Open Springday Thread, 3/10 and 3/11

It's been an 0-12 kind of spring for me so far, at least with regard to opening Gameday Threads. But spring numbers mean nothing, remember. You're just supposed to check my mechanics and make sure that I'm pushing the "preview" and "post" buttons correctly. Everything else will come around by April.

Gameday link is here, but the game is also on KNBR. Bonds has homered, the Zito contract still gives me the willies, and Pedro Feliz was just thrown out at home plate by 15 feet. Excelsior!

Edit: Respect Mother Earth. Use a lightly commented Springday thread more than once. Think of the future generations, unable to grow soybeans because the soil is filled with old gameday threads.

Ellison having a rough day with a 1-for-3.  If he makes an out in his next AB that average could dip below .700.

Also BLB is the man.

Can't we trade a vet or two to make room for at least a couple of these guys?  Anybody else rather have Linden in RF with Winn as the rover?  Hell, can't we trade both Sweeney and Winn and go with Bonds, Roberts, Linden, Lewis and Ellison as our OF's?

Re: Ellison, Linden, Lewis and Nate
I like that idea, won't happen, but I still like it.  Didn't Sabes give Winn some kind of limited no-trade clause?

by sfgreg on Mar 10, 2007 4:21 PM PST up reply actions

Re: Ellison, Linden, Lewis and Nate
Yeah. I'd love love love for Winn to be the world's most expensive 4th outfielder, but that's not going to happen. The no-trade clause means he isn't going to a team desperate for a CF, either.

And Lewis and Schierholtz probably win my made-up award of "Two Players Who Absolutely Positively Need More Minor League Time Before Sniffing a Regular Season Giants Uniform." There's promise there, but it isn't going to be found on a major league bench. It probably wouldn't be helped with 400 major league at-bats, either.

Re: Ellison, Linden, Lewis and Nate
Dr. B, Elli's Spring BA is already starting to plummet.
Wouldn't it make more sense to split the ABs between Linden, Roberts, Winn, get Winn's BA up to 305, and trade him in July?  To a contender, thereby assuring he approves the trade?  What would he bring now, after his off year in '06?  Shouldn't we trade Ellison to a team with a Band box park?  That way, he would only have about 25 feet to cover in the OF, thereby covering up his defenseive inadequacies.
Finally, we well into ST, I/m thinking maybe Grant can no longer get around on the hihg hard one.

Re: Batboy
Except that after his first two innings, it was three K's, not three BB's.  Amazingly, Tim has yet to walk a batter in his five innings this preseason.  He has gone to three balls only twice and to two balls only two other times.

But Tim does appear to have done a nice job of improving his control after putting it together at Harwich in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2005.  Tim had walked about six per nine innings during his sophomore season at the University of Washington, cut that by nearly a third in his junior season and then cut it down to just over three last summer in A ball.

In Tim's final 2006 start in the opener of San Jose's Cal League playoffs, he didn't walk a single batter until walking one immediately after his catcher dropped a third strike for what would have been the third out of the seventh inning.

Thus far Tim has thrown only 73 pitches over his five innings of the spring.  That is precisely the number of pitches he threw in five innings in his last regular-season start for San Jose.  That's fewer than 15 pitches per inning, which is highly impressive for a guy averaging over a strikeout per inning.

Re: Batboy

I had the same confusion, initially, but actually it's a formatting problem. The numbers in that makeshift chart don't line up with their proper columns. If you count it out, though, the 3 does land where it should, under K.

Anybody looking to make pretty columns and rows (or any other formatting thing to speak of) should review this diary.

In fact, that diary should probably be cited somewhere in the McWiki for good measure.

Each one of the 15 outs Tim has recorded this spring have come either on his six strikeouts or via the ground ball.  The very best pitchers usually strike out a lot of batters and induce more ground balls than the average hurler.

Me too.  But I don't believe the Mariners are crazy.  I think we should just be happy that they didn't draft the hometown boy last June, instead taking 6-foot-5 Brandon Morrow from Cal.

Tim struck out 199 batters in NCAA play last season.  Brandon struck out 94, facing essentially the same Pac-10 hitters.  The Mariners took Brandon because of his size and because they believe he has even more projection on his fastball.
