I take objection to the "mild loathing" link to the D-back's -  they're up there with the Braves in NL franchises I loathe (leaving out Lasorda's spawn, which is 7th circle level).

I agree with Grant. I work with a lot of A's fans who give me shit. But it doesn't faze me. Who cares about their team? The Dodgers are worth my time and if there was one Dodger fan in this office, I'd poop on his keyboard. A's fans? Whatever. It's just another three game series we need to win.

After reading FSN...
"Hopefully one that sees the Giants outscore the A's 34 to 2, but a good series nonetheless."

If you wish that the three scores will be as follows...

Giants 34 A's 0
Giants 0 A's 1
Giants 0 A's 1

It's just how it happens.

I take it back, I do blame F.P. Santangelo and Greg Papa.

I'm almost positive I would take two 1-0 losses to get one 34-0 game. That would be the greatest game evar.

Re: After reading FSN...
I think the three games will end like this:

0-0
0-0
0-0

Each game will be decided by penalty kicks. Either that, or a Cream of Wheat eating contest between Feeleep and Macha. If the games were held in Oakland, it would be a Milk of Magnesia drinking contest.

The A's
Besides being geographically close and attendng some A's games when I was a kid, its hard not to like the A's. They've got young, likable players and they're underdogs every year even though they've consistently contended.

It helps that most of the A's fans I'm friends with don't hate the Giants. Once someone starts talking smack it gets the old competitive juices going. This is why I hate the Raiders, because of Raiders fans. I want them to feel miserable.

Athleticos
I like 'em. I have my reasons. The big ones: being a baseball junkie and having easy access to the team; I write A's content for a website (or I did before we had database problems and it shut us down temporarily); and yes, being female and liking boys as I do, it's nice to go to a game and watch the many good-looking men on their roster. Don't hate.

I support both teams but when it comes to the Bay Bridge series, I'm more for the Giants. I've been a Giants fan since I was in utero, I've only followed the A's seriously for about six years. Do the math.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/23
I used to not care about the A's either way until a few years ago.  Then I began to realize that every A's fan I met hated the Giants for no other reason other than Barry and the new stadium.  So using elementary logic I say, if you hate us for no reason, then I will hate you for no reason. Now I hate them for other reasons, their fans getting on Barry for juicing when Giambi, Mcgwire, and Canseco are proven juicers, the foghorn at the coliseum, and the stupid billboard that says "No splash hits, just 4 World Championships" or something like that. And I am jealous of their farm system.

by sfgreg on Jun 23, 2006 3:11 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know if it's for no reason, but...
That's why I hate the A's -- because their fans hate us. I think it's just jealousy, but either way, it's been going on since I was a kid. Everytime the A's achieve any kind of success, the first thing they do is try to rub it in the Giants faces. In 1988, when the A's got off to a great start, I saw a sign at the colliseum which read something like, "A's in 1st -- Humm on this, baby!" In 2000, they had that billboard: "While they built a park, we built a team" (nevermind the Giants ended up with the best record in baseball that year). Now this "No splash hits, just 4 World Championships" billboard. Can you say "inferiority complex"?

You need a reason to hate?!?  That's news to me!

After a game against the A's last year I heard what is possibly the best retort to any A's fan.  It went a little something like this...

Drunken A's Fan-----We beat you !!(gurgle) We beat you !!(burp)  Barry sucks, and we beat you !!(gasp)

Giants Fan #1-----Ya, you beat us...congratulations.  At least our team doesn't have to wear white cleats!

Group of nearby Giants fans overhearing this retort-----Spontaneous, hysterical, giggly, school-girl snickering.

On to more important issues. I can't stand those half and half hats. Sign of a front running fence walker. They remind me of the Simpsons episode where they go to the track and Marge asks if she can bet on all the horses having a good time. Gimme a break. Wuss bets.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/23
In my experience in the (high school) world, A's fans exist purely to taunt Giants fans.

Most of them will shout out the typical A's talking points "hey, how are the steriods treating you?", "how many world series rings do you have?", etc. They refuse to actually talk baseball, because very few of them actually KNOW any baseball. Many of their female fans (such as my friends) are fans because the A's are "hotter." (Okay, they are, but I'll be cursed if that's the reason I rooted for a team.)

Not to get political, but this is the equivalent of luke-warm republicans shouting "FLIP-FLOPPER!" then pointing and laughing whenever you try to debate them.

In other words, As fans are like republicans. Except not as rich.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/23
I grew up a Giants fan and they were always number one, but since the A's were on all of the time and my little league team was the A's for 4 years in a row (mid to late 80's), I really liked them, too. I absolutely loved Dave Kingman, Ricky Henderson, Dwayne Murphy, Mike Davis, and Carney Lansford, Canseco, Dave Stewart, the Cobra. I was always a first baseman in little league, how could I not like McGwire.

In 1989, all of that changed. During the Bay-Bridge series, I was very upset at the way the A's clobbered the Giants and how they caused a huge earthquake. By the time 1990 rolled around, I could care less that the Reds (jeez!) whupped up on them to win the Series. Right now, I could care less, unless one of them is on my fantasy team.

Right now I would love for them to move away (to Portland, or Vegas or somehwere out of state), so that the Giants could have the entire region to themselves.

Fire Flippy.

I don't know about y'all, but I'm muy excited about the throwback game tonight. I came of age in the 80's so I have a weakness for fantastically bad fashion, hairdo's, and music. I'm excited for the loud orange, buttonless jerseys the Giants will be wearing, and the equally loud, buttonless yellow and/or green jerseys the A's will be wearing (both from the 1982 season). Based of pure florescence alone, this should be the best game ever!

Look at Darth Vader swing his lightsaber at Obi-wan in the first movie:  looks just like a Dodger batter swinging at a Jason Schmidt fastball, they think they got him, but got nothing, swing and a miss.  Befuddled look afterward.

Look at Luke in the third movie:  he looks so old, clearly a reference to the Giants current roster.

DeathStar:  obviously a fast ball from a Dodger's pitcher after Barry Bonds connects with it.

Evil Emperor:  he and Lasorda are twins separated at birth.

Count Douku:  he and Ned Colletti are twins separated at birth and Ned will probably meet the same fate, the poor bastard.

Yoda:  he and Felipe are twins separated at birth.  He may be old, but he's spry when he wants to and has a way with words and wisdom.

They could have Tauntaun give away nights, climaxing with the cutting open of your Tauntaun, then you could stuff your Giants jacket with the beast's blubber, and finally you'd sleep on the field in a tent made of your cut up Tauntaun just like Luke did, while watching StarWars movies.

Actually, Luke was in the Tauntaun guts until Han could put the shelter together.  Of course, it is only implied that the shelter would be heated or provide adequate warmth without the Tauntaun, but I like to assume the Tauntaun was only a temporary measure.  I also like to capitalize Tauntaun.

JOn Miller should know better. 6 pitches is a lot of  patience for the Giants. He should ask Pedro Feliz how hard it is not to swing at the first pitch.

You'd be stuck w/ a's announcers...not that exciting of a play.  He broke on first move from the pitcher, who took forever to throw over, Johnson handcuffed a bit and makes a bad throw to second.  Routine.
