Giants sign Rowand

I like the way he plays,I just don't know why we need another center fielder.

DAMNIT!

This is going to be at crazy money for a HTWG  - what is wrong with Sabean?

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

It's like Sabean is one of the computer GM's..
In Baseball Mogul.  They don't care if they have an all-star at a position.  They'll sign another great player if the price is right.

Sabean has 15 bajillion outfielders (that's a conservative estimate), including a few that deserve long periods of exposure this year since we will suck, and he goes out and signs the best player still available whether or not he is right for the team.

Geez, they just gave a 30 year-old a 5-year deal, and say with a straight face that he is a "middle of the order presence".  Are they seriously thinking that he is a 3-4-5 hitter on a team with no other power?

This means that Winn stays in RF, and we do what in LF?  Perhaps the Matsui-for-Sanchez and the "Lowry-for Encarnacion and others" deals go through now?

Sabes has infected Bochy
Bochy's comment:

"I've always admired Aaron from a far, but I got a chance to meet with him and work with him at the All-Star Game this year and was very impressed," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He is the type of player and person who will help bring that 'warrior mentality' we've talked about to the Giants."

SFGiants.com is already doing spin work, pushing that he has done well away from hitter-friendly home parks...

While each of his previous two ballparks have been known as hitters paradises, Rowand has hit at a .289 lifetime clip (380-for-1,316) with 87 doubles, six triples, 37 home runs and 150 RBI in 413 road contests. He has posted a .283 career home average (381-for-1,348) with 221 runs, 79 doubles, six triples, 56 home runs and 197 RBI in 436 combined games at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Park and Citizens Bank Park. In seven contests at AT&T Park, the newest Giant is hitting .286 (8-for-28) with three doubles and five RBI.

They are also trumpeting his defense.

I've always thought Rowand's D was overrated, he's closer to average than an elite fielder.

He was a little better than Bill Hall in CF during '07 by Revised Zone Rating

Re: Giants sign Rowand
The Giants will benefit from not playing Roberts in CF as he was one of the worst in the entire majors last year, but I still think they are overpaying for Rowand who defense aside, I'm going to be skeptical of his ability to hit in our park.

by xanthan on Dec 12, 2007 1:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Giants sign Rowand
they are certainly overpaying, but that seems to be the direction free agency is going in baseball right now.  I haven't seen many deals yet where I didn't think the team was overpaying.  I would have preferred fewer years... but on the other hand, a couple years from now, this could sound like a deal, so you never know.

I'm definitely skeptical of his ability to hit at Mays Field.  He is a righty though, so that should help a bit.  Hopefully he gets a lot of balls into the gaps.

Again, I'm not terribly excited about this, but I don't think it's the end of the world.  I prefer this deal plus Lincecum to Rios alone.  If we can grab Matsui, the offense may move from "the worst of all time" to simply "pretty damn bad."  And with our pitching staff, that may be enough to make the team watchable.

Re: Giants sign Rowand
This is a key point. Rowand was once a great center fielder, but he isn't any more.

UZR has him as outstanding from 2003-05, bad in 2006 (the year he had that spectacular crash into the wall), somewhere in between in 2007.

In Tango's fan scouting report, Phillies fans score him as mediocre.

Maybe he can get back to where he once was, but that seems awfully unlikely for an injury-prone player in his thirties.

by Evan on Dec 12, 2007 1:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

UZR absolutely LOVES him
at least for the 2003-2005 period.

In 2005, (+31) per 150 games, in 2004 (+16) per 150, in 2003 (+46) per 150 in a small sample,

In 2006, however, (-12). This was the year he ran into the wall, so it is possible that this is reflected in not just the offensive numbers, but also the defensive numbers.

In 2007, RZR, converted into runs above average, has him at 5 runs BELOW average.

However, Zone Rating, converted into runs above average, has him at 6 runs ABOVE average.

Basically, he appears to be in a similar class as Torii Hunter, at least for this year: RZR has him as below average, ZR at above average.

Re: Giants sign Rowand
I'm happy I'll get to see Rowand play in a Giants' uni... that's pretty cool.

This deal really only works if we deal some of our other outfielders.  If we now see a package of Lowry (or Sanchez) + Roberts/Winn for a decent 1B or 3B I'll be happy.

Re: Giants sign Rowand (Overreaction)
People are overreacting....

Rowand plays the game the way it should be played, he comes to the ballpark and gives it his all, he will provide a spark and leadership in the clubhouse that this club hasn't seen in years.

This just means the Giants are in line to make more moves since there is a surplus of outfielders.

Rowand will play inspired baseball, something that we as Giants fans could surely appreciate.

Everyone should hold off their criticism and wait until this offseason is over before they start cursing at Sabean and the rest of the Giants orginization.

Re: Giants sign Rowand (Overreaction)
It's not a great move, but I'm not going to go flip out either.  They overpaid, but they had little choice.  If they develop the kids, they will still have money to spend on an actually star and middle of the lineup hitter.  If they get some more bats, Rowand will be a very nice player to have.

Everyone makes alot of good points about why we shouldn't have signed Rowand, but reading this board you would have thought we just brought the second coming of Marvin Benard in here. He instantly becomes the best non-pitcher on the team, and how can you argue about adding a player that's better than anyone else you have?? He was also the best free agent left on the market. And I'm not going to criticize how many outfielders we have until we still have the same amount of outfielders on Opening Day. I'm going to assume the GM does something about it.

It's not that I don't think Rowand is a good player, but if he's not a good enough player to justify signing with actual reasons rather than empty rhetoric it just kind of annoys me.

Well, empty rhetoric annoys me to begin with. There are some merits to the Rowand signing, but I have a hard time seeing him as either particularly necessary, more than just "good," or an honest part of the rebuild.

And I think management has trouble seeing him as any of these things either, because if they did then we wouldn't have to eat crap like "warrior spirit" just minutes after the announcement.

Yeah, just from my gut I have to believe that Lewis isn't on the 25 man roster when the season starts, and I would sincerely hope that one of either Roberts and Winn is dealt with (suddenly Winn is the guy in the way and not Roberts...?). Though I doubt we move either one.

Not a problem.  Schierholtz and Ortmeier will platoon at 1B leaving the Giants with the same 5 outfielders everybody else has.

With no other moves our likely 13 man position player roster would be:

LineUp:

Roberts/Davis LF
Vizquel/Frandsen SS/3B
Winn RF
Rowand CF
Molina C
Durham 2B
Schierholtz/Ortmeier 1B
Frandsen/Vizquel 3B/SS

Bench:

Alfonzo or Rodrguez C
Ortmeier/Schierholtz 1B
Aurilia IF
Davis/Roberts OF
Lewis OF

What is
"inspired baseball"?

by rfloh on Dec 12, 2007 1:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

According to dictionary.com...
Inspired means:
  1. aroused, animated, or imbued with the spirit to do something, by or as if by supernatural or divine influence: an inspired poet.
  2. resulting from such inspiration: an inspired poem; an inspired plan.
  3. inhaled: inspired air.
So he's inspired to PLAY baseball?  It's either that, or he's aroused by baseball.

Man, Sabean got a little creepy on that one.

Re: Giants sign Rowand (Overreaction)
Career Major League Line: .286/.343/.462

At first glance, that seems great. That is, until you consider the following points:

*He's a center fielder in an organization that has about 23 of them.
*He's played in severe hitter's parks his entire career.
*At 30 years of age, he's just past his prime.
*We locked him up until he's 35.
*He's likely making money similar to Fukadome, a player who projects to perform better than Rowand and was signed for a more reasonable four years.
*He's a center fielder.
*He's another low on-base player in an organization that's short on patient players.
*He's likely to hit around his 2006 season playing at Teh Phone Booth.
*He's a center fielder.

We do not need a good guy who is enthusiastic, a leader, and fulfills the requisite "Scrappy White Guy" position. We need someone who can get on base and hit the ball. If he's signed for under $10 million a year, I'll be more OK with it. If it means we now deal Roberts, Lewis, and Davis in some giant fourth-outfielder firesale in return for some young, valuable players, I'll be ecstatic. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Re: Why is being a CF
It's a negative because, well, we already have a center fielder. Several, in fact. The only decent one who hits well, however, is Randy Winn.

As a center fielder, Winn hits well enough. In fact, he hits a bit better than your average center fielder. His defense isn't as bad as some say it is. He's above average, and is probably one of the only spare parts we shouldn't get rid of.

The problem is, with Rowand's acquisition, we push Winn to a corner outfield position. And while his defense becomes better (the Fielding Bible actually shows him to be far and away one of the best defensive corner outfielders), he suddenly becomes an offensive liability. He doesn't hit well enough to be a corner outfielder. Neither does Rowand. We have two guys that hit like center fielders, when for (presumably) less money, we could have had one guy that hits like a center fielder, and one that hits like a corner outfielder.

He could be a good player on the right team - - for the right price and contract length. The problem is, we don't need another guy who plays center field and hits like a center fielder. We already have a guy like that. We need someone who hits like a corner outfielder. If we find one and he only plays center field, then we can move Winn to a corner. Now we have two similar players; one of which hits well for his position and the other does not.

Re: Why is being a CF
I've come to believe that the idea that a player can be an asset in center and a problem in a corner is almost always wrong. Whatever he loses with the bat (in being compared to corner outfielders rather than centerfielders) he makes up with the glove (because he will be a significantly better fielder than most players in a corner).

Which doesn't mean this isn't an inane signing, of course.

What Evan said
Or to put it another way: Carlos Lee is very good offensively. He is also very bad defensively. To the point that his defense nearly entirely cancels out his offense, with the result that he is merely a tick above average on the whole.

No amount of explaining (and there are those who tried) will ever make me understand why a guy who hits .300 can't play any frickin' position he wants if he has the defensive skills the position requires , or why he's labeled inadequate offensively for a frickin' defensive position.

Re: Giants sign Rowand (Overreaction)
The Giants have one, ONE centerfielder other than Rowand. Davis is the only other player who has shown he can play the position, and he hasn't shown he can hit well enough to play every day. Roberts, Winn, Schierholtz, and Lewis are fast players using speed to make up for not being able to play center adequately, and all of them still do so poorly.

From what I read the signing is for 12 million a year - a good salary but not that outrageous. One more year than is what one would want, but that was the price they had to likely pay to get him.

He will most likely not hit as well as he did in Philly, but he is the best bat on the Giants as of today.

Re: Giants sign Rowand (Overreaction)
i agree also. its not a terrible move.  its not a great signing either, but its not horrible. the length is a little concerning, but since eric byrnes re-signed with AZ before the season ended they got the closest thing to him.  i think he could grow into a fan favorit with his toughness and willingness to sacrifice his body in the field.  he's not the most talented guy, but nobody left on the free agent market is.  if they can spin robets or winn with sanchez or lowry for a youngish corner infielder, and thus open up one of spot for nate/lewis to get some ab's its a good move.  who could use a young lefty starter and a veteran outfielder with speed and has a young corner infielder to spare?

We'll get to see some great defense at least. If Rowand cracks an .800 OPS I'd be happy. If we didn't already have 19 CF's I could almost live with it.

With his defense, an OPS of over .800 over the 5-year span could almost make him worthwhile.

Although, Sabes probably gave him 60-65 million at least. I'd have preferred Jones if we had to go into the FA market for an OF.

In any case, I hope we get 5 years of the .300 hitting version, not the .260 hitting version.

So likely this just means Roberts/Davis stays in left and Winn shifts over to right and Schierholtz suddenly has 500 or so fewer major league at bats come October.

Hmmm... while the article seems pretty sure of itself, they get plenty of details wrong about the team and it is yahoo! (the king of accurate reporting)

I'll believe it for now with some relief, but I still refuse to be surprised if it comes out officially that the contract is $80 mil plus.

It's crazy how much thinking one thing and then getting another can make you feel about something.

i.e., thinking we're trading Lincecum for Rios and ending up with Rowand - well, that's not so bad after all!

thinking we're getting Rowand for 5/85 and ending up with him for 5/60 - well, that's not so bad after all!

We can thank the Cubs for this.  Them grabbing Fukudome so quickly and aggressively put Rowand in the Catbird's seat and made him the most attractive OF option.  We can only hope Aaron's passion rubs off on Schierholtz and Lewis.

This is a classic "panic" move...then again, Sabean was going to be damned either way.  Now he better damn well keep Lincecum and Cain and start moving the surplus in the outfield and on the pitching staff for nice bats or this will be all for not.  And if it's for not...put him in some cement shoes in the cove.

Re: Giants sign Rowand
Wait a minute guys. All morning I read how we have to OVERPAY toget anyone because they know this team will suck. And then when they land a Gold Glover for, TOO MUCH MONEY, we all act suprised. The reality is we landed a guy that will play hard, can hit in the 3-4-5 slot, didnt cost us Lincecum, makes Dave Roberts not be our Center Fielder, and makes the Giants more pallatable today than yesterday. And  unless you are writing the checks does it really matter? I remeber when BJ Ryan signed his contract a few years ago. People were appalled. Two years later its a deal. Same with AJ BUrnett. My point is the money is ridiculous. And until all of baseball stops, it is what it is. We landed a good player. We kept Lincecum. I am happy. I live in Chicago and let me tell you, he is fun to watch.

Re: Giants sign Rowand
And  unless you are writing the checks does it really matter?

Yes, it does when it handcuffs the team from making additional moves (i.e. signing an actual impact free agent stick) in the future.

Having said that, $60 million instead of $85 million over 5 years is much more palatable.

Re: Giants sign Rowand
Thats a canard. Giants ownership has billions and billions in net worth. They could spend whatever they want. They could outspend the Yankees if they wanted. Doesn't mean that it would be fiscally prudent. But than again, joining Bushwood Country Club or buying megamillion dollar yachts to anchor in Harbors in the Greek Isles is not exactly fiscally prudent either.

Owning baseball teams, yachts and joining exclusive country clubs is how billionaires flash their roll. Jocks do it in clubs in Escalades, and Lambos. Owners buy countries and own the factories that build Escalades and Lamborghinis.

From ESPN:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Aaron Rowand agreed to a $60 million, five-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, giving the club the starting center fielder it sought this winter.

The 30-year-old Rowand is expected to bat fifth for San Francisco after spending the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies.

"and the kids that most fans here are enthused about are the ones that suffer"

The only ones I give a crap about are Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez (specifically, whether he bring us Matsui).

I'm not particularly optimistic. It's a 50/50 chance that one of these kids has a terrible injury, another 50/50 chance that he has two or three good years and then fizzles completely, and another 50/50 chance that all of them will be as much of an offensive powerhouse as Delino DeShields with all the outfielding prowess of Jose Canseco.

Yeah, they could also all be Miguel Cabreras in center field. The point is, we should be enthused about the kids that give us reason to be enthusiastic, not ones that still have question marks lingering over their heads like they're WoW NPCs.

Question....  If the Giants can back up this deal w/ a deal for Matsui. (say for Sanchez and a throw in)  Then as Grant suggested earlier take a flier on a reclaimation project like Sexson. Would this scenario constitute reason for hope?  I'd say in a best case scenario the offense is mediocre but the pitching stays in tact.  (a good thing)

Re: Giants sign Rowand
Good signing. I'm sure they overpaid, the five years is one more than I'd want and I understand they haven't released any figures - meaning it is probably more than they should have paid per year, but just from his on field contribution he will help the team.

Defensively, the Giants now have a legit starting centerfielder instead of just hoping Davis is going to step up and take the position. Everyone else on this team screams corner outfielder. Actually, an outfield defensive of Roberts in left, Rowand in Center, and Winn in right will be a marked improvement over what they have had for quite sometime. I know Sabean has been trying to upgrade the up the middle defense and this goes a long way towards that goal. Next step, bench Durham and play Frandsen at second.

In the line-up Rowand projects as, unfortunately, the best hitter they have. He is an above average hitter and is acceptable hitting third, but misplaced at clean up or batting fifth. Problem is that with the huge gaping holes in the 4 and 5 spots, he brings only a marginal improvement in a quest to become an average hitting team. If they move Frandsen to third base and still have Durham's bat in the line up this is a major, major problem. A trade for Roland or Inge would help in the short term. The rumored trade of Durham for Sexson looks like a good gamble to me, with this trade as a precursor.

A cautious thumbs up.

Re: Giants sign Rowand
I think Sabean was lucky to get ANY one of the top free agents to sign on to this team..I mean if he had problems getting anyone to bite last season...

That said, if this signing allows him to move some guys for players in areas where we actually NEED help, then fine. Sure, all of those amusement park type fans they have marketed so heavily to may not have recognized the names of the young position players he may or may not bring in..and this certainly adds to the payroll to possibly begin to justify the insane ticket prices to the STHs and everyone else who pays current face value.

Now that all the decent names have fallen off the board, let's see if Sabean has any ability left to swing a good deal or five and keep his nose out of the dumpster. I know...you may say I'm a dreamer...

So right now we have 8 guys that should be seeing time in the OF??:

Rowand
Winn
Roberts
Schierholtz
Davis
Lewis
Ortmier
Velez

and Bowker possibly ready in another season

way to balance it out for the future...man, has Sabean got a lot of work ahead to get some prospects (from here or elsewhere) ABs in this lineup.
