Players ranked below Neifi Perez (#33) in 1997:

Bobby Abreu
Eric Chavez
Shannon Stewart
Mark Kotsay
Carlos Beltran
Torii Hunter

Not to pick on Baseball America with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight -- that would be ridiculously unfair -- but you can't help but giggle.

Fun reading for a true sadist
I must admit that I too had scanned the past Giants prospects, and I am happy to report that I only threw up in my mouth 26 times

I find it amusing that the only good hitter the Giants have produced in that period didn't even make the list.

No no - he had no upside. BA's prospect list is entirely an upside list - or for the most part anyway.

On the bright side, Sabean's got a record with trading away pitching prospects that betters Schuerolz - if it wasnt for that goddamn AJ F*!%!%% P%!)!%)%! deal...

Neifi
I'd like to see the alternate universe where Neifi Perez turned into an elite second baseman.

In that same year:

Trot Nixon
Derek Jeter
Charles Johnson (he may be backstop filler now, but he was once a good-hitting catcher)
Johnny Damon
Billy Wagner

So cheer up, Giants fans.  BA doesn't have a line on the Oracle at Delphi, either.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

True prospects
Before 2005, it looks like you should not pay attention to any Giants prospect unless he ranked in the top 20.  That bodes well for Matt Cain.
