Le Sigh

This is the worst possible NLCS permutation. If the Dodgers and Diamondbacks were playing, there wouldn't be a problem. I'd be the world's biggest Diamondbacks fan for about a week, drink until I forgot that I rooted for the Diamondbacks, and then resume my life.

But the Rockies and Diamondbacks? Yeeeeesh. There's just no way to comfortably root for either of those teams.

The McCovey Chronicles Guide to Picking Sides in the 2007 NLCS

  • The Diamondbacks can't sell out Chase Field. This article contains one of the greatest idiot quotes ever:
If the D-Backs make it to the World Series again, that will be the first time fan Greg Gillman buys a playoff ticket this year. The former season-ticket holder is taking a wait-and-see approach. "When you're talking about investing your money, they didn't really go out and make an investment with this team," Gillman said.
Awesome. Hey, Greg, the Giants invested in their team. Want to trade? I know this jackass isn't indicative of every Diamondbacks fan, but that's still the stupidest fan-quote in recent memory. "How dare they have success without spending money! So I'm not going to the NLCS. Yawn."

    Advantage: Rockies

  • Since the Rockies came into the league, they've done nothing but torment the Giants. And watching games in pre-humidor Coors was torture - sheer torture. Even at the height of the Coors offensive explosion, the grounds crew would cut the grass short so more ground balls would get through. It was arena baseball, and it sucked away over a hundred hours of my life. I could have used that time to do charity work for sick children. Why do the Colorado Rockies hate sick children?

Now that they have the humidor, the games are much more watchable. But it's hard to really trust them. Shenanigans might a been transpirin' this whole time.

    Advantage: Diamondbacks

  • The Diamondbacks have already won a World Series. They don't deserve two.

    Advantage: Rockies

  • If Miami, Phoenix, and Denver all get to have a World Series parade before San Francisco gets to have one, I will punch the next nun I see.

    Advantage: Diamondbacks

  • Randy Johnson is still on the Diamondbacks' roster. It doesn't matter that he's injured: a cheer for the Diamondbacks is a cheer for Randy Johnson.

Matt Herges is on the Rockies. Somehow, Herges made it into the Reliever Who Completely Disintegrated When We Needed Him to Produce, but We Still Like Him Anyways Club. It's a good club. You get 10% off at Kragen Auto Parts for the rest of your life.

    Advantage: Rockies

  • Yorvit Torrealba is on the Rockies. I don't really have a problem with Yorvit - I kind of like the guy, actually - but if he had hit 10 more home runs in 2003, the Giants would have let him start in 2004. The Giants wouldn't have traded A.J. Pierzynski. Joe Nathan would have led the team in saves in 2004, and the Giants would have won 105 games. Francisco Liriano would still be in the organization. Mike Matheny wouldn't have been signed, and the money saved would have been applied to Troy Glaus. Pedro Feliz would have eventually signed with the Dodgers. Bill Mueller would have signed with a different team. The Dodgers wouldn't have sunk their hell-blue talons into Mueller's now-black heart, and he wouldn't be in the Dodgers' front office.

It's all Yorvit's fault for not hitting like a demi-god in 2003. Why does Yorvit hate us?

    Advantage: Not the Giants

Conclusion: Go Indians.

But I absolutely will not care about this series.

For this month I am a drooling, raving Indians fan.

Of course, that means they'll lose game 7 of the World Series in some unimaginably heartbreaking fashion. It will undoubtedly involve Joe Borowski.

To give you an idea of how pathetic NLCS ticket sales have been for the Diamondbacks; I received one of those prerecorded autodialer calls with a message from Eric Byrnes telling me to go buy tickets. That was yesterday afternoon, tickets went on sale last Saturday morning.

Part of me wants to root for the Diamondbacks so I can watch a couple WS games here in Phoneix, but damn that team pisses me off.

I agree with Grant's conclusion: Go Indians

Blah
Go Cleveland... Id glad the NL west get to the show just to shut people up about us being the weakest division in baseball, even if we don't help that cause with our pathetic squad. 4 teams above .500 and it didn't a sniff of recognition from most media.

But since this is already lose-lose for us I might as well throw this out to see what you guys think. When it comes to the A-Rod derby wouldn't it make the most sense for him to go to LA if he decides to leave NY? Less pressure, slides right into 3rd or short, and allows the Dodgers to trade LaRoche or Furcal to fill the gaping hole that Loaiza makes in their rotation. Not only that but with Gonzalez's 7mil, Wolf's 8mil, Hendrickson's 3 mil and the probable trade of Kent's 11 mil thats about 29 mil off the books not even counting the 8 mil they save after odalis perez gets his buyout from KC. If anything shouldn't we be approaching LA with a  LaRoche for Lowry type of deal to take advantage? He has some nice upside and is an opening day starter hands down.

First Time In My Life...
This is the first time in my life that I am openly rooting for the Junior Circuit to whoop ass over the Senior Circuit.  The hatred I have for the American league runs somewhere in between the Dodgers and pedophiles (yes, I hate the Dodgers more than pedophiles).  But at least the Indians are respectable ("Major League", anyone?) and the Red Sox are annoying, but at least they are a part of the grand history of this amazing game.  The Rockies and the Diamondbacks are to baseball history as Canada and St. Kits are to global culutral influence.

im shocked that people are having a prob rooting for the rox

they have a loyal fanbase, young and fun players, and they finally figured out a way to win

cant believe that people still hold a grudge in regards 93...sorry, but 93 was all the giants fault, when they refused to make any deals at the break

cannot root for the snakes....they have no real fanbase and in reality shouldnt even have a team there....the fuckers will not sell out a game for the playoffs

and i want torri to have a ring

and after he wins the ring, i want him to book a flight to sf...go down to sabeans office...and wave that sucker right in his face

in fact, i want herges, hawk and torri to all go to sabeans office and do the titty dance

Rockies, no contest. I've mentioned before my soft spot for the Rox, since I lived in CO the last time they were good (make that "good-ish"). And, for whatever reason, the Snakes are my most hated NL West team (after the Dodgers, of course - I'm not stupid). Maybe it's because their Serious win came in a year when the Giants just missed the playoffs and could have had a good shot at winning.

It should be noted that I'm referring to a universe in which Tim McCarver is a professional boadcaster and Lou Piniella was once a professional broadcaster. Since that universe couldn't possibly exist, it's safe to say that Gwynn doesn't have the chops for this job.

At least not without some work on it.

Re: Le Sigh
Rockies fans need about 35 more years of suffering before they get a championship. Maybe they can come agonizingly close a couple of times, but until the Giants get a ring, they need to be content with their one, soon to be two, "Wild Card Champions" banners.

Let's Go Indians!

Re: Le Sigh
I used to drive around in a little truck with

  "My two favorite baseball teams:
  #1. San Francisco
  #2. Whoever's Playing Arizona!"

in the back window...I'm happily reverting to form.
Good on ya , Montero! Keep that LOB down!

All is said and done , so... Let's rock , Rockies!! (Kiss my bolts , you 'Pitters!)

Re: Le Sigh
That was YOU on the I-10 this morning?

Mine has the Giants and Niners along with:

Az Cardinals: still movin' west. (I hear LA needs a team)

Re: Le Sigh
Grant, you forgot about Livan pitching for the D-backs!  It would kill me to see him win the World Series after he lost the 2002 World Series for us with two stinkers.

But yes, in any case, go Indians!

Re: Le Sigh
It's all Yorvit's fault for not hitting like a demi-god in 2003. Why does Yorvit hate us?
Also, I quite agree, except you didn't go up far enough.  The root cause was Greg Andersen, Balco's #1 salesperson, many years running.  I mean, here he is selling Giants catchers like Bobby Estelella and Benito Santiago, both among the people called to the grand jury, and he doesn't sell Yorvit?

If he would have gotten Yorvit on board, Torrealba would have had a Benard type of peak year and convinced the Giants to go with him, then what Grant said about the chain of events.  So it all really started with Balco and Greg Andersen's negligence in not getting Yorvit on board with the other catchers.

Of course, it would have helped if Benito had put in a good word, but I guess he wanted to keep his job.

Re: Le Sigh
I'll root (albeit not with a lot of conviction) for the Rockies and Indians. AZ and the Red Sox have their (recent) titles, and I won't begrudge the fans in Denver and Cleveland if they win the title. Good for them. Best of luck.

I'm just happy that the Yankees are out and the Dogs never made it in. That's good enough for me this year.

My questions is if Arizona fans aren't watching this series, then who is?
Brian Sabean just hit over the head with a bat and ran away yelling, "HA HA HA, I got an extension! HA HA HA!"

Re: Le Sigh
I'm rooting for a Rockies-Indians World Series that goes 7.  Either one winning is fine with me.

I like these Rockies.  I've been a big Jeff Francis fan since the Moneyball draft, and I like the way Matt Holliday came out of nowhere to become what he is.

Re: Le Sigh
I'm rooting for the Rockies in this series, especially after that deplorable display by their fans last night.

However, being born in Boston, I'm rooting for the Bo Sox overall.  My second choice is the Indians - since their WS win drought is even longer than ours...

Re: Le Sigh
Rooting for the Rockies in this series, but I'm rooting for the AL overall, two teams from the 1800s vs. two teams from the 1990s.  It's not even close.

I just hate it when the new kids on the block (Anaheim, Arizona, Florida, Toronto and now possibly Colorado) win the WS before the SF Giants...

Thank goodness for the Astros and Rangers. At least some of the "new kids" have respect for their elders!

Re: Le Sigh
I'm torn...

I want to root for the Rockies because they are the better team, have WAY better fans, and would be a much better story if they win the World Series.

If the Diamondbacks go on to the World Series, however, there is a chance I will be able to go to one of the games.  Also, Bob Melvin graduated from the same high school as I did )Menlo-Atherton... go Bears!).

Re: Le Sigh
We're all forgetting an important fact here: The Indians have a longer WS drought than the Giants. They win, and the Gmen are second only to the Cubs in years without a ring.

I also find rooting for division rivals abhorrent, but only slightly worse than rooting for the Red Sox.

Therefore, STRIKE, STRIKE, STRIKE!

Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

Re: Le Sigh
I don't think any of us forgot that. I think that's why a lot of us are rooting for the Indians in the first place.
