Dodgers vs. Padres

This weekend the Bums take on the Nuns for a 4 game series. We are currently 3 back from LA and 2.5 back from SD. The question here is who do we root for?

Star-divide

I don't feel a split helps us as much as a sweep... I want to own the wild-card lead or leapfrog over the dodgers by the end of play Monday. Does that mean we have to sweep the Cards, in STL? Yes, yes it does. stranger things have happened. I believe Heather Locklear is dating David Spade, for example.

If there is a sweep it will give us a better understanding of who we are trying to catch and more importantly deal a blow to one of those two teams. Now, which is the lesser of two evils?

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
I admire the optimism in "Split, we catch up games on both." If the Giants win three out of the next four, I'll be thrilled and pretty confident going into the last dozen games of the season.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
I've been wondering this same thing for a few days now and it's killing me trying to decide who to root for.
  • I hate rooting for the Dodgers, but we do have more games remaining against them, so we'd have more control over catching them.
  • Rooting for the Padres makes catching the Dodgers easier, is easier to stomach and the Padres' road schedule seems to set them up for a fall, anyway.
I'm still undecided.  Guess I'll root for a sweep by whoever wins game 1 of the series.

I'll take option 4 please.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
Never, under any circumstances root for the dodgers.  Never ever.  I think that this weekend gives us a great opportunity to focus on the Giants games (it doesn't matter what happens in that series if the Giants don't win) and then on Sunday night look at what happened in the la sd series.  Never root for la, even if they do have to win for the good of the Giants, only bad things can come from a Giants fan rooting for la for any reason.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
We want a split.  For obvious reasons.  In part because we don't want either team to get hot.  If they both play .500 the rest of the year I would be happy.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
I agree, never, ever root for the Bums, to the end of time.

However, I reserve the right to be not care what the result is when a Dodger win helps the Giants get into the playoffs.

That said, Pads win the series 3-1.  No matter what happens, the Giants need to win each series and ideally sweep.  But the Cards will be no push over.  If the Pads win 3 of 4, they are 79-70, LA 78-73.  Even if Giants sweep, they are 77-72, plus Monday's game to play.  We need to keep both teams close enough that neither can pull away from us, so that we can catch up with either or both, for the division title, because the Phillies could make it tough to win the Wild Card.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
OGC nailed it for me. I have trouble rooting for the Dodgers to come out on top of anything, even a single series, but at least one loss by the Pads could make a lot of difference down the road. I'd like the Pads to drop the last game in a wave of errors and bonehead plays so the Dodgers come out on top without really being able to feel they won it.
Heck, that should be the way all four games go.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
Also, they should all go 15 innings and wear out both teams.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
I was thinking more along the lines of a natural disaster that knocks off both teams, much like what happened in the 2002 world series.

Meteor!!
I'm still pulling for the sudden meteor strike.  Or a Tomko-antiTomko reaction that causes a singularity which propels the Padres and Dodgers into a mirror universe.

Re: Meteor!!
Wait...in a mirror universe, the Dodgers would be the good guys! We can't have that.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
Statistically speaking, we should hope that the team closest to the Giants should lose to maximize our statistically speaking chances of statistically making the playoffs. Statistically speaking, a split would still leave two teams ahead of the Giants; if the Padres win the series, two teams remain ahead of the Giants, so statistically speaking, we should root for Hell Ay.

Statistically speaking.

Stats!!! We don't need no stinking stats!!!
what are you guys thinking????   these are the Dodgers we are talking about!!!!!    Padres sweep the bums     Padres in first place.  Giants beat the bums.  Padres AND Giants make playoffs.  Bums go home to momma

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
wilriv has it right.  Pads at least win enough so we can take 2 or of 3 against the awful ones to end the year and get into the playoffs.  Yes, winning the NLW is preferable, but the wild card is better than going home.  And damn, would it be sweet to come from a game back and send to awful ones on their golf vacations in the last series of the year.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
BTW, if things remain on schedule, we throw Cain, Schmidt, Morris at the awful ones, at home, to end the season.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
You positive allfrank? I counted twice and it looks like the final 3 vs. LA are Lowry, Cain, Schmidt, in that order.

Of course, this could be thrown entirely out of whack pending Schmidt's health, Sanchez' next performance in the rotation, and, of course, any other unforeseen circumstances.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
If there is any way to bump la out of the post- season, any way at all, that is what I am rooting for.  It would be so sweet if on 9/30/06 the Giants could have the opportunity to eliminate la at AT&T and Steve Finley was up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and did what he did to us two years ago.  This of course would mean that Finley actually hit the ball which we all know he can't do.

I want to take this opportunity to wonder out loud what he has against the San Francisco organization, its fans and specifically me.  He makes me miserable. I haven't ever filled anyone in on my dislike for Finley on this site.  I have been trying to ignore what he did to me/us two years ago, I figured that I could like Finley now because he rid us of fatgardo.

I got married on that day at that time when he broke all Giants fans hearts.  He ruined my wedding day!  It was all I could do to enjoy the wedding reception, and then the honeymoon.  I had to make a conscious effort to not let my pain show, because my wife doesn't understand the emotional attachment that I have with my team.  Anyways, it has killed me that he did that to us all and then came here and sucked like an ass clown all year.

Wow, it felt good to get that out! Thanks for listening everyone, that was quite therapeutic.

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
I will never know why I agreed to get married on October 2.....I literally still get sick when I think about everything that went on that day.  (I am happily married, it was the game and nothing else that gives me nightmares about that day)  I had people in the church listening to the game (this was pre-slingbox) giving me hand signals during the ceremony and after while taking pictures.  There are actually several pictures that obviously were taken when the bad news was realized, the look on my face is priceless....

Re: Dodgers vs. Padres
Dude,  I got married in February.

I did plan a vacation to Italy for early October in 2002.  We could only go in Sept/Oct, and had to deal with the holidays.  I told my wife we could do it, but I would rather be gone for 2 weeks at the end of the season/beg. playoffs just in case the Giants should happen to go to the Series.

Hell, I even got laid off just before the Series started, found a new job in less than a day, and didn't start until after the Series ended.  Being in the midwest, I needed to stay up late to watch.  Of course, I then had to start a new job I wasn't excited about to begin with after the disaster that were games 6 and 7.

I attended a wedding that evening, although it started about an hour after the Giants and A's seasons were ended in brutal fashion. No Bay Area baseball fans enjoyed that wedding.
