I'm extremely happy with this.

What a roller coaster of a last few days. This is very, very, very, very good news.

I changed horses in the middle of the street because the one I was on had died.
Because San Fran was no longer in the picture I'm supposed to say "That's it , no more leaning for any team this year."
Piss on that. I like to back a team. If my 1st choice can't go the distance then I'll throw it behind the next contender - Mets , Tigers , whoever.
But as long as they're in it , it's SF.

We all knew this was going to happen
I am alright with (1) year and was fearing he would somehow get a 2nd year on any deal with the Giants, who were desperate for a bat.

A lot of people think Bonds got stronger last year as the season went on. It will be interesting to see if he has another bad first half.

excellent.  now if the team can somehow land Burrell or Sexson without giving up too much we will have a team.  Even if it is, once again, old.

Re: Barry's back!
They paid him two million more a year than I expected, but the signing is great news. In a still dubious National League West, any team could possibly compete.

I don't think we will, but signing Barry gives us a chance.

Let's see:

CF Roberts
SS Dreamy
1B Aurilia
LF Bonds
2B Durham
RF Winn
3B Feliz
C Molina
P

There is some decency in that lineup. And a tad bit of potential. Not much, but a tad.

Watching Barry break the record will be sweet as well.

My VORP is higher than your VORP.

Re: Barry's back!
Not to rain on the parade here or anything... but this lineup is 2006  except marginal upgrades with Roberts/Molina cancelling the loss of 370 PAs from Alou.  I don't think Aurilia is a strong bet to out hit Sweeney/Niekro/Hillenbrand, at least not by much.

Now if we could trade, say Armando Benitez for a slugging 1B like Pat Burrell....

Giants 1B Last Year: .257/.307/.410
Aurilia 2002: .257/.305/.413

No point, just very intersting.

by squirrel on Dec 7, 2006 8:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute...
BANNED!

You're right though. This team cannot be expected to score more runs than last year's, which should be obvious since it's essentially the same. Perhaps a little better in CF and C, significantly worse in RF, probably a little better at 1B if Aurilia doesn't regress. Eh.

In summary, if all four of Feliz, Roberts, Winn, and Aurilia are in the lineup most days, this team will stink, barring a return of 2003 Barry. The only solution is to somehow upgrade RF or 1B with a hitter good enough to play those positions. As it stands now, it looks as though the Giants "A" lineup will have players at 1B, RF, and 3B who will be at or near the bottom of MLB rankings in OPS for players at their positions. As this represents three of the four "power" positions, that's not good.

Perhaps I didn't come through quite as doubtful as I meant to. I agree, we really can't have Aurilia, Feliz, and Winn in the lineup everyday.

Seems appropriate to leave the "P" line blank.

Aurilia at 1B - anyone know why we didn't for example trade the Orioles a shiney trinket for Josh Phelps, before the Yankees selected him today in the Rule 5 draft?

Sabean always seems to get great offensive production out of the middle infield, but geez it wouldn't kill us to get something out of 1B one of these years.

Re: Barry's back!
I hate to say this, but you almost have to pay him that much money or else you're insulting him. You can't wave 100 million around at Carlos Lee and Barry Zito and then have the nerve to offer Barry a sub market contract. You can only hope that the extra money it cost them to sign Bonds will not be used as an excuse to scrimp on the rest of the team. There is still major work to be done.

Re: Barry's back!
The Giants had the leverage in this deal especially after Bonds pretty much owes them for the 2005 season which was a bust due to using a doctor outside the Giants organization. Because it is Barry , his ego, his coming up on the record, how people still enjoy coming out to watch him, the Giants paid more then they had to, which was the right thing to do.

Re: Barry's back!
I know that's the value Bonds potentially has but the risks involved, I just don't see how this is a good business deal.  But then the last deal was not a good business deal, there was too many risks to do such a deal guaranteed, we are extremely lucky he was "unique" in baseball history and not like his godfather when Mays was 36.  There are many more players who end up ordinary in their back 30's than who end up like Aaron and Teddyball.  I guess that's partly why they are Hall of Famers.

That said, I'm glad he's back, it's not my money.  This gives us a chance, at least, in 2007, with our rotation.  Now we need to strengthen the bullpen, but what's the math on the remaining payroll now, I count only $4M left of the original $85M that was quoted.  Even if the Maddux money were put into the pot, that is still only $10M, not nearly enough to pursue even a Lilly, let alone a Zito.  Plus we still need a LOOGY (unless we go with Taschner, Misch, or Threets, if he's recovered) and, really, another closer because hopefully we can unload Benitez onto another team for something.

The only way we can really spend a lot more is if the Giants take all their profits over the past 3-5 years and spend that too.  Plus, remember, all the extra draft picks this year, that will be around $10M, maybe more with the Dodgers picks now, getting hard to remember the picks we get with so many.

Or as someone above noted, he defers some of the money.  However, don't know how the new CBA, which, by the way, was approved by the players association today, works, but in the just past CBA, you cannot really defer that much money into the future, not like the deals Griffey, A-Rod, and Barry got.

Basically I think a team is limited to a max of $2M that can actually be deferred indefinitely to the payment date, with anything above that being held in an account specifically for that deferment, so that if a team should happen to go under (I don't think it has ever happened, not in the modern era at least), his deferment is protected and he won't lose all of it.  So we only get to save $2M this way, though there is some fancy stuff that happens with the dating, so you might be able to push some of it to next year, before you have to set up that account.  But I don't have time to read the CBA to confirm.

Plus now we have $16M more to spend in 2007 for free agents like, perhaps, Vernon Wells, Andruw Jones, or Adam Dunn, to name three.

Now sign the big boy....

Re: Barry's back!
$21 million for Bonds & Feliz? Plus performance bonuses? If Sabean would have waited a spell, that number would have come down to $15m, which would have left some dough to address the terrible bullpen situation...

If the Giants land a 1B, shifting Rich Aurilia to 3B and Feliz to the bench, the line-up has hope.

If the Giants sign Zito, the rotation has hope.

If the Giants sign 2-3 new bullpen arms that work out, the relief corps have hope.

Don't see how the Giants have the $$$ to make this happen- maybe Benitez & Fransden for Sexton + $5m? Then Zito to an absurd back-loaded contract... the pen would still be in shambles...

Very happy Barry is back, but Sabean just got taken to the cleaners. Best line of this robust thread:

Re: Barry's back!
OBVIOUS: It's important to have Barry.

REAL OBVIOUS: It's V E R Y important to have Barry happy.

See Friday's Wall Street Journal (Weekend Section) for determining free agent value.

Don't worry, nothing will be allright.

Re: Barry's back!
Bonds' Contracts - Guaranteeing Mediocrity Since 2004.  Other teams improve, the Giants tread water, hoping to God Bonds can squeeze out 400 ABs and get his crap record.  These last couple contracts of his are really killing this organization.

Re: Barry's back!
Yeah, they should have spent the 16M on Pierre and Luis Gonzales.

Re: Barry's back!
And why is that?  Bonds has absolutely earned his contracts.  I posted before that Bonds earned his last contract even though he missed all of 2005.  Bonds gets a ton of money, but he produces tons of runs.  It's the other stupid contracts that have kept the Giants from being good.

Bonds will make $16 million this year.  The total payroll will be around $85 million.  So which do you think keeps the team from being championship caliber - the $16 million for Bonds, or the other ill-spent $70 million?

Saying that the Giants can't compete because Bonds get paid so much is total BS.  Paying Bonds has kept the Giants from signing whom?  Juan Pierre?  Sarge Lite?  Did I miss the time they drafted and developed Albert Pujols but had to let him go because of Bonds's contract?  Because I don't remember that happening.

Seriously.  If you don't like Bonds, then just say so.  But don't disguise your contempt in a half-assed ridiculous statement devoid of anything resembling analysis.

Easy on the guy, he seems a bit baked to begin with.

Re: Barry's back!
Bonds is an asshole and makes the Giants somewhat of a laughingstock, but that is purely beside the point.  This is purely payroll related.  This team needed to start working on a new plan 3 years ago.  Resources need to be refocused towards a new generation of players.

I understand you can't just go get these players, and this year was an especially bad year to retool.  And I do realize Bonds is still strong at the plate.  But rebuilding is rebuilding and putting 20+ million in he and Feliz just to put  a half-assed team out there is shortsighted.  Spend that money on the next four bigtime 16 year olds to come out of the Dominican.  Save it and add it to next years payroll to get one of the real prizes (they'll probably miss out on).

I'm just not interested in year 3 of Brokedown Barry and the Goofs.  This team is screaming 3rd place and no future yet again.

Re: Barry's back!
What would you consider the bigger problem, $16M to Barry or the respective contracts of Feliz, Winn, Morris, and Benitez?  I don't see how the money going to our best player is holding the team back.

Re: Barry's back!
Benitez's contract is a huge problem. Feliz's is probably going to be waste of money, but with his BA=OBP style of hitting as long as he gets rest he could very well put up a .270 line and only be almost completely worthless. His defense and versatility make up for it a little, but still too much money. We could have gotten a much better contract on Winn, though I don't really mind the one we have. And Morris's contract is probably about right, the more I think about it.

There is a lot of wasted cash on this team on guys who don't deserve it. Like you seem to be implying, Barry deserves it.

Re: Barry's back!
Barry may not cost as much as it seems. Once he gets the record in the friendly (well, at least he isn't universally hated here)confines of the Phone, there's no reason for him to hang around unless the Giants are in the pennant race. If were sucking as so many of us fear/expect, maybe he agrees to a trade late in the year to a contender, netting us a prospect and partial payment of his salary.

Re: Barry's back!
Good luck getting any team to take on the Barry Bonds Show and all that it entails (including, but not limited to the millions left on his contract).

Re: Barry's back!
This was not offered as a likely scenario. But if Barry is holding up reasonably well and gets the record by August without creating a public relations fiasco, it's something that might mesh with both the Giants' interests and Barry's. Once the craziness of the record chase is past, a team missing that one big bat might be willing to take him for the last month, particularly if crucial players on the team indicate they would welcome him. There's a lot of players who despise Bonds but he also seems to have plenty of admirers among his peers.
