorship that Chase Manhattan required before they would approve the loan for construction (the Giants had to raise X number of seat license sales and $Y million in corp. sponsorships, including naming rights to get the loan).  This is like many things that hipsters (or wannabes) strike poses about in San Francisco-- everything "corporate" is Bad, without a perspective to at least see the benefits that it provides. I'm no corporate apologist, but I do try to look at costs and benefits, and I do try to acknowledge that she who pays the piper gets to call the tune.

Re: que?
For what it's worth, I don't even go to that many Giants games because of time and money and I knew what the handle was talking about almost immediately.

This isn't a kiss ass move. Just playing an honest Devil's Advocate to the "it's a hard reference to get" stance.

Re: que?
My first thought was that it was a phone number, or some slang derived from a phone number, like "What's the 411?" But I did figure it out without having to be told.

I think it's possible to accept the notion of corporate naming rights and still chafe at the ugly names that often result. As I said above, I think Pacific Bell Park was a fine name; its successors haven't been nearly as appealing. Fans are perfectly justified in creating nicknames they like; Giants employees may have to follow policy and use the AT&T name, but the phone company didn't pay me any $10 million, so I'll call the yard whatever I like, thank you very much.

But yeah, if you see "Mays Field" as a purely anti-corporatist gesture, then I get where you're coming from.

I will point out, though, that you (and I) could have chosen to use our real names when we registered here. We didn't - we chose to, as you put it, "deliberately misname something that already has a name" - or, as I would put it, make up a nickname. I don't think my analogy is as stretched as you suggest. I'm not convinced that the motivation behind "Mays Field" is that different from the impetus that gave us "Special Agent Jack Taschner" or "Magellan" or "Dreamy".

You're nobody 'til everybody in

Wow-- well said
I think you nailed it: I view the "Mays Field" thing as an anti-corporatist gesture, hence my characterizing it as a hipster pose.

I still don't see it as a nickname, like our e-handles, but I see your point.

And of course I totally agree with you about some corp. names being better/worse than others. I, too, found Pacific Bell Park to be about as nice as these things get.  I still don't think "Mays Field" is used as a nickname to cover over unlyrical names, though.
