A plea to all of the McCoven

Hello all,
I would like to make a few small requests of all the McCoven, myself included. [In no particular order]

1.) Think before you post. Maybe even twice.
2.) If you make an assertion, please try to show facts/data to show why you assert it.
3.) Use punctuation and English grammar. It helps. A lot. I'm serious.
4.) Proofread and preview. [Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa] (but not in gameday threads)
5.) Try to add a new opinion, question, theory, fact, or observation to a conversation. Open a dialog is far more interesting than shouting matches.
6.) Be nice to each other - everybody here is a fan who wants to see the Giants in the World Series.
7.) Try not to complain without offering a reasonable, better idea. [I know, it's tough these days]
8.) Remember that being a fan should be fun. If it isn't, find another diversion. But nobody should expect you to act like an east coast fanboy moron.  I've always thought Giants fans had a better base in reality than most others - and I am proud of it. I feel the ability to be a fan of a player while still recognizing his flaw is a mark of a true fan.
9.) Ignore 1-8 for any of my comments.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I totally agree
with the suggestions, Irwin. I'm finding more and more lately that there are some posters who I just ignore because they rarely have anything thoughtful, funny or otherwise worthwhile to add. Not that I'm Hemingway or anything.

I think El Lefy Malo has done a good job demanding that people offer better evidence to back up their ideas. Kudos to him and the rest of you who make this site so damn addictive.

Liriano seems like a nicer, more talented guy than Pierzynski!

Cream of wheat needs to be fired!

This team is older than old!

I wish Sabean would stop giving away draft picks!

Double plays are less fun than at bats that result in only one out!

If any of the above thoughts encapsulate what you are thinking, there is likely an existing diary under which your thought could be filed.  No need to start a new post.

OK, at the very least...
My diary should have read "Opening a dialog..."

In my case, proofreading isn't pefect.

But Ed, please note the word "try" - I am not attempting to prevent anyone from venting. On the contrary, I wholeheartedly believe it is beneficial - but if all your posts are negative, I think you probably need to re-examine your reason for reading/commenting here. [To be clear: I am not talking about Ed specifically, just the general "you"]

Re: OK, at the very least...
Irwin I totally agree with you on this, and I was actually hoping someone with some respect around here would post something along these lines.

I actually went as far as to email Kenshin and ask him what his thoughts are on all the new people and the endless diary post.

I'm not a "regular" when it comes to posting, but I have been on the site everyday for over a year, and it used to be THE Giants site to go visit IMO, if I wanted intelligent and thought out conversations about the Giants.

Now it seems the usernames are coming out of nowhere and the intelligence pool is being diluted with users who just think it's funny to bitch about the Giants inability to play good baseball.

Now this is an open invitiaton site as far as I know and as long as Grant says you can stay, you're as free as anyone to voice your opinion, but please just keep in mind the things that Irwin has stated above, and realize and respect the users who have been here for most of this sites existence.

I agree, Irwin
I think we need to consider the signal-to-noise ratio here. Venting is all very well in Open Venting Threads or if you open your own diary. But it seems that every part of the site lately has been taken over by whingers, and people who like to comment for the sake of commenting.

I remember - and it wasn't even that long ago - when you could have excellent discussions here about all things Giant-related on a regular basis. You still can, but it's much rarer, because everything gets drowned in a sea of nonsense.

I like to think I follow the above rules, but I'm going to make a big effort to improve. I hope we all do. Personally, I favor some kind of lynching for persistent rulebreakers, but sadly that is just a pipe dream.

This is kind of sad...will there someday be a McCovey Cove Entrance Exam, where if you can't list averages, VORPs, OBPs,.. I'd list more but when they start flying, well MEGO (My Eyes Glaze Over)..or at least yesterday's lineup your access is denied? Seems a little too elitish, but what do I know - I'm just a fan, and how intelligent can I be when I'm a Giants fan at that?

I don't favor elitism, otherwise I wouldn't be allowed to post here.

I also don't want an entrance exam, unless I am the examiner, and allowed to take large cash bribes. Actually, that doesn't sound like to bad an idea...

by Salemicus on Aug 12, 2006 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Serious Business
Victor has unearthed an important truth here. Continuing to be Giant fans through the debacles of many decades, how smart can we be?

And what complicated and ethically upright task are we being asked to perform?

Can we type and keep a politically correct playbook in our heads at the same time?

Hell no. I repeat: We are Giant fans.

by Moggeee on Aug 13, 2006 1:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I would add 2 more thing...
1.
clearly, one can disagree with the style and nature of the Giants current management.  I for one am no great fan of either Sabean or Alou.  However, sometimes I feel the comments here transcend criticism and border on personal attack.

One can say Sabean sucks without having to kick his wife and rape his dog.

2.  The cursing really needs to stop, as in now.  Grant has repeatedly stated that he wished no one would curse.

Benitez blows a 7 run lead in the ninth??? I personally have no problems with a barrage of curse word in a 300 comment gameday thread.  However, front page stuff such as diaries and articles should problably remain a safe haven for the kids like Walrusman.

Re: A plea to all of the McCoven
I can only give you 3, 5, and 8, with a little 6 thrown in for good measure.

But what would this site be without me occassionally saying something stupid without thinking (for reference, I recently made a note about how some people think of Lowry as "a right handed Rueter," when even I knew perfectly well he's left handed)? Oh, I also missed that Animal House reference that one time. You know, the one about the Germans. See what I mean?

But still, 3, 5, 8, and a little 6 out of 9 ain't bad.

Gets a lot quieter now. Kinda thinking it will.

I should apologize for the cussing if Kenshin was serious that Grant wished nobody would curse. I swear a blue streak in almost everything I write on here, it seems. Was he serious or am I just not reading that Internets Sarcasm thing?! Do you need an extra smiley face?

Hey Irwin
As a Newbie here, I will gladly yield to the wishes of the vets. Of course, I would like to have the acceptance of the community.
I am a little confused on this issue.
I am looking at the diary threads, and it seems there are 3-5 a day, which to me would not seem to be overzealous.... But then again I don't have much of a point of reference.
Personally, I think I have posted more than my share of Diaries, but I think I have tried to be 1) informative 2) interesting or 3) amusing. And I think its in my nature to talk too much....
Anyways, I know you can't give examples without potentially offending people, so I will just apologize for any comments or diaries that have offended...
I have the utmost respect for this board and its people, and I am still feeling my way a bit.

Now that we have that cleared up, lets beat those Dodgers.....

Merkin,
I didn't mean to imply that there have been to many diaries or too many posters. In fact, I have like most of the recent diaries. I just wanted to make the point that ALL of us could put a little more thought into our posts, and try to have a better tone. Nobody expects perfection or Shakespeare  - heck, I'd settle for Dan Brown's cruddy writing. Personally, I just think that we were beginning to degenerate into a bit of a whining board.

Hey Irwin,
Thanks for the clarification.
This seems to be the most popular refuge for the thinking Giants Fan, and I'm sure the expecations of yourself and others of the community have a great deal to do with it.
So to that end, I like your appeal to keep the quality of posts high, and if one needs to mudsling or whine there is already plenty of that over on the Official Giants MB.....

Re: A plea to all of the McCoven
Good timing on this. In the first few weeks of the season when the moaning got over the top, I posted asking folks to save some of the angst for late summer when things would be putrid enough to justify it. Well, here we are. But just because the team's plight was so anticipatable and thus all the more maddening, that's no reason not hold ourselves to a high standard of whining.
On that front, I stayed up to 2 p.m. EST listenting to last night's game wreck. The nadir for me was Dreamy getting picked off, which I blame 99 percent on Moises. 3,000 miles away over the radio, you could sense Omar's desperation to get to second before they threw a single pitch to Moises. Omar couldn't bear to be part of another GIDP, bless his soul.

That's funny... that's kinda how I felt about Benitez around the All-Star Break when he was Public Enemy #1 around here despite having an ERA under 2. He soon became putrid enough to justify all the angst.

These days whining may not be particularly useful or insightful, but man is it justified...

Power to The Posters -- No matter their stripe
McCovey Chronicles is changing, and like the sprawling democracy that it is, you can hardly put a lid on the growth.

It's big, it's bad, it may be nearly out of control. But that is what is making it great -- greater than the listless Giants -- every day.

It is a busy marketplace of sports ideas, humor, raw emotion, malapropisms, incomplete thought, and crappy spelling.

I love it.

Re: A plea to all of the McCoven
Good post, Irwin. We can all lament the disappearance of the "good old days" on this site, whatever that means, but I like to think that the appearance of new users posting their comments, whatever their quality (and that's really subjective, anyway), is a reflection on what a great community this is. Grant's writing, word-of-mouth and Kruk and Kuip's strategically placed pimping has increased the site traffic, and ultimately that's a good thing, right?

I'd emphasize "Be Nice To Each Other" as the top request here. I enjoy the back and forth arguments about players and stats -- that's all great, even if the Sabermetrics used remind me how much I sucked at math. I just hate to see the disagreements with other posters turn into personal attacks. We're all fans of the same team, and most of us haven't even met one another in person. We can express our opinions without having to get into flame wars.

Oh, and I'll cut down on the swearing. I just might have to not post when Armando is pitching.

Now, THAT annoys the F-K out of ME. But for some perverse reason it doesn't grate as much when I read it. I suppose that's a reflection on my lack of ethics, morals, and good breeding. I don't know, folks, as long as we're all pulling in the same direction and not throwing things at each other...are we on display at the Louvre? Is Grant's grandmother looking in with obvious disapproval?
Still, I enjoy the wit and wisdom I find here...and so as not to seem a boor I'll do the right thing and attempt to clean up my f-ing language.

4.) Proofread?  See point 3
5.) There are no new opinions to  add.  The Giants suck big green rocks.  And it hasn't changed in a couple of years.
6.) Fuck being nice to each other.  This isn't river dancing with a ball, or tennis or golf or any of those other pansy games.  Baseball, like football, is played by rough men with rough language, as much as the fucking poets and effete's would have you believe otherwise.
7.) Complaining is not to be confused with ripping assholes.  Good rips are interesting to read and add to to the vocabularies of others.
8.) Ripping new assholes is fun cuz its all tongue-in cheek.  I reserve my biggest ass-rips for my closest friends which includes none of you fucking losers, suckbag whinefreaks, or hardball poseurs.
9.) Felipe is still an asshole and an incompetent,  Peter Magowan is still a meddler and Shea Hindenburg is a shitty Franco-German Restaraunt in Ruby Ridge, Montana
