Yesterday's news...

When big breaking news breaks big for the San Francisco Giants, I'd be remiss if I didn't spend a couple of days on it. It might seem like overkill, but that's one of the reason people seek out blogs; it allows a little more attention to examine each nuance a particular story has to offer. So if you think the same story coming up again and again is tiring, I apologize. But I have a duty.

So, on that note, day one of our seventeen-day coverage on non-roster invitees begins...now.

The MLB site has some good snippets on each player, and here's the full list with links to their career statistics:

Timmy Franchise
Damian Moss
Tyler Walker
Sun Woo Kim
Scott Atchison
David Cortes
Daniel Giese
Justin Hedrick
Carlos Hines
Matt Palmer
Mitch Wylie
Ryan Meaux

Stephen Holm
Todd Jennings
Guillermo Rodriguez
William Bergolla

Julio Cordido
Tomas De La Rosa
Luis Figueroa
Justin Leone
Scott McClain
Ivan Ochoa
Chad Santos

Brian Horwitz
Eddy Martinez-Esteve
Clay Timpner

Minor league free agent with the best chance of making an impact: Ryan Meaux, if only because he's left-handed.

Minor league free agent I will irrationally overrate because of his proven ability to not be Pedro Feliz: Justin Leone.

Minor league free agent who actually has a faint whiff of prospect still about him: William Bergolla, though it'd take a bloodhound to find it. Still, he's a good player to have around if only to make the Jose Vizcainos of the world unnecessary.

Minor league free agents who could actually come out of nowhere and make bullpen bids: Daniel Giese and Mitch Wylie, though the same could have been said about Brandon Villafuerte and Brandon Puffer. I still love the minor league free agent philosophy of Sabean, though. Bring in the bullpen arms and let Darwin pick through them.

Tyler Walker Award winner in the category of Least-Inspiring Return: Damian Moss

Damian Moss Award winner in the category of Well, This Isn't Exactly Inspiring Either: Tyler Walker

Not the greatest haul, but there are always a few interesting names kicking around. Day two will investigate the naughty limericks and anagrams this collection of players has to offer.

Danny Darwin is the new bullpen coach?

I'm going to hold you to this, especially the limericks.

Is that why we still haven't seen a Jose Uribe obit?

Uninspiring
That's about as uninspiring as any list I've seen.  Aside from the obvious excitement over Tim The Enchanter's coming out party, I think the Cortes signing could break right.

Nothing in the FA signings that's more interesting than our own farmhands, Hedrick, Palmer, Eddy M-E, and Horwitz.  Especially want to see Eddy hit against major league pitchers even if it's only ST.

BTW.  Tyler Walker is rehabbing TJ.  Won't be ready to pitch until midseason at earliest.

Re: Yesterday's news...
There once was a pitcher named Moss,
Who'd often be hit with a loss,
We traded a near-hero
For this Australian zero
Now good only for soft toss.

Re: Yesterday's news...
Fun bunch of relievers as always. You can throw David Cortes, Scott Atchison and Carlos Hines into the mix with Giese, Wylie, Meaux and eventually Walker. Apply the Law of Journeyman Middle Relievers and you'll end up with one solid big league season, three passable insurance policies, and three Fresno ERA's over 6.00 this year. Your results may vary. Add a nice little stable of prospect relief arms and we've definitely solved the "quantity" problem... here's hoping that a little bit of quality bubbles out of this mess.

Re: Yesterday's news...
Sabes once drafted a player named Eddy,
"We love the kid's tool," said he.
But son of a bitch,
unless he can pitch,
he'll never be major league ready.

Coming up with a raga man for names is too easy.  Perhaps you could give us a strange bribe to stop, perhaps some green rabbits or a babe stringer.

Tyler Walker and Russ Ortiz in the same bullpen. Can you spell FEAR? --- Armando still MIA. --- Meanwhile, Sweeney to appear on KNBR soon. Q: Mark, did you give Barry the pills or did he just steal them from you? A: What pills?
With Barry back, what could go wrong?

Re: Yesterday's news...
Best shot to make SF opening day roster: David Cortes.  Just had this hunch as soon as I read the initial announcement and looked into his minor/major league stats. That's my gut reaction.

My locial reaction is that lefty-righty match-up machine Bochy wants three lefties out of the pen. Any way Moss is converted to reliever? Probably not. Grant's Ryan Meaux prediction more likely. Also: "Meaux"? Is that the noise cats make in France?

Wrong team for him then:
Though Snof is an excellent talker,
His anagram's right off its rocker.
Kim's not gonna wow us
With his sumo prowess;
For that, we have Mando and Walker.

Re: Yesterday's news...
An invite was given to Sun Woo Kim
Even though Rockies fans used to boo him
But for reasons Sabes knows
He just couldn't close
As it turns out, he's way too slim
I've grown up a lot since before dinner, when we last talked.

Re: Yesterday's news...
I didn't even know that we got Mitch Wylie back. I guess I wasn't on line that day and missed the Wylie press conference at the mlb website. Wylie was actually lost to the Mets in the draft last year and had a really nice year at AAA Norfolk, with a 2.96 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 47 innings. The only knock is that he's 29, but I can see him making it up to the big team and at least making a contribution this year. Of course alot would have to go wrong for that to happen!!

A third baseman, Justin Leone,
Liked to play "My Little Pony"
When I had to chide him,
I didn't want to ride him,
He complained that he was so lonely.
