Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?

What would Noah Lowry bring back in trade?

The contract particulars:

Signed through '09. Owed $1.115M in '07, $2.25M in '08, $4.5M in '09 with a club option of $6.25M in '10.

Career details:

'04 - age 23 - ERA+ 116 - ERA 3.82 - K/9 7.04
'05 - age 24 - ERA+ 110 - ERA 3.78 - K/9 7.56
'06 - age 25 - ERA+ 95 - ERA 4.74 - K/9 4.74

Fun fact: One of his Baseball Reference comparables is Les Cain. I think we already knew that....

Reason for the hypothetical gymnastics: If the Giants are absolutely committed to bringing in a Famous Player for Big Money, they could conceivably sign Barry Zito for way too much and trade Lowry to fill lineup holes. If the organization was willing to shell out $110M for Carlos Lee, it wouldn't be a completely crazy scenario. It wouldn't be a smart or likely move, but the offseason is all about pulling filthy hypotheticals from unspeakable places.

There are two ways to look at Lowry: a. Promising young pitcher locked up for three to four years, or b. Oft-injured soft-tosser who might not get back the strikeouts he lost last season. Mark me down as an "a."-man, but what if Lowry could bring back a package like Adam Eaton did last year (Adrian Gonzalez and part of Chris Young)? Assuming the Giants re-signed Bonds, it isn't inconceivable Lowry could bring 1/4th of a starting lineup back from another organization. If Woody Williams is worth 2/12, Lowry has to be one of the better bargains in baseball. Even in his down year, Lowry was still a league-average starter.

I don't want to trade him -- he's one of my favorite players to watch when the change and curve are working -- and I realize as homers we'll completely overvalue him. Still, it's worth wondering about. So who would want him, and what could we get?

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
Trading Lowry would give the rotation a decidedly less Old Testament look to it.  Cain backed up by Noah...now if they could only get Micah Bowie and perhaps Johnny Methuselah under contract, they'd have a real fire and brimstone rotation.

My real name is Moses. While I've never played an inning of baseball in my life, I'm pretty good at MVP Baseball 2005. I'm confident those skills will translate to success at the big league level.

And no, I can't play first base.

Looks like I picked the wrong year to stop sniffing glue.

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
Marlins as the centerpiece in a trade for Cabrera.  Honestly, I think that any team who has something to give and wants young, cheap potential would be foolish not to jump at Lowry.  He is a little bit more than potential at this point and is a fierce competitor out there.  I also want to see him in a Giants uniform for a long time, but the lesser of several evils seems to be Lowry so in the proper scenario I wouldn't be against it.  Grant makes a great point with that Eaton trade.  We all saw first hand what Gonzalez is capable of and Young is a stud.  I wouldn't be surprised if Sabean is listening to interested parties, and as a matter of a fact Lowry may very well be what the Giants are dangling to Boston as part of any deal that would bring Manny here.

Speaking of Manny, there is wide speculation that Giants would have to include a third team in order to land Manny.  One of the positions that Bos is trying to fill is SS.  If Baltimore is still interested in trading Tejada, maybe he goes to Bos and the Giants send pitching etc to Baltimore.

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
This is a tough question.

On one hand, he is going into his age-26 season and is a career 106 ERA+ starter.

On the other hand, he only has one year as a full-time, 200 IP starter, and last year his K rate was alarmingly lower than the year before.  Plus, he doesn't have the power-pitching profile that scouts and GMs drool over.

My guess is this:  think of a guy teams would pay $10-11 million a year at this point, or a guy better than that with a contract that a team wants to get out of.  That may be what you get.  You probably aren't going to get a slugging corner guy.

You might, though, get Burrell for Lowry, Benitez, and a middling prospect (which is almost all of ours, right?).  Maybe.

Oh - but you could get an unproven prospect corner guy like Adrian Gonzalez for sure.  Just no uber-prospects.

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
I was advocating trading Lowry last off-season and early this season.  But now, it would be selling low. The potential of his being a cheap #3 pitcher has more value to the Giants than what they would now garner in a trade for him.

Pitching Pitching Pitching
SF currently has:
    1. Morris
    2. Cain
    3. Lowry
    4. x
    5. y

x and y could come from the pool of:
 Sanchez
 Hennessey
 Correia
 FA signing
 Lincecum

At present time SF does not have the luxury of trading a pitcher without receiving a pitcher back in a trade.

I agree.  And now that Eaton has signed for 3/24, everyone decent will be $10 per.  At those prices, you might as well just sign Schmidt again.

Re: at least offer arbitration to Schmidt
The Giants definitely need another starting pitcher. Like their other offseaon moves, this acquisition needs to be as pain free to their future as possible.

I could tolerate a 2 year $20 million deal for Maddux (however, I would prefer not).  Maybe  Jeff Weaver for 2 year $15-16 million.

Re: at least offer arbitration to Schmidt
JEff Weaver?!!?!?!?!  NOooooooooooooo!

He is absolutely terrible.  With the Angels last year, he was off the charts bad.  With the Cardinals, he was merely awful.  He is bad and getting worse.  Don't let the playoffs fool you.

This applies to Suppan too, although he isn't nearly as crap as Weaver.  The Cardinals have excellent defense, especially in the IF.  It definitely masks a lot of pitcher flaws.  If I remember correctly, they allow a significantly lower BABIP than most teams because of their defense.  That probably won't happen with the Giants.

Oh, and this applies to the A's too, so be wary of Zito too.

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
I am an a man as well.  I am not in favor of trading him just because I selfishly enjoy watching Lowry pitch, and I think around baseball he is undervalued  because he doesn't throw 95 mph, so I think he might not bring as much back as he is worth to us.  That contract is looking good to me into the future.

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
I see Noah Lowry as part of the solution,
not part of the problem.

Plus, he wears his cap really low.
Got to give style points.

When you play in the ballpark the Giants call home,
it only makes sense to focus on pitching.

Lowry makes all but a handful of MLB starting rotations.
Noah is born and bred Giants, and part of talented core
of young pitching. Yes, Lowry is still young and maturing.

Sabes will go nuts with the pitching signings post-Dec.
He is all about the B-tier talent- a strategy that I am
not mocking in this bizzaro free agent climate.

The Giants should keep all pitching talent, and go shopping
on the free agent market for:

  • One top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher (Schimdt, Zito)
  • One middle-rotation starting pitcher (Meche, Lilly, Maddux)
  • One veteran bullpen arm (Weathers?)
  • One LOOGY for the pen (Kline?)
Humm Baby!

I'm thinking if we put together a package of Lowry, Hennesy, and Benitez, we could probably pry Pujols away from the Cards.  They'd be crazy to deny it - I mean, they're getting three players for the price of ONE!

In an EA Sports video game, You could probably throw in a 2nd round pick along with those three players, and get Pujols, and a 1st round pick back from St. Louis.  It's so ridiculously easy to rip people off in trades in video games...

You're absolutely right. Lowry is the new Snow.

Reading this post, though, I started to flash back to this logic class I took two and a half years ago. I saw something like this.

Barry Bonds puts butts in the seats
Therefore
Noah Lowry puts chicks in the seats

Can anybody fill in the blank(s) that makes this work?

Re: Open Noah Thread - WWNLB?
In our "collection" of up-and-coming arms we have zilch as to what they will/can do once in MLB.

In Lowry we have his MLB record-the drop in Ks is mildly troubling but he had some extenuating circumstances during the season. I see better K:W ratio coming back with resultant more attractive ERA.

Trading him before we absolutely know what the untested guys have would not be judicious.(syn.prudent,sage,sane,sensible,wise)

And, too, one cannot have too much LHP.

No to trade.
