.500, Part 15

Idiotic title, for sure, but yesterday marked the FIFTEENTH (I dare you to count them) time this season that the Giants have been at the five century level.

It's been a theme of this site that this Giants' team does not have the potential to be much else other than a .500 team. And no offense to the Craig Wilsons of the world, but a mid-summer acquisition will unlikely change this.

So other than just continuing to re-state the obvious, here are some ridiculous facts that you don't want to know:

The Giants best record was 8-4 and they have been 4 games over .500 twice this season.  Their worst record was 14-17 and surprisingly, they have been under .500 for only 13 of their 92 games.

Still it adds up to .500.

Re: .500, Part 15
I noticed this morning that the there are only 4 teams in the NL with better than .500 records.  The Giants are tied with the Dodgers for 5th place in the NL (if you ignore the divisions).

Re: .500, Part 15
That is truly eye-popping.  I never would have guessed that.

Guess the best explantion is the dominence of the AL in inter-league.

Re: .500, Part 15
I was going to say something about that, although I think BP's Joe Sheehad commented that the media tended to overblow this.  One could argue that what really happened was that five AL teams got hot and just dominated their interleague series.  Apparently, the other nine AL teams had basically .500 records in interleague play.  The hot teams were the Red Sox, Tigers, White Sox, Twins and Mariners.  It's not surprising that the first three teams would win their series, but the other two teams have been fairly mediocre the rest of the year.

Incidentally the Giants (8-7) were one of only two teams with a winning record in interleague play.  The other was the Rockies, who went 11-4.

Re: .500, Part 15
Does the Giants second best record against the AL mean we have the second best chance to win the World Series? :)

Re: .500, Part 15
Even if there remain only 4 teams above .500 for the rest of the season, those teams will likely achieve better and better records, as they continue to take wins from the bad teams, who give up during the latter part of the season.

Still, the Giants are only 3.5 games out of NL West and 3 behind Cinncinnatti for the WC.  And hey, they can hit .500 for the 16th time with a win today!

My prediction for the rest of the season:
The Giants will hit .500 for the 29th and last time with a week left in the season. That will be the same day they are mathematically eliminated. They will lose all their remaining games and finish 78-84. Management will claim that they only played 6 meaningless games this season, though we will know that really they were all meaningless from the end of July on, if not earlier.

Re: My prediction for the rest of the season:
Luckily, 78-84 will be enough AS I PREDICTED for a 5-way tie for first in the NL west.
