New Year's Resolutions

I resolve to enjoy the little things in baseball. Like, oh, a 23-year-old pitcher pitching a fantastic game -- run support be damned. An unexpected call-up making the most of limited time. A 14-run shellacking of a division rival. A doubleheader sweep. Those are the things to appreciate in what is likely to be a losing season.

Conversely, I resolve not to worry about petty things, like winning.

I resolve not to take a fast start too seriously.

I resolve to give Dan Ortmeier a chance.

I resolve to stop spending my life savings on cocaine and seedy massage parlors.

Just kidding. I'm not really going to give Ortmeier a chance. Also, I have no savings. I found a dealer who takes credit cards, and danged if I'm going to let that go.

Your New Year's resolutions -- baseball-related, or otherwise -- if you would.

Re: New Year's Resolutions
"I resolve not to worry about petty things, like winning."

well said, sir.  My New Year's resolution is to care less about baseball.  Watch?  yes.  Learn?  always.  But just careless about the outcomes of the games.  I'm more worried about Chef's Cook finishing higher than 8th in my fantasy league than I am about the Giants losing 81 or 120 games.

Happy New Year!

Re: New Year's Resolutions
Good luck not caring about the outcomes of the games.  I tried that last year.  It was refreshing for a while -- I was able to appreciate the subtle nuances of a baseball game that generally go unnoticed when your teams is wonderful.

After a while though, it gets old.  It's not so much the losing...but the way we lose.  Bullpen collapses, ugly ABs in clutch situations,  Cammie Blackstone, etc.

Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.

Re: the way we lose...
It's special the way these guys lose.  It's like its own skill or trait.  It's an art form.  I'll just make it my resolution to appreciate the artistry being displayed.

Really, it's more like I'm going to bottle up my feelings and just have a good chuckle when Matt Cain's first no-hitter results in a 1-0 loss in the 10th.  It'll be hilarious!

Re: New Year's Resolutions
That happens to be the way all bad teams lose. Bad teams always lose the way you describe. Good teams may win "ugly". Bad teams don't win pretty. They lose the way the Giants have for the last several years. Bad teams are ugly to watch. There is no such thing as an interesting shitty team. Unless it was the 1962 Mets. And only for purposes of ridicule.

Yes but there are interesting players on shitty teams.  They can make the games interesting to watch.

I resolve to give you a pass on this whole business:

"Just kidding. I'm not really going to give Ortmeier a chance. "

I like Danneh. I feel like he's the kid who got picked last for Kickball the whole time, when really he wasn't so bad.

Exactly. Non-specific, like this:

Maybe he writes that on all his checks. Sure would be funny though if you were looking through them...

bought dinner
bought Muffy some pet food
bought some new loafers
bought something
bought cheese...

Now which one could have possibly been for the drugs?

Re: New Year's Resolutions
I am visiting my dad in Michigan this summer. They live outside Detroit. I really want to go to a game at Comerica Park while I am out there.

Other baseball goals for the New Year: work hard on covering the draft for SF Dugout before I go on sabbatical for summer semester. I plan on keeping up with the minor league happenings even if I'm not contributing content to the website, too.

I don't make resolutions. I make goals for the upcoming year. I have a slew of personal goals for 2008 and I'm already making progress on a few of them. For starters I passed my driving permit test on Friday so I am closer to have my California driver's license. Yay!

I resolve to not hate Pedro Feliz. I will hate it when we re-sign him, hate it when he's in the lineup, hate it when he swings at balls in the dirt, hate his sub .300 OBP, hate it when he makes a great play in the field but it doesn't matter because he somehow hit into six double plays in one inning earlier in the game, but I'll assume he's a nice guy who means well and I won't hate him personally.

Well, maybe.

I resolve not to barf when I see that smug little asshat Magowan telling me that Sabean is doing a great job and is going to be extended for another 2 years.

Oh, shit. These are last year's resolutions.

Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

I resolve to become a marketing partner with the Grizzlies so I can take my clients to see more Ray Durham rehab assignments and more of Ortie playing first base.

I resolve to spend more time on the Double Play Ticket Window trying to get club seats WITH a parking pass (they should be a LOT cheaper this year which will over compensate for the 300 bucks in gas I'll spend getting up to the park)

I resolve to not think once about Zito's contract as he gets pounded in the first three innings of every outing.

I resolve to start the first Aaron Rowen Fan Club in Fresno.... Anybody want to join?

Lastly, I resolve to pay more attention to what Kype and Krukow say this year... Obviously they'll be more entertaining than the actual team!!
