Step away for a few days....

Here's my response to Bangate and Newbiegate, along with some of my philosophies on how I run the site. I felt compelled to write this after reading Irwin's diary, and after the discussion that Josh from Hollywood started.

This site is growing. Mo' posters, mo' problems. The signal-to-noise ratio is starting to become less appealing. Get used to it. I've asked my benevolent Athletics Nation overlord for a Recommended Diaries feature similar to what is over at AN right now. It isn't as easy as copy-and-pasting some code, so it could take a while. Other than that, if you don't like a diary, ignore it. If you don't like a post, ignore it. Every forum in the history of the internet has a self-appointed vanguard of the olden ways. They were all weenies too.

I don't like the curse words the kids use these days on the site. I feel it cheapens my writing, as I make great effort to not swear -- great, great effort, as my sense of humor in the physical world relies on shock value as much as it does anything else -- because when a new person comes to visit the site, the swearing might be the impression taken away from the site. But I don't delete those posts, because it might stifle discussion or give off an authoritarian feel to the site.

One-off political comments will be overlooked. Repeated offenses will get a warning. Politically-charged diaries will be deleted. This is a place to get away from junk like that.

Personal attacks will always be deleted. If the attacker doesn't get the hint, they get the boot. I've deleted confrontational posts from a couple of prolific posters in this spirit. Some of the posters would surprise you. Some wouldn't. But they're all still around because they got the hint. Responding to this with this will get the post yoinked. No question. I wouldn't have banned the poster until the behavior was repeated, though. In this case it was repeated, but there weren't any warning deletions. I don't fault Josh from Hollywood for doing what he did, because I never shared this philosophy with him or the other two posters with "keys to the site". Josh is doing a heck of a job in my place, and I can't thank him enough.

There was a poster, who will obviously not be named, that came on to this site like a coked up ferret. After discovering what the "post new diary" feature could do, he started posting diaries at an obscene rate. It was like a 15th-century person that was shown how to work a Polaroid. The diaries were the equivalent of sixteen blurry pictures of 15th-century toes. I struggled with what to do, as I didn't want the site to get cluttered, but nothing offensive was being posted. I would have sent an e-mail of the posts didn't stop, but they did. The person realized how things went down around here, and is now one of my absolute favorite posters. When he's coherent, at least. But he brings a wicked wit and a different perspective to the site. Had I started deleting his original thoughts, he might have stopped coming around. That would have been a loss.

It may seem as if I write about the halcyon days of alt.sports.baseball.sf-giants as if they were some pure mountain spring of internet Giants discussion. They weren't. There were trolls, there were morons, and there was a self-appointed vanguard of the olden ways. They were weenies back then, as well. My first post to asbsf-g can be read here. It was poorly argued, confrontational, and haughty. It was recognized as such. I eventually learned where I went wrong. But if, in the interest of maintaining some sort of desired signal-to-noise ratio, there were a way for the old-timers to keep out new posters who made bad first impressions, I surely would have been bounced. And I wouldn't have spent my college years on asbsf-g. And I sure as hell wouldn't have started Waiting for Boof a few years later.

The key points to take away:

  1. Don't insult other posters. Even if you've been here since the first day, just don't do it.
  2. Today's newbie is tomorrow's regular. Don't be a weenie.
  3. If you're new, think before you post. Irwin's diary touched on some great points.
  4. I'm a big fan of punctuation and grammar. But I don't think I have a family member who knows how to find the shift key. That doesn't make them bad people with bad ideas. Well, except for Uncle Ron Fascist, but you knew that.
I wouldn't even address this if it I didn't have a raging sunburn on my back that was keeping up in the middle of the night. Here's my plan for the future of this site: I'm going to write a whole bunch of stuff. Some if it will be interesting. Some of it won't. Some of it will be funny. Some of it will try too hard to be funny and fail. Y'all can stick around if you like.

Matthew Arnold wrote Dover Beach on his honeymoon. Course, it wasn't very successful (the honeymoon, not the poem).

Re: Step away for a few days....
This being the internet and all I suppose all of this was inevitable, kinda sad though, it was nice when I could just read everyone's post and get something worthwhile out of it.

Now there are more one-liners, and off base comments on here for my liking, I'm more of a content guy(thank you Steve s., and most of the minor lines regulars), but I suppose if I'm to stay I'll just have to turn my ignore function on, and read the diaries that contain the content I've always enjoyed.

Re: Step away for a few days....
Sorry, off-topic, but that asbsf-g thread was terrifying. It gave me a glimpse of what my posts will look like in the future. Grant, the whiny kid with the poorly constructed arguments, was proved to be 100% correct, and was refuted by "knowledgable vets" who wrote things like...

"1) It's not the Matt (Williams) trade, it's the Snow trade that's REALLY bad.
2) It's not that TRADING Matty was bad, it was trading him for Tavarez, Roa, Kent, and Vizcaino that was bad... actually, I consider the pitchers a plus, but Kent, while an OK player is 29 and not cheap. Viz is WAY overpriced for a replacement level SS. "

I'm already on board as supporting the Benitez signing... I'm sure history has only begun to make my opinions look foolish.

Although it's comforting to know that Giants message board posters have been kicking Vizcaino around for almost a decade now.

Dialogue in Hawaii:
Mrs. McCovey Chronicles: "Grant, aren't you going to join me on the beach to watch the sunset?"
Grant: "In a minute, honey. I'm just posting a nine-paragraph explanation of my feelings about Bangate and Newbiegate."
Mrs. McCovey Chronicles: "Who are Bangate and Newbiegate?"
Grant: [turning to TV showing Giants-Padres game in 10th inning] "YOU'RE BRINGING IN BENITEZ???"
Mrs. McCovey Chronicles: "What?"

The fearless leader returneth
I knew there was something that bothered me about Irwin's original post. It wasn't the content. It occurred to me that it was the timing! Grant just left and suddenly there's all this critique, and he's gone for a week and so can't come back and say, "You're right, thanks for putting that out there" or "Thanks for the thought, but I actually like all the n00bs."  And a lot of dr4m4 can go down in a week. I didn't see the point of posting it when it had been made clear that he was going to be gone.

I am a gigantic weenie
That much I admit.

But I'm not a self-appointed guardian of the old ways. Bill Clinton appointed me in the dying days of his administration. It's a lucrative post, and one I don't intend to give up any time soon.

This post certified to be 100% SFW and swear-free.

On vacation
Went to the game at Petco on Monday, then driving to SF and going on sunday. if they keep winning, i'm not going back to new york.
here's my two sense: scolding for poor grammar -- with rare exceptions -- is lame. it's smug, in many cases elitist, and if you wanted to be a nazi about it you could tear apart 80 percent of the posts on this site. also, where do you draw the line? if you see someone write "your an idiot" do you say something? i'm sure that'd make a lot of people feel clever, i just hope those people aren't on this site. how about if someone posts a well-researched, mostly well-written diary that's littered with danglers? do we take a time out from baseball to give that guy a lesson?

in my opinion, the old golden rule can work wonders sometimes.

How quickly even Grant's Favorites forget.

And wrestling with this heightened sense of grief, I make a clearheaded motion:

Because Grant is out of state, THIS is the perfect time for a coup d'etat.

Victor, I endorse your mission, but if questioned, I will disavow any knowledge.

Go Deep Undercover, and f*** with Colletti and the Dodgers.

Re: Step away for a few days....
I'm tired of this topic but wanted to make two more comments about it:

1.) Irwin, Josh and Grant have all made good points in the last few days. I think Josh has done a great job in Grant's absence.

2.) I enjoy this site now as much as I ever have, and I've been reading since the Boof days.
