Adopt A Giant

Rxmeister officially adopted Mando in this thread http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/story/2007/3/10/17421/1108#commenttop and it got me thinking.  We should all adopt a Giant.

As adoptive McCer, it's your duty to defend him when he's getting ganged up on here and lead the singing of his praises when he's doing well. You'll surely also catch grief when your player plays like crap. Ideally, you're able to dig up silver linings when things are going bad like his OBP is 20 points higher in night games played in NL Central parks.

Since I'm thinking of it, I get to make up the rules:

  • Only one poster per player; 1st come; 1st served as posted here
  • Minor leaguers can be adopted
  • Your adopted player needs to be added to your signature, so we know who to abuse hwen a player does poorly
  • Manager and coaches can be adopted
  • Since I think it was me who first suggested signing him and I'm a former Padre fan, I'll take Klesko. Rxmeister had Mando.

Since I live in San Luis Obispo County and am therefore treated in the local paper to breathless updates on his career as a former Cal Poly Mustang, I'll adopt Correia. Could be a wussy choice if he continues in the long relief role, but he could be a key late-inning setup man as well. Either way...someone's gotta take him.

    The Nightmare Continues
As their stepfather, I have certain rights under the law. As do they.

In the event of a repeat of the crime waves each has perpertrated from the pitching mound in the past, I plan to exercise those rights.

For instance, they might want to invoke the right to remain silent. But then, I will have the right to kick them in the ass. They will have the right to have an attorney present during questioning, and I will have the right to kick their attorney in the ass too. If they cannot afford one, one will be provided for them, but I get to pick him, he will be on my payroll, and I will kick him in the ass ahead of time just to remind him who's paying the bills. I will then ask them if they understand their rights, and they will nod their noggins like the bobbleheads they are, just like they will when I ask them if they want to waive those rights.

Now it is probably too much to ask for both of these incorrigible disasters to pitch commendably on any sort of consistent basis, but if one of 'em makes it, the Giants should be better off than last year.

What I failed to take into account is that 59 of them are Moggee's comments on EVERYONE's comments.

Of course, all the prime meat was already gobbled up, so I have decided to take a totally different tack, a job so big and occasionally weird that it might not be possible for me to deliver, but that's what makes the challenge so damn fun.

Crap, I keep calling my boy 16 but he's closer to 18. I'm already exhibiting signs of being a bad father.

Or maybe I'm just in denial about him reaching adulthood.

    Not to mention the courage
Gotta say that adopting a minor leaguer OR one of the greats like Lincecum, Cain, Bonds, etc. ain't exactly the height of bravery. Nobody's going to pick on a minor leaguer, for heaven's sake. If your guy makes it to the show this year, we will all be rooting for him and wishing only great things.  The guys who deserve the respect are the ones who have signed on to defend Blownitez or Morris or Pedro Fail-ease. Or their g.m....

Re: Not to mention the courage
I object to your referring to my closer as "Blownitez." Not one single blown save last year was his fault. He did his job. By the way, if Armando is traded and Jorge Julio is acquired in a separate deal to replace him, I request permission to adopt Jorge. He is as close to Armando as anyone can ever get!!

by rxmeister on Mar 15, 2007 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Damn... you might be onto something
If I push the Blownitez thing too hard, then we have to acknowledge that it was foreseeable that he would suck at the time the contract was signed, and then that would necessarily lead to questions about the guy in charge of acquiring players and signing them to contracts... and I can't have that.  You just might be right.
