Accardo projection....

Jeremy Accardo

IP: 67
ERA: 4.49
K: 59
BB: 29

There's coming out of nowhere, and then there's Jeremy Accardo. He was a shortstop/reliever in college, but had much more experience as a shortstop. As a shortstop prospect he apparently couldn't hold a candle to Joe Nathan because, unlike Nathan, Accardo went undrafted. From undrafted goof to successful major leaguer in about two years, Accardo's success is a little like Queen Latifah moving from '80s rap empress to an actress who could count my parents as fans. It's odd at first, sure, but you eventually get used to it.

The slider slides, the fastball's fast, and it's easy to see why he blitzed through the minors last season. I was at the game where Felipe Alou plugged him in the ninth to get a save - a move as crazy as it was brilliant as it was awful - and he didn't blow the save by getting shelled. He blew the save by giving up a leadoff walk, and then getting blooped to death. His control is still rough, and that's the reason for the borderline pessimistic projection.

I'm bullish on his abilities long term, but I don't expect him to dominate right away. I love the idea of a young, cheap bullpen that would allow the Giants to allocate funds elsewhere for three years. In a perfect world the corps of young relief arms would all develop perfectly, making Armando Benitez and his lumpy salary expendable. There's an outside shot of that happening right away, but it's far more likely the short term will be a mixed bag for the younger members of the bullpen, and especially so for Accardo.

Your projections for Accardo...

Re: Accardo projection....
Is he really going to get that many innings?  Considering Felipe's devotion to Jeff Fassero, Accardo looks like our 8th reliever or so, and either he or Jack Taschner (barring March injuries) is going to at least begin the season in AAA. I'm betting on Taschner making the big club considering he's a lefty and his numbers last year were significantly better than Accardo's (even if his stuff isn't).

Nick's right... he might not get that many innings. The team seems high on Munter (who still scares me), and Felipe would probably like to have Taschner as a third lefty. There's also the slight possibility that one of the losers in the Hennessey/Corriea/Wright battle will end up in the bullpen.

Re: Accardo projection....
I like Accardo more than most people, I think he could be very good this year. Felipe put him in some tough situations last year and although Accardo didn't always succeed, he seemed to handle the situations well and bounce back from bad appearances. That is big for a young reliever.

Re: Accardo projection....
I was impressed with the kid last year. I don't see how he can make the club unless Felipe goes with Sweeney/Feliz as his outfield depth behind Finley. That means both Linden and Ellison are gone or in AAA. A mistake in my opinion, but it might be something Alou would do in order to carry 13 pitchers on the rosters. With a 12 man staff, I think Taschner makes too much sense as the last man over Accardo.

Will we really see a bench of 4 position players? With a team this old, that seems crazy to me, but also the only way - barring injury - that Accardo should be on the team coming out of spring training.

I guess that's a long winded way of saying I'll make my predictions when he makes the club. Right now, I think he's the first pitcher they call out of Fresno.

Re: Accardo projection....
But wright has veteran saavy...

I recall reader a quote that Wright would make the team for sure, either as a SP or RP.

I bet Taschner is the odd man out, as he is the 3rd lefty and isn't a lefty dominator.

Re: Accardo projection....
You might be right about the outcome, but they aren't up for the same roster spot. Accardo's fate rests on who the Giants pick among Accardo, Taschner, and Munter for bullpen middle relief. I guess it's possible Fassero could also be in the mix, but not likely. Wright is competing for the last starting job and if he can't beat out Hennessey and Correia he starts in Fresno.

Re: Accardo projection....
I tend to think that Accardo has a better shot than Munter or Taschner of sticking in the majors.  My perception is that those three fight it out for the last two bullpen spots.

Even if Hennessey and Correia don't win a spot in the rotation, aren't they better served by starting in Fresno?

I think Ellison has a big uphill struggle now to make the roster.  With Winn and Finley both on the roster, why do they need a 3rd CFer, particularly one who hit .232/.286/.313 in 233 AB against RHP last year?

With 12 pitchers, that leaves 5 bench position players: Vizcaino, Sweeney, Finley, Linden and a catcher (Alfonzo, Haad or Knoedler).

Re: Accardo projection....
You might be right about Munter and Taschner, but my thinking is that Taschner gets the nod because he is a lefty and Munter has shown that with his sinker he can get the ground ball when needed.  Either two of them or both could stink up the place in spring and give the spot to Accardo, but if they pitch like last year I think Accardo is the odd man out.

Here is the list as I see it.

SP - Schmidt
SP - Morris
SP - Lowry
SP - Cain
SP - Hennessey or Wright (other goes to Fresno along with Correia)

CL - Benitez
Setup - Walker
Setup - Worrell
Lefty specialist - Kline
Middle reliever - Munter
Middle reliever/spot starter - Fassero
Middle reliever - Taschner
Last spot with 13 pitchers/Fresno with 12 - Accardo

If I'm right that Accardo is the man on the bubble, it depends on if they think they can go with a four man bench and need 8 guys in the bullpen. If I got to choose the guy I'd get rid of is Fassero, but I don't think they signed him to cut him that early.

this will probably happen not soon enough if the giants get anywhere close to sniffing playoff money with el choke in the pen.

Re: Accardo projection....
Benitez, Durham, and Schmidt would be the first to go if Bonds is hurt (or the team's just way out of it). I want the Giants to win, of course, but it's always interesting to see what you could get for players at the deadline. Assuming health for all three, it could be quite a bounty.

Re: Accardo projection....
There were some that were vehemently against trading Eyre and Schmidt mid-season last year, but had they done it, they would be better off now. I just hope the Giants aren't in that positin again this year.

Re: ummmm....
I'd much rather have Contreras + McCarthy + Anderson + $$$ saved, over Schmidt right now. (According to Chicago Tribune at the time)

I don't recall any specific deal on the table for Eyre, but I imagine they could have done better than a draft pick.

Do...
you have a link to an article?  I don't remember that deal.  Regardless, I disagree with your main conceit: that we would be better off without Schmidt.  Also, do you really think a reliever with exactly 1 season of better than average pitching on his resume and in his walk year would fetch more than a grade B-/C+ prospect at a deadline deal?

Re: ummmm....
I have to agree with Kenshin on this one; when healthy Schmidt is an elite starter. One that can go head-to-head with any team's ace and win. Guys like that can be counted on one hand. If we had traded him and Eyre we would have two young prospects and an old pitcher no where near as good as Schmidt. Sounds like a very bad deal, unless the Giants know they can't sign Schmidt after this year or he is too damaged to bounce back.

Re: ummmm....
Schmidt was healthy last year, he said so himself on multiple occasions. He is probably my #1 worry on this year's team given there was no explanation for his loss in velocity. If Schmidt puts up another 4+ era, or spends significant DL time because of groin strains, it would be a big blow to this rotation.

Re: Accardo projection....
I like Accardo too, and Alou definitely liked him, putting him in tough situations, as someone noted, closer-type of situations.  For that reason, I see the Giants putting him down in AAA to concentrate on improving for one more year, also to get one year of closing in AAA, so that he can come up in 2007 and be prepared to do really well, with a view towards him being the closer in 2008, when Benitez' contract is over.  Plus he would be the backup closer in 2007 should Benitez fall over some food or something.

Meanwhile, Munter and Taschner hold down the fort for the team in 2006, with Accardo and Wilson ready to come up as the first line of reserves, depending on who's hotter at the time.  If Munter and Taschner show in 2006 that 2005 was no fluke, then the team will probably rely on them more, particularly with Kline and Fassero going FA after the season, they could be gone, plus Walker is approaching arbitration I would think, so he could be gone depending on how much he asks for.

Re: Accardo projection....
I think Accardo makes the team with Agent Jack going to Fresno, although I like the idea of grooming Accardo to be the closer.

Of all the young guys in the pen (Walker, Accardo, Taschner, Munter), he's the most closer-ish.

In addition to Nathan being an old shortstop, Trevor Hoffman was too.

Lastly, if he's healthy, Munter makes the team.  After hearing Felipe gush last year about his "bowling ball sinker", it's hard to imagine Alou not wanting that option in the pen.

Re: Accardo projection....
13 pitchers? That seems like a lot, although I'm not saying Felipe couldn't manage to use them all every game.  Who will be the 80 game man this year?

Your basic bullpen is a closer, two righties, two lefties, and a mopup guy.  So that's Benitez, Walker and Worrell (side note: everybody's assuming he hasn't aged since he left), Kline and Taschner, and... Munter? Not really a long guy.  Fassero, probably.  Munter had a good year, so you'd think he'd get the nod for a 7 man bullpen.

So unless Worrell doesn't show up with his mind wiped of last season, or there's an injury, I see Accardo starting in Fresno.  Or, maybe Tyler Walker gets traded if everyone else is healthy and pitching well?  That would be a nice world if it brought in someone useful.

Re: Accardo projection....
I never really considered Taschner as an option to start anywhere other than Fresno, but y'all might be right. I can see where he'd squeeze Accardo out if Felipe doesn't see Fassero as a specialist.

I think Accardo makes the team, and gets close to 60 innings. I also think there's a chance Munter is the odd man out, as he's trying to come back from an injury. I'd like the Fassero signing a lot more if he were the one to start in Fresno.

I am in the less then 20 innings pitched and the stats don't matter camp.  I see Accardo as being Fresno's closer for most of the year and only coming up in September unless someone gets hurt.

Re: Accardo projection....
I have changed my mind on Accardo.  He, Munter, and Taschner will all ride the Fresno Express back and forth from San Fran.  I now see 50 Appearances and 25 Innings (Felipe will use him when he has him like a "Righty Specialist".

With his 35 innings Accardo will give up 40 hits and 10 walks for a 1.43 WHIP and a 3.86 ERA.
He will strike out 28 and record 10 Holds with 1 BlownSave(Hold).
