AAA: Fresno defeated Tacoma 7-2
(and no one was ejected from the game)

Fresno: LF Fred Lewis: 3 for 5
Fresno: RF Abraham Nunez: 2 for 4, HR, BB, SB
Fresno: DH Adam Shabala: 3 for 5, 2B, GiDP
Fresno: 1B Jed Hansen: 2 for 4, HR, GiDP
Fresno: SS Tomas De La Rosa: 2 for 4, HR
Tacoma: C Guillermo Quiroz: 3 for 4, 2B

Fresno: RHP Matt Kinney: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 0 HR
Fresno: RHP Jeff Miller: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR--1 WP
Fresno: RHP Jeremy Accardo: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
Fresno: RHP Merkin Valdez: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR

Lewis raised his AVG to .345.  A Fresno Bee article about the replacement umpires quoted Adam Shabala about being less patient at the plate over uncertainty about the strike zone.  With his AVG now a .388, that approach seems to be working for him.  Was it a couple summers ago when the Fresno Bee quoted Shabala then about his hitting coach wanting to be more aggressive, less patient at the plate?  Nunez, Handsen and De La Rosa are minor league free agents who went deep today.  They now have a total of 4 homers this season (2 for Hansen).  For Tacoma, Quiroz had a second straight big game.

Kinney had his most effective start of the year, throwing 68 of 104 pitches for strikes and lowering his ERA to 6.75.  A Fresno Bee article today about the replacement umpires implied that Miller's 2.25 ERA is deceptively high because both managers in an earlier game agreed that a home run he allowed should have been ruled a double because of fan interference.  How good of a sign is it that Miller, Accardo and Valdez had a combined 6/1 GO/FO ratio?

AA: Connecticut hosting Trenton was rained out
(no makeup date announced)

A+: San Jose lost to Lake Elsinore 10-7

San Jose: SS Marcus Sanders: 1 for 3, BB, SF, SB
San Jose: LF John Bowker: 3 for 4, HR, 2B, BB
San Jose: RF Brian Horwitz: 1 for 4, 2B, BB, SO
San Jose: C Steve Holm: 2 for 5, 2B, SO
San Jose: CF Joey Dyche: 2 for 5, SB
Lake Elsinore: C Colt Morton: 0 for 2, 3 BB

San Jose: LHP Jesus Reina: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 0 HR--1 E
San Jose: RHP Guillermo Rodriguez: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR--1 HB, 1 WP
San Jose: RHP Thomas King: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 0 HR

Sanders' AVG is now .133.  Bowker now has a .269 AVG and a 5/14 XBH/H ratio.  The HR today was his first this year.  Horwitz's XBH/H ratio is now 5/19, with 1 HR.  With the same number of XBH and HR, is Horwitz the better prospect now?  He is 8 months older than Bowker.  Holm has a .300 AVG in limited playing time as the third string catcher.  Dyche has 4 steals now, while Sanders has 3 steals.

Morton was one of three Lake Elsinore hitters with 3 walks today.  A year ago he had some big games against Salem-Keizer.  The Padres prospect entered today hitting .333/.429/.593.

Reina allowed just a walk, plus a couple other runners reaching via error, in the first two innings.  Then the wheels came off in the 3rd inning.  Based on the numbers which suggest he has extremely little control of the strike zone, I don't understand why G-Rod is pitching.  The final pitcher today in the box score for San Jose today was apparently 25-year-old infielder Marcus Washington, whom I have never heard of before.  King had his worst appearance of the year.  The submariner now has 7 BB and 6 K in 9.0 IP--not very prospect-like.

A-: Augusta lost to Rome 7-6 (10 innings)

Augusta: CF Alex Requena: 2 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB
Augusta: 1B Jose Yens: 3 for 4, 2 BB, SO
Augusta: 2B Anthony Contreras: 3 for 6, 2B
Augusta: SS Kyle Haines: 2 for 4, 2B, SH, E
Augusta: 3B Aaron Hornostaj: 3 for 4, CS

Augusta: RHP Joey Martinez: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR--1 WP
Augusta: RHP Bryan Millikan: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0 HR--1 HB
Augusta: RHP Wayne Foltin: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0 HR

Requena raised his AVG to .368.  At some point does he deserve a shot at a higher level?  Given the Giants depth of minor league outfielders, it seems unlikely at this point.  Yens continues to swing a hot bat.  Contreras was moved up to 6th in the lineup today.  Last June's 9th round pick is hitting .433 now, albeit with just 2 XBH in 30 AB.  Haines and Hornostaj are two organizational infielders drafted after the 30th round who are hitting .367 and .375, respectively, now.

Even with this very poor start for Martinez, his stats on the year are still fairly good with 19 H, 3 BB and 20 K in 22.0 IP with a 3.00 ERA.  This is Millikan's best line of the year.  He's an organizational player with a 5.23 ERA.  It seems like he has been around the organization a long time now (18th rounder in 2002), but he is a couple months younger than Foltin, who allowed his first ER of the year to take the loss in extra innings.

I also thought this morning about coming up with a "Future Forty" list of top prospects.  As of today, here is how I would rank them (with notes on biggest movers):

  1. LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve--began season #3 for BA (behind Cain and Sanders)
  2. SS Marcus Sanders
  3. LHP Jonathan Sanchez--began season #6 for BA
  4. 2B Kevin Frandsen--began season #9 for BA
  5. RHP Merkin Valdez
  6. 1B Travis Ishikawa
  7. RF Nate Schierholtz
  8. LF Fred Lewis
  9. RHP Brian Wilson
  10. RHP Jeremy Accardo
  11. RHP Craig Whitaker
  12. RF Daniel Ortmeier
  13. RHP Daniel Griffin
  14. RHP Scott Munter
  15. 3B Pablo Sandoval
  16. CF Clay Timpner
  17. LHP Jack Taschner
  18. RHP Waldis Joaquin
  19. LF Ben Copeland
  20. RHP Garrett Broshuis--was not among BA's top 30
  21. RHP Alfredo Simon
  22. LHP Pat Misch--began season #29 for BA
  23. LHP Jesus Reina
  24. RHP Shairon Martis
  25. LF John Bowker
  26. LHP Erick Threets--was not among BA's top 30
  27. C Justin Knoedler
  28. RF Brian Horwitz
  29. C Eliezer Alfonzo--also was not among BA's top 30
  30. RHP Kelyn Acosta--moved down because of elbow surgery
  31. RHP Nick Pereira--pre-season BA ranked below other RH relievers below
  32. RHP Ben Cox
  33. RHP Billy Sadler
  34. RHP Justin Hedrick
  35. SS Sharlon Schoop
  36. RHP Brian Anderson
  37. RHP Joe Bateman
  38. RF Mike Mooney
  39. CF Joey Dyche
  40. LF Adam Shabala--maybe too old to be a prospect, but can you ignore a .388 AVG in triple-A?  Perhaps I should have gone with Chris Begg for this spot, who is 1.5 years younger than Shabala.
